  • Great Video man haha ive been looking at this car for awhile and now i am sold DSG looks greatt!!!! sounds great also

  • DSG RULES!!!

  • @puppy38wuppy I agree:D

  • Zer gut indeed! Nice video man, keep them coming.

  • @BGRedStarBG thank you! I will...

  • Is it necessary to lift off the throttle when shifting with one of these?

  • @PooPoo2U No you can go to the red line wap the paddle and simply continue accelerating :)

  • lol @ 5:50

  • @ProudPoppin You can do either. If you are not wanting to slow down in order to speed up again - like in the Apex of a corner, you simply let the DSG downshift on it's own (at a red light for example). It will gradually do it in tiptronic mode... It will "dramatically" Downshift in Sport... almost immediately as you take your foot off the accelerator (it thinks you are coming into a corner racing and knows you want to get grip and accelerate out of the corner)!? :-)

  • Lol I found this video again, just to watch the end when you mock ppl who talk about the dsg. Halarious !

  • I have a question. While riding the D, whether it can be transferred to S ?

  • @admir2410 After you stop, yes. Some say if there is no load on the engine you can do it. But it will immediately stop shifting like normal and go all the way up to the RED LINE before changing. And it sounds louder too!

  • @gtiman67 Heya! By the way what do you think of thr VW Gold R, Im from England and if you fully spec up the VM Golf R then it can cost aroun £43,000 which is VERY expensive for a golf.

  • @edb1980 That's too much in my opinion... And it still wont be a GTI!? I heard we will get a watered down version here in the US not the Euro version :(

  • Thanks for the video! It was real informative and you are really good on camera. (though you can't actually be seen, you really know how to make us feel the way you do about the car...) It was very clear the way you explained and I really enjoyed watching your videos. And don't mind these othere negative comments,I think they are jealous,I mean the VW Mk5 GTI is a great cat indeed,(they probably can't afford one),so great choice in buiyng that car! Thanks again for the videos!

  • @OLTCITKA Much oblidged! I am working on some new ones soon.

  • @OLTCITKA

I agree good vid, I think that Gtiman67 should do ricky gervias style pod cast internet podcast, he is naturally very funny! The rant at the end "if you do not own the mk5 etc etc" genius!

  • I think this Video is comedy gold

"I can just go in sport mode and kick your ass that way"

Plus the fact that this dude sounds exactly like Bill Hicks......Please make more videos!

  • Thanks for wasting my time asshole!

I thought the first video was an accident, but you are truly retarded.

You surely love yourself and don't stop talking shit instead of making an interesting video about the car.

  • Hmm what year is that gti from? and how many horse powers?

  • @kattlikzm 2008 and I was only stage 1 (APR software) when this was filmed which was 252 bhp 303 btq... I am now stage 2 when I dropped the downpipe and got reflashed for free with APR (actually $24 just for labor time to reflash it) and my numbers are 270 bhp with 321 btq NOW! :-)

  • @gtiman67 Sweeeeet! :D

  • omg this guy is an asshole.

  • @mahchymk93 Dennis Leary sings: I love to drive slow in the superfast lane while drivers behind me are going insane... I luv to park in handicap spaces while handicapped people make handee.... capped.... faces

  • You need to stand still to switch to S from D? (and press the brake?) or can u switch it while driving? Thnx cheers

  • Exige. Believe it.

  • No. He said that on sport mode it often gets annoying because it down shifts by itself. I have an MKV R32 and it does get quite annoying so I tend to not use the Sport mode unless I do launch controls. Nice vid though!

  • Me too. Four cylinders. 1.8 liters. Naturally aspirated. 180hp. 4.8 second 0 - 60 times.

  • @xtnuser5338 I find that really hard to believe, considering most high end sport cars barely break 4 seconds. Unless you're driving an Elise I don't believe it.

  • Me too. Four cylinders. 1.8 liters. Naturally aspirated. 180hp. 4.8 second 0 - 60 times.

