  • My ears, they bleed. It was good but a tad bit loud!

  • You dit very well one of the best i've found on youtube :)

  • NICE RIFF almost just like the real thing :):)

  • no way!

  • you should do it with the neck pick up

  • to all who don't get this video -- he gives you a tab, hes not going to go walk you through it by your hand. he is showing you subtleties that arent in the tab, and for more advanced players, this is just a quicker way to get through a tab

  • There are no harmonics friend.

  • @PuppetDani live versions

  • ur sound sucks dude ur video isnt teaching me

  • Tabs would do! hahaha Superimpose in time

Anywho, I hope one doesn't need PAF Gibson to get that sound, It's nice

  • Not a bad version , but it aint right. The harmonic but isnt played where you are playin it. I should put my money where my mouth is and show you how he does it, but I cant at the momemet. Ps I am NOT trying to be clever.

  • Great lesson, great playing!

  • I REALLY REALLY LIKED THIS... And I think, this is the exact one... Some may confuse this because of sound/amplification issues BUT notes and technique is almost perfect...

    Thanks and congratulations friend...

  • Wow nice i like those little failing high sounds ;)

    it's a bit stylish

  • its similar but no offense you'll never manage to master this song as well as MK does :) and i think you're aware of that, but you're close to it

  • it would be nice if this guy learned to play guitar before trying to teach others to play

  • your very good at teaching, really nice mannerred which is everything in teaching.

i like the humbucker sound as you play the phrasing very well so it is nice to hear it through a heavier sound.

i never knew about the harmonics . thanks for upload

  • WTF !

  • your tone is spot on. some people are just retarded

  • @elliottfromm they haven't even heard the song

  • not bad OP .not bad

  • Strange

  • I think sounds really cool ... rock this way ! :D

  • bad...

  • don't know what some people are talking about! This is awesome!

  • Nice Job .............Thanks for your time and effort!

  • Sounds out of tune.

  • I have the same guitar! Epiphone Les Paul!

  • better keep practicing buddy.sounds like shit

  • its very good!!!!! i dnt know why the people say that its wrong!!! 5 stars!

  • it;s very fine

  • grating on my ear bro....

  • are you mad?! damn you broke my ear!

  • hard to understand u dude :o where u from? btw nice playing :)

  • perfect dude. thats how i learned it by ear too

  • just a few pointers.....knopfler actually uses the neck pickup quite a lot and originally played that riff using that configuration.....the harmonics you're hearing on that track are as a result of fingure dubbing with the left hand punctuating the phrases of the riff.listen again to the riff....the accenting and phrasing inparticular.

  • nice one, fucking brilliant sound!

  • omg terrible sound!!!!!! pleaze stop!!!!

  • I don't get all the criticisms... sure he probably doesn't have the gear to mimic the real riff but he's got the notes down.

  • Yeah that sounds sick! but the only problem is the harmonics deffo sound like a wrong note on guitar hero..

  • thats the way ya do it!

  • Awesome dude, better than the one I posted :)

  • Nice guitar, so you can try with a wah pedal in the deep position to get the same sound.

  • great work dude!

  • Great stuff!!

  • I think it's very important someone has taken up time to show us how to play with fingers in this song. This is the most important part in most Knopfell's songs and that's what makes his songs sound so different! thanks a lot man! :-D

  • I think it's very important someone has taken up time to show us how to play with fingers in this song. This is the most important part in most Knopfell's songs and that's what makes his songs sound so different! thanks a lot dude! :-D

  • Great lesson, thanx dude.

This riff is actualy harder than you might think.

  • no more harmonics

  • Really good, thanks for the lesson man.

I like your les paul with a fender strap on it :P

  • best interpretation of the riff.

  • nice!

  • nice accent man !!! and great playing

  • turn back the tone knob a bit that should do it

  • just shut the fuck up u cant play a guitar

  • thumbs up cuz u look a lot like OTACON FROM METAL GEAR SOLID!!!! O_O

  • @ZeroRebirthTWITTER HAHAHAHAHHHHAHAHA *****

  • Brilliant. Just use a bit of Wah for that vowel sound!!!

    All the best,

    Matt.

  • WWooWW that was hoooorrrrriiibbbbllllleeeee dude !!!!!!!!!!! : (

  • I gotta respect this, better than I can do, but the harmonics do sound a bit strange.

