  • ok i am a total noob but the repositionable spray adhesive is that to make the stencil stick to the wall? or any other area your spraying the picture too?

  • Yeah, it's to make the stencil stay adhered to whatever surface you're spraying it on, be it canvas, smooth wall (forget using it on pebbledash or brick), glass, plastic or metal.

  • great video. you have helped me out a bunch. once again...great video.

  • execellent! and i dig this CRASS font !

  • dis is well gd it will improove my taggin skillz fo real

thanks alot m8, ur well gr8 at grafittee

  • Lol so here's my image (music stops) its a dog

I thought it would ba a machinegun or a gasmask wow

  • There are already too amny stencils of those things :P

  • great stuff thanks m8

  • It's really usefull. Thanks man!

  • nice.!

  • Is it advisable to use spray adhesive to apply this sort of thing to a wall. Please dont respond with "it's not advisable to spray on a wall" i know that

  • It depends on the surface. There's no point using spray adhesive with brick/pebbledash walls or on rough wood but it works a treat for metal, plastic, glass and polished stone.

It's great for windy conditions (although you can frame a stencil with cardboard to stop it flapping around or tape coins to the bottom corners) and will cut down on the underspray.

However it can be a bitch to quickly store in your bag afterwards if you don't have a system or nerves to take your time :)

    Happy spraying

  • thanks man, and i was looking at this piece on the cutnspray . COM home page that had a monkey that looked like some of the white area was closed off. What I mean was that i do not know how the artist held the acetate over because there was nothing for it to be attached to. any thoughts?

  • You're referring to an island. When you attach an island to the rest of the stencil, you call that attaching bit a bridge. They probably had a second stencil to spray the details, like the 'armor bolts', if that's what you're referring to.

  • yeah thanks man, thats what I meant. Do you have any other tips for an aspiring stencil artist?

  • Other than get painting, not really :D

  • Great vid

  • lol A DOG!!!

about how long does it take to cut out stencils like this??

  • depends how handy you are with the knife. i usually make mine out of card and an a2 stencil took me bout 45mins but an a4 will take less time. plus i think im quite slow :P

  • This is a very very nicely done video. GREAT WORK dude.

  • Comment removed

  • very nice vid. thank you.

  • dude clash is the shit i love high press

    cans

  • awesome:)thanx

  • thanks for posting the video! i'll try it out! :)

  • hello wat up i want to make a layered stencil i have gimp can anyone give me step by step thankz

  • im using ms paint and how do i get to the hue/saturaiton window and how do i get to the brightness thing

  • You cannot change the brightness/contrast or hue/saturation in MS Paint. Try downloading GIMP, it's free, and a whole lot better than Paint.

  • thanks lots man ill try it.

p.s Dude i really admire your work its really cool

  • I completely agree.

GIMP is a really good probramme for stenciling on

  • 2:31.

  • It's taken over a year for someone to spot that.

    You win, amigo. You win.

  • what about 2:31?

  • jus pay attention to the last few miliseconds at 2:31 an ul see:-)

  • Great Video! But what exactly is the spray adhesive for? Do you really need it?

  • If you want to seriously cut down your underspray, yes. However with streetwork, it's usually pointless; surfaces you're spraying on will either be dirty and/or won't let the stencil stick. It's best to design stencils for streetwork with a margin of underspray and detail loss taken into account. Hope that helps.

  • Very nice stencil guide, but especially a great editing of the video. pretty funny too. greetings 5*

  • Thanks ;)

  • yo what program is GIMP

  • There's no need to be elitist about it, the whole charm of graffiti/street art is that there aren't any censors and anyone can do it. The methods explained here are perfectly possible with a free graphics program like GIMP. Doing straight up 'photo to stencil' aren't my thing but it may be just the thing other people want to know.

  • Hey, great video, really helped me out! However, I have printed onto accetate but the ink just doesnt dry, any help on how I can get it to dry quickly? Cheers

  • You should make sure the acetate you're using is fit to use on your printer. If it's inkjet, buy inkjet acetate. If it's laser, get laserjet acetate. It sounds like you're using laserjet acetate with inkjet or acetate for writing on/photocopying...

