Heard this first in 1975 on a John Denver Christmas special. Thanks to the digital age I was able to download it many years later. This song really touches me as I'm sure it does everyone who hears it. I miss those days when Merry Christmas was something everyone said and we had such wonderful artists like John Denver singing about it.
My daughter just shared this with me. I love John Denver, and grew up loving the "cowboy shows" on TV in the 50's and 60's. Why have I never heard this song? New favorite. :-)
@my2cents2u I first heard this song in the early 1980's on a John Denver Christmas cassette that we just opened while driving through the vast expanses of eastern New Mexico (where I live) to get to Houston Texas. It was pitch dark out and I could see Orion rising in the east just as he said "the stars overhead are Christmas tree lights". The image and feeling have never left me. I have never heard it on the radio. Hard to believe it is from about 1975. Thanks for the comment.
@my2cents2u There is one other strange twist to my story. We were between Vaughn and Roswell, NM, a nearly 100 mile stretch of nothing-no towns, gas stations, or places to eat. It wasn't until many years later that I learned he was born in Roswell. Unfortunately, Roswell is now known for its fake UFO landing, not as the birthplace of one of the greatest songwriters of the 20th century.