  • I have 180hp and get 4.8 second 0 - 60 times.

  • @xtnuser5338 yeah but I only have 4 cylinders?

  • @gtiman67 only four and you can do all that?! What size is your engine?

  • @xtnuser5338 - i call BS... unless your driving a motorcycle! your not doing 4.8s to 60mph... maybe kmh

  • I think the transmission is fantastic. I think the GTi is a great car. I think your video is informative despite a couple of inaccuracies.

But seriously have you been driving a base Corolla all your life before now? That's the only explanation I can come up with for your impression that the GTi can somehow whip everything on the road.

I've got 180hp and about 160tq that will walk all over a GTi (and the GTO too by the way).

  • @xtnuser5338 I am 270 bhp 323 btq at Stage 2 APR... 0-60 5.7-8 seconds! :-/

  • I have a audi a4 2007.

I was wondering what the difference between down and up shifting? new driver.

ive always liked the idea of a manual car. so i want to drive my automatic like a manual. i know its not the same but stilll folks.

Anyways. if i down shift what happens, and if i up shift what happens? and when should i do either one? THANKS

  • @TheKidIsMt The car will up shift / down shift whenever you want it to, unless you try to up shift at like 1000 RPM in 3rd gear, it wont do it.

  • so no gear shifting is required?

  • @RAJLFC4EVA In "D" mode No! In Tiptronic YES! You must use paddles or shifter in order to shift

  • got a 2.0 fsi.. sport gear is the best! =D

  • the gti downshifts for u if u dont right?

  • @santasb0w Yes downshifting is optional even in tiptronic mode. If you want to downshift because you want to grip into a corner you may... 3rd gear is best for accelerating OUT of corners or coming onto onramps into the Interstate at highway speeds.

  • Perfect review IMO. I'm also in Maitland BTW!

  • @Femicide09 Hey... what a small world afterall and thanks!

  • @gtiman67 No problem! Just picked up a MKV today!

  • Did he exceed 65 mph????

  • I'm from England, uk, and I think you are brilliant! Love the review, very thorough, and I know what you mean about people going in the fast lane to drive Miss daisey!

  • @rjm8282 GOD bless the UK! And Thank you! My FAV show? TOPGEAR!!!

  • Very informative and helpful video. it's freaky how smart this car is

  • @ray8u123 Thank You and yes it is... my GTI knew you were gonna say that (~_~)!

  • dear gtiman what do you think with mark 6 gti? is it as good as mark 5?

  • @syeder11 Short answer Yes... Long answer, I think if it wasn't for the total revitalization of the GTI in making the Mark V... they wouldn't have basically used the Mark V platform and changed subtle outward appearances, the Suspension, Camshaft, and uses a chain now instead of the Timing-Belt, and call it a Mark 6. It really should be considered a version 2 of the Mark V GTI. It is still a great car however I think the Mark V looks better in every way. Too tame, not as fun looking, like a golf

  • dear gtiman what do you think about mark 6 gti? is it as good as mark 5?

  • I hope by the time my 2010 GTI hits 40k, the prices will go down.

  • @Mudig YES, put some money aside... each week for your DSG... it is worth it!

  • what is the cost to maintain a car like this?

  • @stickpeepul Let's see... You must only use 93 Octane fuel (no big deal)... and it comes stock with FULL SYTHETIC Castrol Syntec 5W-40. Which you can change every 10K miles at about 70 Bucks. I go about 7,000 miles between changes. Now the DSG transmission Is very expensive at 40K as in addition to the $300 service you have to get you also must get the DSG serviced for $420!? They change parts, the internal filter and drain the fluid and put in new fluid. I don't have to do that again until 80K!

  • @gtiman67 im about to get an 09 GTI (autobahn pckg) and currently there are 34k miles on it. But just so I am clear on your response, will I have to shell out a total of $720 (300 trans + 420dsg) when I get to 40k?