  • Well thats what I thought but I have just checked and I have inkjet acetate and my printer is inkjet!?

  • Strange. Well a solution would be to print onto paper, temporarily stick that to the actetate underneath and cut it that way. Alternatively, you can scratch the surface of the acetate with sandpaper and it'll hold the print better; works for me if I have to but do it at your own risk...

  • Ok Kool. Well, thanx for the help!

  • hey thanks dud this really helped. i use paint and word haha i need to try acetate paper, the spray adhesive just tears regular paper. you should make a tut on layered stenciling. haha

  • Is there a paint you can recommend that wont gradually clog up the stencil?

  • Not really, all paint will build up on the stencil, however you can place the stencil in the freezer for a day, take it out and flakethe paint off if there's a fair few layers.

  • nice tip i'll go and try it!

  • nice vid bro. very informative

btw, can u really print on acetate?

or do you print on paper THEN stick it on acetate?

thx for the inspiring vid man

  • As long as you order the right stuff, you can printly *directly* onto acetate. It'll usually say 'Inkjet' or 'Laser' somewhere. Cheers.

  • thanks alot it helps me alot :)

  • You're welcome amigo.

  • what ever happened to just drawing on a piece of card and cutting that?, or am i just being a dinosaur thats about to be buried in a techological tar pit?

  • Well for those that can't draw realisticly, people can use photos and edit them digitally into stencils.

  • cheers that helped loads! Thanks

  • Music Is:

    Michael Jackson - Fatboy Slim

    =D

    goood tuto, thanks

  • Actually it's only the end that has the song mixed in with Michael Jackson - Fatboy Slim but the majority is The World's Made Up Of This And That :P

  • pope you rock man! whats acetate though? i make stencils alot but i just use paper and it messes the edges up and stuff

  • It's the plastic sheets used on OHPs (overhead projectors). Tough, waterproof and sturdy enough for thin bridges :D

  • ooooohhh. ok. thanks. aww too bad schools already out cause now i have to buy those :\ :D

  • Haha, tell me about it man...

  • oh its just that they have like a billion of tohse at me school and they use em alot for presenting stuff and other things. dude this vid is tight u should make alot more. whats the song and what video program did u use? the black and whiteage looks tight

  • Apart from the actual video parts which are movie clips, I made the text and images in a graphics program and then imported them into Windows Movie Maker.

The song is listed at the end :P

  • do you actually do grafitti?

  • Indeed I do :)

  • got any pics or videos of it? u could probably make some really tight billion layer stecnils

  • FBS roxx & u2 ;)

  • im also in the kwg crew

  • what is the art in this? the only hard thing is the cutting, a 4 year old could do this....no offense man

  • Firstlu, why ask yourself if it's 'art or 'not art'. Judge stuff on it's individual merit, rather than labelling stuff and ignoring it.

But if we're to discuss it, this teaches the basics of a technique that you can get fine detail with, line many up for awesome colourful pieces and they're relatively fast to deploy up on the street.

No need to be so ignorant.

  • i'd have to agree with pope's response to this...but add something of my own...this is a one layer stencil...there's people who are making stencils that are easily a dozen layers...and they're ten by ten feet in size...not really child's play in my mind

  • thanx for that, i neva thought of usin acetate or temp adhesive, i just used normal card and i held the stencil against the wall with my hands!

NO more black fingernails for me!

  • Latex gloves are especially awesome. If paint gets on them, a quick rub of the hands will dry it out and you can continue without fear of making blotches of paint on your work.

But yeah, if you're producing big big big stencils (A1 or bigger), you're better off printing on paper and fixing it to cardboard. If you have a local recycle facility, try grabbing some cardboard. We have an area with different skips for different materials.

  • That was 3:56 well spent - excellent! Educational, entertaining, cussing, and puppies - what more could you ask for?

DESDE CHILE, hi all!

Gracias.

