This is but one part of American music history. To those of other countries, please remember America is made of different races, and each one has it's own musical history. Native American's are of course the Original Americans, and they have their music and oral history that is often forgotten and neglected by the white man..but it is still there. So to the Latin & Spanish races, the Negro race, and the French & Irish. This is what makes the USA so musically rich..it's eclectic racial tapestry.
True American music in being imported during the 1700's from the Scottish Highlands and Celtic regions and made our own when mixed with southern blues, jazz, on into rock and roll, etc. It is so wonderful, the magic of music and creativity with free expression by talented artists who pass the light to others.
People need these old ballads but they don't know it till they hear 'em. Then they want to sing 'em. I know I do. You never really forget a great ballad singer or their song. But if they ever get popular that will be the end of 'em 'cause some madison avenue type will inject them will commercial poison. Let's just enjoy what we've got and be thankful!
God bless the people who keep our heritage alive. The singers and those who record them, I hope there's someone out there walking in Mr. Lomax's footsteps today, though I fear there isn't.
I love this recording...I was born in 1982, it's one of my favorite ballads that i've learned over the years as Sheila's son, and one that I always try to perform when given the opportunity on stage with my mom. One minor correction, however, Adams is in fact Sheila's maiden name. Regardless, thanks so much for posting this beautiful glimpse into the past. Best regards ~
"Little Margaret" is Child ballad 74, Sharp number 17. Search Wikipedia for "Wallin Family" to get more information on the singers of Madison County, NC.

@NinkasiDelight I agree. Almost made me cry. Why are the children's songs always awfully sad?
CaptainSpellingError 3 months ago
@CaptainSpellingError These songs are often sad, because of the harsh lives the people who wrote them lived.