  • @cjsph88 If you want to keep the 100,000 mile extended warranty from VW for the DSG transmission intact you must have it serviced by 40,000 miles. Unfortunately The $40,000 mile service is a BIG one too. Ask if it still has the warranty and you can get it before the 40,000 miles either the service or the DSG service so you wont have to do them both at once... you will not have to have the DSG serviced again until 80,000 miles. But you want it serviced they change filters and parts inside the DSG

  • that was awesome! i think i just shitted bricks! i havent seen a trani like this until today and omg it kicks ass!

  • 5:54 LOL!

  • Does the DSG have the "creep" effect conventional automatics have?

Ie if you put it in drive and let your foot off the break does it move or stay stationary till you press the accellerator.

Also does your boost meter measure the pressure from the supercharger, the turbo or both combined?

Also your fuel consumption is around 22MPG- is that not quite low? What would the conventioal manual be

  • @blondemax and another question i had:

If your in 6th- can you shift to 4th or 3rd easily or does that upset the transmission (as i assume those gears are not preselected)

  • @blondemax

    1. Yes. However it works diffrent in the D and R. In reverse it works in more confident way so you're able concentrate on the brake pedal.

    2. GTI has only the turbo.

    3. Yes it is. On the manual it would be the same. Maybe a little bit smaller.

    4. The gears aren't preselected. The fluency on down shifting depends on the... driver. The shift is quite fluent, but immediately after it the engine starts to break the car. Pushing the accelerator a little more would prevent from it.

  • @blondemax If you shift from P (or N) to D and let the foot off the break, the car starts to move.

The fuel consumption difference between conventional Manual and DSG transmission is almost nil.

And if you want, you can shift down from 6th to 4th or 3rd gear, if the Rpm can stay under the red line. Otherwise the ECU won't allow you to shift down.

  • what year did the gti's start getting DSG and do all models have a turbo? thanks nice informative video

  • @jam3s121 When the GTI Mark 5 arrived in 2006... and yes ALL GTI Mark V's have the 2.0 FSI Turbo. The Mark 6 has the 2.0 TSI Turbo. There are really subtle diff's. I think the FSI means Fueled Straight Injection, and the TSI means Timed Straight Injection. Inspired by the Formula One Design of spraying fuel at the exact moment you use it. The Fuel pump is a extremely high pressured one. I also believe the 1.8 Turbo was in all GTI mark 4's prior but doesn't produce as much power as the 2.0 T

  • @gtiman67

I have to correct you there my friend. There are Mk V GTIs with the 2.0 TSI Turbo. I know, I have one ('09). VW actually started rolling out the 2.0 TSI halfway through 2008. So a number of '08 and all '09 Mk V GTIs have the 2.0 TSI not the 2.0 FSI. If you look around on the MkV forums you'll see the differences. Mostly it's an improvement in reliability, not performance.

Still a great video. You seem very worried about speeding though, are the cops tough where you are?

  • @Murphy82nd You are exactly right it was toward the end of 2008 when the final Mark 5's were being produced... I was in ETAtuning when I saw one that Summer. I noticed that it was different looking under the hood too. They claimed that it was more powerful but my guy told me he didn't notice any difference in performance.

  • @gtiman67

Could you tell me if you can shift between D and S without stoping the car?

I know that it's possible to shift from D to Tiptronic and Tiptronic to D, so I presume that D to S is also allowed.

  • @pazaj0 Sure you can! It's easily allowed to shift from D to S by pressing the left button on the gear knob and pushing the lever down to S.

Then you have only to put the pedal to the metal!

  • Nice video, man! I own a Passat Wagon with DSG and I'll never go back to manual transmission.

  • @moddingpark Here here... I don't blame you. How fast can they go?

  • DSG thx for a cool vid bro

  • @energiefreak Your welcome!