  • That was great dude! You played it well.. I thought i was playing it right untill i heard that!

  • @federicoperale лох педальный, на себя посмотри :D

  • I wanna see any of you pricks even come close to keeping up with a Mark Knopfler riff. I think the lad is doing a fine job. so fuck off.

  • I don´t think any of us ever got that riff right... sorry dude.

  • The harmonic is wrong but the rest if fine. What makes the difference is then the sound. Needs a cry baby in half position and the fine tune and that's it...

I made a full cover of this song if you wish to hear it... It is not perfect, there are some mistakes but i like it anyway...

  • @anixzon please sod off

  • @anixzon I'm pretty for this song Mark used a gibson les paul aswell.

  • @anixzon Humbuckers are some of the best pickups in the world, ya fricken n00b

  • @anixzon what are you shitting about humbuckers? knopfler plays a les paul for this song...

  • @falcorne019 Right! He used a LP with both HUMBUCKERS on , one thrown out of phase with a pull-up switch (it wasn't a wah-wah or anything like that). Then he adjusted the volume of the bridge HB until he found that sweet spot (this from a contemporary article on him in G.P. mag)

  • @mrp454 He actually had a les paul specially made for him, with effects already built into the pickups.

  • @anixzon Humbuckers pickups are the best, ask anyone who has a Les Paul, especially the 1959 Les Paul!

  • @anixzon Humbuckers pickups are the best, ask anyone who has a Les Paul, especially the 1959 Les Paul! In fact do some research, the song was recorded with a Gibson Les Paul and Mark Knopfler modeled this guitar sound after Billy Gibbons from ZZ Top. He also recorded this song with a Wah Pedal rocked at certain position, Jimmy Page also used to do that!

  • @AntiReal2010 Humbuckers are good for some things. Not all things. Single coil and rails are nice for certain things.

  • @anixzon @anixzon

Idiot! You want to sound like you know something because EVERYONE knows that MK uses Single Cs primarily BUT MK has used humbuckers for this song numerous times! This guy played the riff really well and I bet you will not be able to touch this in 10 years.

  • @anixzon you do realise it was recorded on humbuckers right

    idiot.

  • @anixzon you chat shit about humbuckers

  • ok, thanks!! Very good teaching!!

  • also if you are ever in the mood could you teach us how to play the song again but with a better camera and stuff like that

  • what are your guitar settings for this song

do you use any peddals and could you pull the song off on a squire or epifone dot

  • Great song!

  • u missed a lot. but nice guitar.

  • Excellent version of the song. I love the harmonics you put in there. Very good.

  • excellent - doesn't matter about the sound quality - it's seeing the finger shapes that's important

  • damn man. you need a pop filter for that mic

  • Maybe you should get a mic made for music...

  • good version, good harmonics, thanx for sharing them......

  • no offense, but this sound sucks hard

  • thanks"!

  • @deviantan021

    fuck you haters!!!!

nice blues sound you got there i love your les paul what is it epiphone?

  • @deviantan021 no offense, but you talk shit

  • @t3rmin41 no offense, but you're deaf

    and a fucktard

  • @t3rmin41 He's talking about the tone, I don't like it either

  • is that epiphone les paul? guitar

  • im pretty sure its a gibson.

  • the woman outta incredibles lol better than me gotta say

  • Comment removed

  • Dont use the the harmonic it sound's like you are hitting a bum note, sound's brutal

  • @madsquidly i agree

  • good to see you use harmonics where others wouldnt

  • he looks a bit like wesley presly in 2 pints of lager and a packet of crisps :P

  • What do you mean not quite right? Sounds just as good as the real song!

  • not quite right

  • ahahahaha LMAO @ indestructableforce,

  • :D

    Nice playing though!

  • those harmonic bits sound just like a 'wrong note' in guitar hero

  • excactly because that's the sense in gh xD

  • @joepamplin guitar hero nerds..

  • nice mate

  • wow this is the best cover ive seen for this riff

  • yo man thanks for uploading this it was very helpful...

I am trying to play it on my guitar but it just doesnt sound the same are you using an effects pedal? if so what type do i need to sound the same as yours?

