The were called AA/FA or fuel altereds. The were top fuel engines in short-wheelbase, open wheel cars. They were outlawed by the NHRA about 20 years ago because they were too hard to control. I saw these routinely in the 70s and they were the best show on the dragstrip.

Anyone think it looks like the Suzuki Escudo that was, by far, the fastest car on Gran Turismo 3? I'm not even sure if such a car exists, but it looks alot like that and peaked at almos 2000 hp with stage 4 turbo. Video game, I know, but the game was supposed to be realistic.

These cars were called fuel-altereds. They were so dangerous, both to drivers and spectators that they were outlawed many years ago, but are still raced for exhibition at nostalgia events. They are awe inspiring machines!