  • Awesome vid mate!! .. I own a vanilla Lancer ES (and have always driven sticks) ..but I wanna upgrade and a GTI is a likely candidate .. didnt know how to use tiptronic/paddle shifts so wanted more info bout them..and now I have a good idea :) .. cpl of q's though ..can you move the floor shifter b/w S and D (and D+/-) while the car's in motion? (like if you had sudden changes in road/traffic conditions etc).... and secondly do all trip-tronics revert to 1 or N when you stop all of a sudden?

  • @silverwater006 Yes you can but I do not... I wait until it is fully stopped. second question: NO I f you have it in tiptronic it will stay in tiptronic meaning 6-5-4-3-2-1 will stay on dash... mine reverted back into "D" mode because I had it in Drive mode and interacted with the paddles while it was moving (temporary tiptronic)!?

  • Great videos! They really helped me understand how the DSG behaves in different driving styles. I hope to get a MKVI soon!

  • @ABSjazz THX! yes the Mark 6 has an automatic suspension system or so I have heard...

  • im driving a 99 mk3 wolfsburg edition right now. next car will have a DSG transmission, nice videos

  • @vwfromhell love the wolfsburg YAH!

  • Thanks for the video. I was choosing between manual and DSG and I think I'll buy DSG.

  • @misao1654 You can't go wrong either way but the DSG is an awesome transmission :-D

  • Your videos rock man..just got my cw mk6 2dr...coming from a 1.8 civic...WOW haha

  • @Darkenvamp thanks

  • Do you still own your MK5? I love my Mk6!

  • @mortisvan Yah Yah! GTI forever :-O

  • lol love the part of when hes making fun of the english bloke :D

  • How do you know when to shift up or down? and is it good to use the DSG regularly? i heard is messes up your engine.

  • @BiGKeV620 Based on personal preference... But if you want to get the most out of every gear I suggest shifting at about 5000-5500 rpm's. But you can shift however you like. If you forget to shift (which can happen from a dead stop), it will rev a certain amout of time in the red, and then realize you forgot to shift and shift up for you to protect your engine:) And no, the DSG was designed to be used just as I do. Drive it in "D", "S", tiptronic, and use Launch Control as you see fit!

  • @gtiman67 Thanks alot. really helpful.

  • @BiGKeV620 Ya!

  • Great video. Will definitely buy a DSG over a manual now. Thanks.

  • @davideustace Glad to hear it...

  • hey, gtiman, are you doing your own service on your car, like the 40K DSG oil and filter change? I'm gearing up for that now, just wondering what your experiences have been.

  • @ShiekUrBooty I am saving for my DSG service this Thursday God willing and wont have to do it again until 80K. It costs about $364 for DSG oil and filter change! But I also got a letter from VW stating that my DSG is extended under warranty until 100,000 miles or 10 years. Which is awesome! But get it serviced so you will not lose your warranty

  • Sport mode in the DSG is definitely not for wishy washy driving patterns, it confuses the tranny and is not kind on the ride experience.

Because I have the TDI diesel Jetta, a lot of times I'm using D mode for a fuel economical driving pattern and while doing so, many times I will switch over and use the S mode for when I have to downshift for deceleration.

Since the DSG works so smooth in D or S mode, I rarely use the manual shift mode for anything other than demonstrating it to passngrs

  • I accept tha is the most advanced transmission and it is awsome, but it is not perfect, 1 you cant use the shifterr stick in S mode thats bad in a circuit race and 2nd in S mode you should do the shifting at any rev you want theres no way to do it wrong, a kid, grandmom drandpa or a dog can make perfect shifting with that transmission, that is not racing is boring.. and dont say loosers to the other people please there are cars fasters and betters like my MEGANE R26R stage2 jaja=p

  • Love my 2010 GTI with DSG. The purist claim that driving without a manual tranny disconnects the driver from the car. I call Bulls@*t one that one. Drive it, you might like it.

Can you provide more information on you boost gauge?

