He said he cried when he first saw the camp and what went on there. Eventually it became normal, for him and even for the worker Jews, it was every day normalcy. Anyone who can not believe this, has never been in a prison themselves. I myself was shipped crammed in a school bus in the dead of night, its how they move prisoners in the US, so packed in like sardines in leg and hand irons, you can not move. In a normal school bus you have room for your legs. In a US prison bus, the space has been shortened to only a few inches. I'm a small person, I couldn't move an inch and was in pain. But what needs to be remembered is that the SS who actually ran the camps were rarely of higher rank. Goeth (portrayed in Schindler's List) and Josef Mengale both held the rank equivalent of captain, and Adolf Eichmann himself was merely a Lt. Colonel- the highest rank someone who came up through the ranks from enlisted could achieve.

It's a figurative statement, not a literal one. If you don't see the lesson that must be learned from allowing a few extremists get into power and wipe out an entire race in an otherwise civilized society, the statement was meant for you. It's simply another way of saying "Those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it".

@HistorySpeaks4Itself I stand by what I said, and honestly we are arguing the same point. It's so surreal to think about Auschwitz and Treblinka existing as factories of mass extermination of the same race. It's almost denies belief something like that could happen, but the fact is that it did happen, and even today could happen again. I've seen former nazi's talk even today and still express their hatred of the Jewish people, it's disgusting, that anyone could agree with the final solution..
