  • aww reading all this breaks my heart. I love him so, how could he have such a sad life!!!

  • Poor Al...he had spent his last evening of 16 April 1941 in action at High Wycombe, and after the show he returned to his flat in Jermyn St, London - the air raid sirems went off but he was too tired to go down to the shelter so he lay on his bed reading a cowboy comic as the air raid raged over London. A German land mine landed outside his flat and the explosion caused devastation and Al was killed by the blast instantly. There wasn't a single mark on his body! The end of a legend.

  • Al does look quite drawn and tired here but it's still one of my favourite pictures of him!

  • the 17th April 1941 is the sad day Al was killed and next week some 62 years ago and still a fantastic singer!

  • back in the 30's!.

  • Poor Al Bowlley. He does look ill doesn't he.If only he could have known that 70 or so years later there would still be devoted fans about, sharing his lovely work.

  • He'd be delighted!

  • I always find this period a little sad. There was a lot of vocal competition around and with the war just around the corner, the whole scene would change. This is such a nice song, good old Al.

  • Indeed, his tone is notably less stable, still this is a lovely song, largely worth being favourited. With all those gems I'll need a complete favourites database instead of a simple favourites page!
