I did this and the sound was coming out of one ear very badly so i unpluged the tv red and white cables from the tv so the adapters are still in now it works very well

usb can be plugged into back of hdtv as well

You will have to use the adapter if you use a receiver for input. My xbox connects to my receiver, not my tv. This method will only work if your xbox is connected directly to your tv. Good information for those that are connected to the tv though.