  • @mortisvan Yavol! I am amazed how people try to make you feel bad because you like to drive in tiptronic with paddles. Watch F1 drivers they use PADDLES! Can anyone argue that they are driving?! I have played NEED FOR SPEED since the begining and I have fun driving. The GTI is NFS come to life:) IT is actually MORE satisfying pulling out with both hands on the wheel and zooming away from other cars as they fumble with their clutch and hands while trying to steer at the same time. Old fashioned:)

  • Sehr gut! Did you try out the new Mk VI GTI, or better, the Mk VI R with 270 hp? That thing is a beast :O

  • @bf2modsde Neine! not yet...

  • god i love your videos man you just so funny haha another great video i watched...i hope to see more

  • @blindrawing Thank you... I am working on new ideas now for more videos upcoming:)

  • I've always wanted a GTi ^^

This did not change my mind!

  • @jonen9494 you should buy an Mazdapseed Focus Rs Focus St or a MEGANE R26R they are better more powerfull and more agressive disign

  • @JRoddvelar

    Seriously?!

MEGANE R26R? It doesnt even have a radio..

  • I want that car! The joys of a DSG. Why would anyone want to drive a manual car after seeing this. I'm converted and live in the UK. Impressive performance, what engine size and do you ever get more than 23mpg?

  • @urbex2007 I get 31-34 mpg if I stay in "D" mode... but if I drive in tiptronic and rev it higher I get about 22-25 mpg (still pretty good)... and if I drive in Sport mode exclusively, about 19-22 mpg as it does not change gears until you reach the red line in each gear (`~_~')

  • Very nice video man! I always wanted to see the DSG in action. All these other youtubers are just showing launch control sequences and other nonsense things.

What really got me in your video was that you never "feathered" the gas while shifting. I have an 04 M3 and my SMG transmission requires you to let off the gas while shifting, which if you ask me sucks! I cant wait to find a buyer for this car and go back to VAG!

  • @gtiman67 Sorry to a knit-picker but your explanation isn't accurate. Two clutches, one for 1-3-5 and another for 2-4-6. As someone else said, it predicts which gear is mostly likely to be selected (either one gear up or one down) and has that gear engaged but the clutch for that shaft isn't engaged. Also fuzzy logic is not the concept of learning the driver's habits, it's something else (google it).

  • what year is your GTI? and what is the "Mark 5" compared to the GTI i see at my local VW dealer

  • @johnr1031 The GTI's you see at your local dealership are the Mark VI! You do not have to do anything to your GTI to make it great... it comes with 200hp and 207 lb-ft of torque stock! You can go 0-60 in 6.8 seconds!! And the with the DSG transmission you can shift gears in 8 milliseconds faster than a Ferrari Enzo's sequential gearbox!!! You will have fun making chumps of these huge muscle cars that are beat off the line by your humble little GTI!!!!

  • @thespagwing I thought only punks raced on the street

  • what about launch control? or were you beaten in a race against a datsun?

  • Well if you don't care about gas mileage.. then sure leave your car in 4th gear all day. But the last two gears are there for a reason.

  • And also, if you're in tiptronic mode and you don't manually shift at all, is there a point where the car will take over and automatically shift up one gear?

  • When you were talking about the 5th way of shifting, will the car also briefly go into tiptronic if you're in sport mode? Or is that only for drive?

  • great vid! Great voice too..not boring at all! lol

  • Awesome. GREAT VIDEO!

  • One star only dawg, try to kick some Supra ass. This fool has no boost, and thinks he's da fastest dude out there. U can kiss my 4" tailpipe with ur GTI.

Echt so ein Idiot sieht man sehr selten muss ich sagen, haha.

  • wow relax. Get a Stage 4 and beat the shit out of a Supra haha :D

  • I gonna buy this car if my current car(Golf 4) breaks down :)

  • Hi from Portugal. Very nice video. I didn't yet understood this dsg clutch, until now. Very informative. And in fact, it looks fun to drive. Safe driving!

