This is a military aircraft we're talking about that was involved in this tragedy, not a commercial plane. And the fact that it malfunctioned above a heavily populated city like San Diego, it just scares the living shit out of me. Where's the outrage folks? How come we're not having a press conference to address the fact that one of the most sophisticated fighter aircraft we have in the military arsenal isn't going to malfunction again -- and in the middle of cities and towns we live in??

I'm so saddened by people's ignorance. I live in San Diego and actually saw this accident as it happened. The engines lost power, the plane became uncontrollable. The pilot ejected at approximately 300 feet above the ground. How folks can actually blame a mechanical malfunction on the pilot is sickening. And to all the America haters out there. If we were so "imperialistic" your sorry ass country would've been wiped off the planet a hundred years ago.

this is a horrible accident, but unfortunately training accidents like this happen every year in the military. It's just odd that civilians were killed, pretty sure this pilot has lost his wings... he's going to be answering questions about this incident for years to come.

you mis-understand my meaning, anyone getting killed is horrible. but why the pilot couldn't guide this jet into a less populated area, or why he couldn't point this jet toward the sea before he ejected is odd to me. Military training accidents should never, ever involve civilian deaths. It is extremely odd to me that he chose to eject leaving his jet flying over residential areas

as of dec 10, seems both engines failed on the F18 so the pilot couldn't really do anything - as to say flying the jet over a less populated area. a tragic accident nonetheless.

I don't accept that, military planes crash every year always have, but rarely if ever on populated areas. C-130's are much bigger and they have a much worse flying record than any F18's and they rarely crash in populated areas, it would clear a whole city block.

Press he was on a single engine and already halfway inland so they higher ups made the call for him to head to miramar. For him to land and do work on the plane. As he went over the populated area he lost the other engine. There was nothing he could do to point the plane out to sea or a less populated area.

Training accidents happen daily in the military, that is an occupational hazard, how ever, civilian deaths during training are unacceptable. I'm sorry if that hurts someone's feelings, but civilians died.

His ass would be on the line even if he'd hit an empty mess hall, this is not a hockey game where you get a 5min major.
