This is a great cut. He's a phenomenal musician, and a great entertainer. A lot of people get caught up in his celebrity and feel that it gives them the right to take cheap shots at his artistic ability; but hey, everyone's entitled to their own opinion. @bubbabubbabooba that song is based on a 1minor - 3 major -4major progression in E minor. he adds the 7 and 9th to the 1 chord. used by plenty of musicians before hendrix in classical and popular music, and jazz. I didn't say I could find the source of every single chord or riff hendrix ever learned. but you can't do that for mayer either. where did he steal the neon fingerpicking technique from? where did he steal the complex voicings for neon from?

@bubbabubbabooba hendrix uses a basic 4/4 time signature which he surely did not invent. my point is not to say that hendrix and mayer are unoriginal, but they both are very original. creativity is not creating something new, its simply reconfiguring patterns that already exist in nature. scientific studies show its impossible to imagine something in your mind that you have notalready experienced in the past. any music hendrix or mayer creates are simplya reconfiguration of past musical memories

The immpression I get from what I 've heard here on youtube, is his vocal style is very much like Dave Mathews, especially that 1983 tune. And when he plays SRV covers, he sounds exactly like SRV, singing and guitar tone. And when he covered California Dreaming, he's clearly stealing Hendrix's All along the Watchtower which is a similar chord progression.
