My ship, the USS Canopus AS-34, sat in the Holy Loch in 1972, when I was in the Navy. This is interesting to see the Loch and Dunoon without American ships sitting there. I know the Scottish girls miss us American sailors. With the exception of my drunken, Scottish, ex-wife, Scotland was a wonderful experience for me, when I was a young sailor, just out of highschool.
@Zodslayer good to hear from you, thanks for the comment! I guess I've missed out in my life because I've never met an American sailor! lol Pity about your bad memories but glad you have some good ones!!
@Janeinwales Oh yea, there were far more good experiences than bad, by far. I lived in Glasgow most of the time. Back then, in the 70s, it was the "disco era," (LOL) One night stands...a different sailor with a different girl every night. This was all before we were aware of Aids. Aids put an abrupt end to that level of indiscretion. None-the-less, I have some wonderful memories of my Navy days in Scotland. I have two adult children there now, from my divorce from my ex-wife.
@Zodslayer I got off the Canopus in 1971. I rode her from Bremeton to Scotland to take over from Simon Lake. I'd love to know who your "drunken Scottish, ex-wife" was. I knew a few girls over there that would fit the bill. There's still a few shipmates who email each other. If you drop me an email off Youtube I can give you the name of a guy I work with who was on her about the same time you were.
@Canopus68 Someone I know who rode the Canopus or rode my wife? LOL! Probably both, knowing my ex-wife. Thanks, but I'm too old now for re-connecting with those old friends and I'm getting ready to leave America again, but for good this time. I don't know what it is and I'm not nocking America with this comment, but I always feel more excited and alive in foreign Countries. I'm always depressed in America. It makes me sad to say that, but I'm being honest.
I was in Dunoon while my husband was stationed on the USS Simon Lake AS-33, I often wondered how the loch would look without it an the Los Alamos in it and it is beautiful. I lived in the Village of Sandbank for a while, then moved to Eagle Court. Scotland is a beautiful country and the people (most of them) were great.