  • Amazing to finally be able to play this! Cheers for the lesson.

  • muito bom!

  • wot guitar is that??

  • i think its a sunburst les paul ?

  • Great man!

  • i dont like it very much

  • nice up to favs

  • fucking great

  • Great job! Wish I could play like that...

  • This is pretty cool, dude!

You did a great job on all the details like the harmonics to catch a really natural impression of what Dire Straits started out with.

PS: I read once in an interview that MK used a Les Paul and a WhaWha pedal to create that telefone sound for the studio recording we all know.

  • haha pretty good, its not like the blasphemy some other Mk rapers do.

  • well i think it sounds good

  • its off once again

  • Real close - you're just letting too many chord instances ring with leftover energy from whichever note preceded. Too legato, needs to be staccato by adding in more instances of picking, and to positively pluck each chord (no let-ring). Lots of mute/pick with each string will make your sound just like the original.

Great job (!!) on 1) having the harmonics present and 2) showing correct harmonics.

Turn your tone all the way down on the treble pickup and you'll get closer to the recording also.

  • Real close - you're just letting too many chords ring with leftover energy from whatever note preceded... try positively picking each two-note chord with one finger on each string and picking at every interval. Your style is too legato for this song and needs to be choppier so each chord hops to the next. This will make it sound like the original.

  • doesnt sound like on the record. are you sure this is right?

  • is that a signature?

  • Im sure you are a very good guitarist Federico, but it sounds nothing like mr Knopfler

  • that's what you think, my dear friend

  • to bright to mutch gain

  • Its cool but its not the same its like a mothern version

    p.s nice guitar b : )

  • sry but doesn't sound like him at all XD.. but ur good and nice guitar btw ^^

  • very different from the original.

  • you play it wrong ^^

  • Hey, you are great. Its clear and detail in how show the fingering position. I enjoy and now can play just where you stop. Preferably you could complete the song.

cheers and thanks ,you are great.

  • A great lesson, and a very simple way to play the song. Looking forward to the next lesson.

  • ton son sonne comme une tonne de briques c'est super

  • Thanks a bunch. Been wanting to learn these riffs for years. Great feel & technique.

    Piky Pete

  • hi from greece..nice fingers!!(lol)

  • take care of your feel and the rhythm, its not correct man! Hear the original!

  • hey dude, what effect do yuo use? is it an auto wah??

  • I'd probably choose a ferrari over a ford focus, just my opinion though.

  • great guitar, great performed

  • Thanx for taking the time to do this great guitar playing. Is it standard tuning?

  • very nice video, good demonstration although, in my opinion, it might sound better withought the natural harmonics, and rather let the notes ring, also, id probably choose a strat over les paul, just my opinion. well done though.

  • BIV! BUV! xD

  • xaxaxaxaxaxa

  • Thank you for the leeson, well done I like the sound of the LP wondering what amp or stomp box?

  • cool

  • how do u get that sound

  • beautiful guitar!

  • i agree.... some sound!

  • Great Job ... thank you for posting ... 5 stars

  • secondo me gli armonici non ci stanno te li sei inventati

  • no guarda ci sono eccome..ascoltati bene l'originale

  • Dream full ! A very good education - fear I'm not able to play it in this good manner.

  • No offence at all dude but a gibson with fender holding thing? Nah just kidding you did a good job playing exactly like the record. And nice lesson too!

  • Very good job!!!

    Ciao

  • Very good. Thanks for the initiative!

  • wtf disaster you are very very bad

  • agreed.

  • hey hey hey at least he tried. I think hes not all that bad. Better than me

  • please "jet" and "nitrous" try to say something interesting or get a life

  • that shit rocks...i'd use the neck pickup...but your bridge is crisp so i can't fault you for it. the original tone is kinda thick and creamy...but i like the fact that you do your own thing. rock on bro

  • got my vote for all time best lesson, and the sound was dead perfect. give yourself a pat on the back, well done.

  • thanks!!!!

  • your the only person on youtube who plays it right and its killing me cuz i jest cant learn it for some reason but annyway nice job and hopefully someday i will learn it from you lol

  • Hi, I`m from Argentina I`m making a band and we play many songs of Dire Straits... Thanks man this was very usfull to me.- I``m not used to play with (distortion)...
