ok i am a total noob but the repositionable spray adhesive is that to make the stencil stick to the wall? or any other area your spraying the picture too?
Yeah, it's to make the stencil stay adhered to whatever surface you're spraying it on, be it canvas, smooth wall (forget using it on pebbledash or brick), glass, plastic or metal.
Is it advisable to use spray adhesive to apply this sort of thing to a wall. Please dont respond with "it's not advisable to spray on a wall" i know that
It depends on the surface. There's no point using spray adhesive with brick/pebbledash walls or on rough wood but it works a treat for metal, plastic, glass and polished stone.
It's great for windy conditions (although you can frame a stencil with cardboard to stop it flapping around or tape coins to the bottom corners) and will cut down on the underspray.
However it can be a bitch to quickly store in your bag afterwards if you don't have a system or nerves to take your time :)
thanks man, and i was looking at this piece on the cutnspray . COM home page that had a monkey that looked like some of the white area was closed off. What I mean was that i do not know how the artist held the acetate over because there was nothing for it to be attached to. any thoughts?
You're referring to an island. When you attach an island to the rest of the stencil, you call that attaching bit a bridge. They probably had a second stencil to spray the details, like the 'armor bolts', if that's what you're referring to.
depends how handy you are with the knife. i usually make mine out of card and an a2 stencil took me bout 45mins but an a4 will take less time. plus i think im quite slow :P
If you want to seriously cut down your underspray, yes. However with streetwork, it's usually pointless; surfaces you're spraying on will either be dirty and/or won't let the stencil stick. It's best to design stencils for streetwork with a margin of underspray and detail loss taken into account. Hope that helps.

this is the perfect "how to be a stencil toy of the week by learning nothing and hardly doing anything". Sorry anybody who doesnt have a computer, only rich suburban kids need apply only. Using stolen software and stealing some trite image off google- you too can be a terrible unoriginal stencil toy. Where is the style in using photoshop to create your stencil for you? I remember when people had to think and have some bit of skill, style or even some wit when they did graffiti
There's no need to be elitist about it, the whole charm of graffiti/street art is that there aren't any censors and anyone can do it. The methods explained here are perfectly possible with a free graphics program like GIMP. Doing straight up 'photo to stencil' aren't my thing but it may be just the thing other people want to know.
Hey, great video, really helped me out! However, I have printed onto accetate but the ink just doesnt dry, any help on how I can get it to dry quickly? Cheers
You should make sure the acetate you're using is fit to use on your printer. If it's inkjet, buy inkjet acetate. If it's laser, get laserjet acetate. It sounds like you're using laserjet acetate with inkjet or acetate for writing on/photocopying...
Strange. Well a solution would be to print onto paper, temporarily stick that to the actetate underneath and cut it that way. Alternatively, you can scratch the surface of the acetate with sandpaper and it'll hold the print better; works for me if I have to but do it at your own risk...
hey thanks dud this really helped. i use paint and word haha i need to try acetate paper, the spray adhesive just tears regular paper. you should make a tut on layered stenciling. haha
Not really, all paint will build up on the stencil, however you can place the stencil in the freezer for a day, take it out and flakethe paint off if there's a fair few layers.
what ever happened to just drawing on a piece of card and cutting that?, or am i just being a dinosaur thats about to be buried in a techological tar pit?
oh its just that they have like a billion of tohse at me school and they use em alot for presenting stuff and other things. dude this vid is tight u should make alot more. whats the song and what video program did u use? the black and whiteage looks tight
Apart from the actual video parts which are movie clips, I made the text and images in a graphics program and then imported them into Windows Movie Maker.
Firstlu, why ask yourself if it's 'art or 'not art'. Judge stuff on it's individual merit, rather than labelling stuff and ignoring it.
But if we're to discuss it, this teaches the basics of a technique that you can get fine detail with, line many up for awesome colourful pieces and they're relatively fast to deploy up on the street.
i'd have to agree with pope's response to this...but add something of my own...this is a one layer stencil...there's people who are making stencils that are easily a dozen layers...and they're ten by ten feet in size...not really child's play in my mind
Latex gloves are especially awesome. If paint gets on them, a quick rub of the hands will dry it out and you can continue without fear of making blotches of paint on your work.
But yeah, if you're producing big big big stencils (A1 or bigger), you're better off printing on paper and fixing it to cardboard. If you have a local recycle facility, try grabbing some cardboard. We have an area with different skips for different materials.

i really liked the instruction but i think it would benefit you more to use an xacto knife instead of a utility knife since you can get the details alot closer.
yea i liked the stencil but the only thing about that is its a little to easy.. i use acrylic paper and draw my own immages. acrylic paper comes bigger than A4 so you can make your stencils bigger!!+ you can multi layer with acrylic paper easier! and not everyone can do it ;)
Lining up multiple layered stencils with acetate, as it is clear, is rather easy. The problem I find with hand drawn stencils is they're not nearly as detailed as photo manipulated designs.
You can also tape multiple printed out sheets together ;)
that was a really good video. actually, thats one fo the best vidoes ive seen in a while that explines ANYTHING. especially stenciling. KWG should be proud.
Are there any free graphics programs which will do this???? i can only find really expensive ones!? I print out my stencils on plain paper and then laminate them it works really well and they last forever! Nice video!!
i havent used the acetate paper, i usually just print out on normal paper, then put it on a cerial box (so it doesnt get all soggy) and cut.. works perfect, but why use adhesive? i mean if ur gunna use stencils w/ spray paint, like i have ur prolly gunna be stencilling it onto buildings and signs, anyway, nice video.

You cannot change the brightness/contrast or hue/saturation in MS Paint. Try downloading GIMP, it's free, and a whole lot better than Paint.
