My hearings so bad that i cant understand half of what their saying, but even with only half of the lyrics i know that the song has a meaning, that is why i love The Avett Brothers.
Amazing. I used to see these guys at the Double Door. Last time I saw them was at Radio City. Pretty cool. Nice job. Because we had to! Because we loved you!
I haven't seen them live in over a few years, but DAMN I sure do miss them in concert! Everytime I followed them around on tour and saw them, every single show was like a spiritual awakening... they are seriously talented and some of the nicest guys you will ever meet.
I like them better with at least a little bit of stubble hahaha
So wierd to see them clean shaven. Considering everytime I've seen them live they have had these awesome beards. except not as long as they were in the beginning(: hahah
To me this song is the epitome of the Avett Brother's style of music. It is impossible to sit still listening to this song. And how nice is it to actually hear voices that aren't edited by some robot! I think that is one of the great things about these guys...there songs/voices always sound like they are coming from down the hall, in the barn, in the studio, or at the bar across the street.
The imperfection is actually perfection when it comes to the Avett's singing style.
god damn, seriously, I don't think a better band exists... I'm not kidding... and this is coming from a musician who has prided myself in having very in-tune tastes with talent alone... these guys are the best songwriters who ever lived, bar none, there's no way to convince me otherwise.
bought 3 Avett brothers cd today on Amazon. Realized that although I LOVE this song, Four Thieves was not amongst the purchases. Oy. Back to amazon I go.
I absolutely adore this little tangent, this isn't on an album is it? I love how they reuse the bit at the start which was also in Will you come Again? when they were all in the motorhome.
I love how such a great and lovable band is so active in creating and sharing such enjoyable content, thanks ramseurr records, I'd like to come work for you.
i listen to them when i wake up, as a i'm falling asleep, in the car, during walks, while i'm on the computer. They are awsome. I always can find something new that i didn't notice before.
Occasionally I search out this specific video and savor it. No, the video quality isn't keen. But I love the redneck abandon of the old car tearing along, the flippant yet masculine departure along the dirt road, the collecting of shaving implements. It gets my panties wet.
Man, before I heard the Avetts four years ago I could have given a shit about folk music... but Ramsuer records sent the college radio station a copy of Four Thieves Gone; I played the first track off of it, lets just say the college has yet to play that same copy (because I took it home to add to my own collection). In 06 I drove 9 hours from Long Beach to San Francisco to see them live at a Folk Festival, I even got to meet them. They are an awesome bunch of guys.
i love how they have this folk/bluegrass vibe, and also a punk vibe. i saw them earlier this year, and they were effin amazing. they have such a good stage presence, and everyone just loves them, including mee :D bahah.
I have 4 thieves and emotionalism. Two very different albums. I like thieves better--so if I am looking for more of a rockin' album, which Avett Brothers album should be my next purchase?
I used to be into punk and metal. Then my teacher showed me these guys.

If you don't get excited at one of their shows you don't have a pulse. They write beautiful music and have so much energy. If I could see only one group this year, hands down, it would be the Avett Brothers. I have seen them perform five times now. They never disappoint!
The Avett Brothers are not only great musicians and song writers but most importantly they are really good people.
i don't understand why someone would take the time to post negative comments on a band like this. if you don't like it, then fuck off, take your bullshit elsewhere, i'll be in the front row.
and it might have been cool to rip on dave matthews 5 years ago, but now it just shows that you're a loser with nothing better to do.
anyone who says they're not good vocalists should listen to Emotionalism, they've matured so much musically since they started, their vocal harmonies are amazing now
You are commenting on what your definition of rock and roll is. I'm not saying they're setting the standard for future bands of America. I'm saying they rock..they play hard. They write catchy songs. They have good lyrics. They are passionate when they play.
Not really. For about the first 30 seconds of singing, it's essentially pure noise. I will admit that the melody could be catchy....but it's pretty grating. And they pretty much don't do anything else for the rest of the song but that, except for when they slow down and start playing something that could be pretty. But it's not pretty. Because they're not very good vocalists. They are energetic, though.
But pure rock and roll? No. Listen to some Chuck Berry. Or Led Zeppelin II. Or George Thorogood and the Destroyers. All purveyors of pure rock and roll.
just out of curiosity, have you listened to any of their other music? music is subjective and maybe you won't like the other stuff, but this isn't typical of them, even though I love this too. I'm just saying, give it a listen before you dismiss them out of hand. and if you don't like it, well, you don't.
They are far far far from DMB or some other trendy band. They radiate so much more energy and passion, they're like a runaway train...this video doesn't exhibit it as well as it could. Go see them live. You'll see. And if not, oh well...
Yes, they are far away from DMB. I only compared the two because the DMB sucks, which is essentially what I thought of this. Their music might be better live; I don't know.
1. I came with a critique of the act; you, with an insult. Look again, dude. I don't like ventriloquists; I'm a fan of Jeff Dunham. Given his popularity I'd say I'm not freaky, just jovial.
2. Another insult. I gave my obviously subjective judgment.
3. Who cares how old something is if it is awesome? Hendrix did mountains of drugs; does that mean he wasn't great?
4. So they're fresh and energetic. Doesn't mean I'd like to listen to them.
Open minds catch both cool and crap. Learn to discern.
My band opened for these guys last night at the soiled dove in denver and they were the greatest live band i have ever seen. totally blew me away. can't wait for the next show.
I was at that merlefest concert at the opening of this video, also they played at my high school the day before it, and i got to meet all three of them, and we thought they were gonna be just another boreing band from merlefest but blew everyone away when they opend with this song, i now have two of there cds, and i love em
I moved from the UK to NC and the best thing about the move was discovering The Avetts Brothers. They are the BEST band to see live with all their energy and just brilliant music. Also, they are REALLY nice, modest blokes in person. How very dare people criticise them!! I started spreading the word in the UK but back here now and can't wait to see them again. I heard they were on the Conan whatsit show the other night - anyone got it?
It's not like Scott doesn't pluck the banjo in some songs, he just doesn't pluck it all the time... sometimes, he just strums it.
But, more importantly, what kind of elitist douchebag ridicules someone for how they play a musical instrument? It's not about how it's done, it's about how it sounds.
This dumbass would have probably ridiculed Jimi Hendrix for playing his electric upside down and restrung for a lefty.
The Avett's are famous because they fucking rock.. I'm so glad lame-asses like you STAY HOME when Merlefest is going on. I hate when whinny ass-clowns like you are sitting beside my family and I enjoying great music.
You have no idea what you are talking about - Scott has a completely different banjo picking style than traditional Bluegrass. Try keeping your moronic comments from coming out of your mouth when you don't know what you are talking about... I rest my case...
My hearings so bad that i cant understand half of what their saying, but even with only half of the lyrics i know that the song has a meaning, that is why i love The Avett Brothers.

Why are these guys famous? They are one of the very reasons I don't go to Merlefest anymore. Put the banjo down or take some lessons OR grab a Strat.