  • useful shit, thanks

  • Your welcome, amigo.

  • Great vid

  • i really liked the instruction but i think it would benefit you more to use an xacto knife instead of a utility knife since you can get the details alot closer.

  • this is inspiring gotta try it out someday.lol.

  • Definately amigo, it's such a good feeling when it all comes together.

  • hey man great vid it really helped out! cool brother

  • That's what I made it for :D

  • yea i liked the stencil but the only thing about that is its a little to easy.. i use acrylic paper and draw my own immages. acrylic paper comes bigger than A4 so you can make your stencils bigger!!+ you can multi layer with acrylic paper easier! and not everyone can do it ;)

  • Lining up multiple layered stencils with acetate, as it is clear, is rather easy. The problem I find with hand drawn stencils is they're not nearly as detailed as photo manipulated designs.

You can also tape multiple printed out sheets together ;)

  • you obviously havent seen my stencils then :)

  • Sorry, what?

  • any other stencil teaching vids? or anything else like that. . .

  • that was great!!! i loved it, anythin else like that u got??

  • In terms of teaching stencil art or just stencil art in general?

    Glad you liked it :)

  • liked the humor. nice tut

  • VELLUM!

  • gnarly, I stencil quite a bit - Need to try acetate, seems lining up layers would be a lot easier!

This vid was cool as man.

  • all right! well thanks for replying.

  • Hey, that was cool, but is there any problem with just using a big ol piece of cardboard and drawing your picture/design and cutting it out?

  • Not at all, this is just how I go about producing stencils. In fact if I want an especially long lasting stencil, I'll produce a cardboard copy.

  • Sweet. Thanks.

  • nice one banksy jnr.

    sametwo loik wha

  • Hah, I'll take the "banksy jnr" as a compliment :D

  • Great stuff The-Pope, Welcome to SK8UK by the way.

  • Aye, I'd be redundant back then ><

  • Nice little KWG plug at the end. ;)

  • Haha aye, got to give props to the communities that have taught me ;)

  • nice job, really good guide.

  • that was a really good video. actually, thats one fo the best vidoes ive seen in a while that explines ANYTHING. especially stenciling. KWG should be proud.

  • Hah, glad it was handy, And yes, KWG love me :P

  • oh. okays, thanks yeah! :D

  • Are there any free graphics programs which will do this???? i can only find really expensive ones!? I print out my stencils on plain paper and then laminate them it works really well and they last forever! Nice video!!

  • anw, what's acetate paper?

  • It's what you'd use to print something on if you wanted to display it on a projector. They're sometimes called OHP paper. Glad it helped.

  • that did help in my stenciling! THANKS YEAH! great video!

    :D

  • i havent used the acetate paper, i usually just print out on normal paper, then put it on a cerial box (so it doesnt get all soggy) and cut.. works perfect, but why use adhesive? i mean if ur gunna use stencils w/ spray paint, like i have ur prolly gunna be stencilling it onto buildings and signs, anyway, nice video.

  • The point of spray adhesive is to dramatically reduce underspray, to get a nice clean edge. If you do use spray adhesive, acetate is better because it won't tear as easily as paper. Then again, if you're going street, corrugated cardboard is the best for quick jobs but that stuff takes ages to cut.

Also, if you have a stencil across many sheets of paper, you can stick them all up with the adhesive and then spray it in one go. It's handy stuff.

  • Well adhesive spray reduces the underspray, for a cleaner line. Using acetate with adhesive is better compared to paper too, as it won't tear as easily.

Also, if you have a stencil across multiple sheets, you can stick them all up on the surface and spray the whole thing in one job. It makes street jobs easier and quicker and that can only be a good thing.

  • tru.dat

  • Damn Pope, that was "G" shit.

  • Thanks man ; )

  • Duude, so pro.

  • You know me, nothing but pro here :P

  • Yeah thats a cool video, ive never used that adhesive stuff, should look into it. Man your a fast cutter :P

  • Yeah, the adhesive spray is awesome, goodbye underspray!
