Love the way you guys have fun. I'm a reenactor and a larper, and what you guys do does look like a larp or very similar to something like larp or the SCA but focusing on the combat. But I wont argue the point, thanks for keeping an open mind to larp and wish you all the best in your 'martial pursuits" (if thats an accurate coining :D )
Eh? I really am not a hater but...you "make stories" and have combat? and your not larp? get over yourself guys - I love the idea of learning any active skill, but your we are not larp is pretty pathetic.
For having such a condescending tone in your video, you seem rather polite here on the comments to your video. Not sure what that's about, but... okay.
this is true sir. People are going to hate...no matter what I do. Some people hate by choice..some hate because its all they know. I feel bad for them either way. This changes nothing. We are what we are..and what we are not...we are not.
Im not going to just start bashing this or anything but seriously what is the appeal in this i can understand RP i suppose but the action of this kind of thing how ever you want to describe it whats the deal with it? i never understood it....like an ejoyment of Renaissance or medieval???i just dont quite get it lol
@DXDanselasDX Some people find joy in dance. Their movements get lost in the rythem and they truly let go. Moments of true-self being in the flow. Some find this with art of all kinds, but some find it in jogging..or practiceing martial arts. The tool is nothing more than a tool. Since many of us have backgrounds with ren-fair or SCA or the like..we chose this mode..this form, The code is based off my thought that if you are to teach this..you should also try to not make monsters.
Well thank you for explaining it to me because honestly ive played alot of mmo's and things related to Renaissance fair like topics so i can see where your coming from with this hope you guys keep having fun and as few injuries as possible ty for the explation and have a great day good sir
Hey Will since you study sword mastery check out Master Leichtennaur's German longswording techniques (search M.E.M.A.G. in YouTube browser). I use the techniques in S.C.A. fighting.
: ) Thanks forthe invite! Where is your located? If it is near we will do what we can to make it...if you are not local we will have to check out another. If this is a friendly challange. If I have offended you in some way then my deepest apologies
Although I have never LARPed, just boffer fight. I think LARP might be fun to try. I just need to find a place in my area that isn't uberly strict or one that doesn't have dumb rules.
Oh wait I pretty much ruled out every LARP group.... No offense to LARPers but seriously your rule books are like 50 pages long and Will Gray needs like 30 seconds to explain his rules...
I'd say that is a bit of a generalization. Yes, LARPing is generally more complicated than what Wilgrey does, but that doesn't necessarily translate into "insanely complicated and difficult to learn." The latest LARP I wrote was about 31 pages total, but that was including 1 title page, 6 pages of weapons/items, the character sheet, 3 for the backstory, and 1 for the actual races, leaving 11 pages to actual mechanics/rules.
At around 0:25 white tshirt and shorts switches from right to 2 handed to left and back again- I think it looks cool but I wouldn't call it a martial art, it is quite flashy and I'm sure it's not the most effective methods. That's not ahving a go and I'm not claiming to know how to swordfight but whenever I play around with a stick I wouldn't bother with the twirling and switching of hands, keep it in my right and get it moving as fast as possible.
Want to learn how to '"fight" with boffer weapons...
Check out SKBC. Sword Knight Boot Camp. Its a class that's run yearly by a group called Amtgard (a boffer LARP) and...well...needless to say, it makes these kids look foolish. Learn body mechanics, offhand fighting, pole and short blade fighting... Just search for SKBC here on youtube, or google.
Thankyou for your comentary. I will leave you ad up. What we do is not for all, as is the truth for anything. I understand that you need to make yours sound good and well, and it didn't bother me that the things you offer iI teach aswell. It saddened me that you had to resort to calling us names such as kids, since I am 12 yrs your senior. And in my 15 yrs of doing this I have learned a lot. Thinking I am foolish shows only that you know the fool I show, and have not watched enough to know me.
I was hopeing to see some of this skill and talent that is far suprior to mine. And was saddened that you had nothing to back your words. I would honestly love to see your ability. If you have any videos please post them. If you are as good as you say I would like nothing better than to have a chance to learn from someone.
you are correct...in a way. Where they are not seel, the lessons that can be learned are real. When the FBI trains their field agents when they first start, when learning to handle a "purp" they are issued rubber guns so they don't accidently shoot their fellow agents. This is no diffrent, and yet the skills they learn in both cases are real. But I thankyou for your input.
Thanks for the video. Its good that you clarified what the Knights are and Im glad you have such a 'silly' and 'cute' bunch lol. It seems nice. I think there was good respect for LARP too, so well done.
Also a side note: I really like to see new members and I like to see old members improving even more. I think the new (though she may not be new anymore, it is Feb. 09) shows (showed) a lot of promise!!
I respect your point of view, and from your eyes I can understand. I split the diffrence based on the idea that The storyline that we do is acting in metaphore, where LARPing is more of being a characture for sport. We do not use the name Merrick and Nightbringer when fighting. They are only charctures in a story, in that respect you could say that all actors are Role Playing in Live Action. The other names such as Sir Will of Gray is a title earned through the school, and not part of any game
Actually both Amtgard and Dagorhir do and then some. Both groups are considered LARPs but the focus in both groups is in large scale free form combat with a sprinkle of roleplaying. Combat in both groups follows much of what Will Grey teaches including much of his rules. One on one combat in both groups though is very minor except when sparing. As I said, the focus of both is in large team boffer combat, which actually adds a formation and team play element to the boffer combat.
This is a fat guy pretending that he knows anything about survival and violence. Lesson One: Fit people are harder to kill.

You should join a dag group. That's less LARPing than you are doing, people don't act out as characters, and its all combat oriented.

I have a challenge for you and your "Knights of Grey".
Check out Amtgard... Technically a LARP, but actually more of a Boffer Sport!!
I have watched quite a few of your videos and feel that you would have your eyes opened in a large fashion by our organization...
Our organization, Amtgard, has honed boffer combat into highly effective Martial Art form, if you will...
You made the comment that your "Knights of Grey" would come to visit other games...
Find an Amtgard field near you and go visit!!!

I am not a Knight of Gray merely a fan of their videos. I belong to a currently unnamed boffer fighting group.

To be fair, I HAVE played in LARPs where the rulebooks were 100-200 pages long, but the notion against generalizations still holds true,IMO.

Why would you switch your attacking arm???
Davnios 2 years ago
you mean in the sparring? It was probably because a hit was made and so he or I had to switch. If this is not what you mean let me know.

They're not a Larp group. Big difference between a swordfighting school and Larping. :P
Elya08 3 years ago
you're totally larping.
therealmag 3 years ago
You have characters, and aren't being 'yourself'. You don't really 'die' when you die. There's a fictional story the characters exist in.
That's RP. Even if you don't take it as seriously as some other LARPs.
You actually fight and act out things, you don't role dice for it. That's LA.
Sorry guys, you're a LARP. Maybe one of the better ones. But still a LARP.
It's ok. Really.

Not the point of Will's video, but rather to differentiate what he does from LARPing.
LARPing can be fun, and isn't something you should "stay away from"