  • Actually, at least in drive, it will roll back on a hill, although only a short distance. First instinct for me when I feel the roll though is to hammer the gas. Problem solved. lol

  • Thanks for uploading this video, it was very informative. Just two questions, when you are at a stop and you let off the brake, does the car move forward like in a conventional automatic, or will it stay still. Also, when your on a hill, and you let go of the brake, does it roll backwards like a manual trans with the clutch pressed?

  • 1.) It will move forward 2.) It will not roll backwards

  • Thank you for your reply. I only asked because I saw the Top Gear review of the Aston Martin Vanquish with a trans that was similar, but the Aston Martin rolled backwards on a hill.

  • were do you have your turbo meter? is that on your steering wheel lol?

  • Off center dash pod unit from New South...

  • thanks very much for the video this is just what I needed very helpful!

  • you are welcome!

  • "you are racin brotha" nice car

  • thanx for the demonstration

i just got my first car, GTI 2010

    and i had no idea...

  • "a actually its quite annoying that it......"

    xD HAHAHHAHAHAHAHA!

    n1

    5 Stars again

  • lol ! thanks... i know what the multifunction display is ! ROFL...

just ddnt know how that feature workd :):) ! Thanks

  • How does it know the max speed limit on the road that you are on ? does it like use gps? or do you set it ?

my 2004 GLI V6 does not do that... but then again its 4 years old !

lol i hope i dont sound stupid !

    Thanks

  • In video games it's called the HUD on the GTI it is call the MFD you can set it at various speeds - the next highest one is 100 MPH! I set it at 65 MPH to keep me line (^_^)

  • Is there any way to put the DSG in a Golf GLS? Or would that just be silly? lol

  • I don't think so... and if there was it would probably be too costly...

  • Great info and quite articulate I should add as well in the speeches given for the GTI performance. I myself owns a Golf. Not so powerful like your GTI, though it's getting me to reconsider on looking into the GTI. I like the quick shifting ability on it!

  • Nice vid!

QUESTION: Do you have to (or rather, is it best to) come to a stop before switching between automatic and tipronic modes?

I noticed that you did in the video. However, you can obviously switch out of automatic mode into the temporary DSG mode by the simple click of the paddle shifter. I'm confused...

    Thoughts? Thanks.

  • Yes, I would always be at a stopped position before changing from "D" with the SHIFTER into "Tiptronic" mode. However while driving in "DRIVE" mode you may simply interact with your paddles to TEMPORARILY go into Tiptronic mode while remaining in "D" mode... the DSG will automatically switch back after a short time of not interacting the paddles with no ill effects to the tranny. Like when a mini van thinks he should pull out in front of the GTI... NO WAY BROTHER... hit those paddles and WOOSH!

  • very informative and also funny...lol not like some videos that are soooo long and boring...

  • LOL at the 0-60 you went 0-80. haha nice.

  • Very informative and well made video. Thanks a bunch, really helped.

  • nice man :D cool Boost info is the GTI modded i also got some vids of 0-140 km a houre on my page ^^

  • thats awesome, um i recently bought a subaru B4 2002, >> so should have bought a golf GTI but um mine is also tiptronic with twin turbo, does my gear shifter work the same way?? it only have 4 gears....

  • not sure... but probably not.

  • no thiis is DSG in the golf is very fast shifting i don't think a subaru has DSG

but also very awsome car ^^

  • I haven't replaced my Continential Sport Contact2 Summer Performance "TYRES" yet... I drive it hard too. But each tire is about $257.00 rated "Y" for speed which is 180 mph! When you buy the GTI get the tire allowance for replacement up to $5000.00 for "road hazards" and if you go over a hazard they will be free up to $5000.00!?

  • This (and part one) is by far the best damned explanation of this transmission, ever. You had me laughing and I appreciate both the hands-on footage and your real time narration. Brilliant work, man.

If you don't mind one really off topic question about the car-how expensive is it when it comes time to get new tires for it? I commute a long way and drive pretty hard, and my current car is just ridiculous when it comes to the $ for new tires. Apologies for the q, it's just that I'm in the market.
