@jojotremb i couldn't find one but its a really easy song to do it by ear, it really dosn't have to be the same style as this song u can play it alittle differently. like i kinda play this song as his style but its alittle different
He plays so wonderful, so soulfull, with so much feeling! Still, the music is written by an Italian and the notes are written in the western, Occidental manner, and an Oriental playing it is like......kind of an invasion of territory.....and there are so many of them playing our music! Still, very nice rendition, his, Chan Ahn's, Kang Lee's, and some 200 more millions of them....next America's president will be Asian.
While this man is obviously a great musician, he should stick to the trumpet. This is as far from cornet sound as it is, probably, possible to get. I've noticed many Japanese/Korean players struggle with this, although being otherwise brilliant; they do not even get close to the open, soft tone a cornet is supposed to have, sounding rather mechanical, or even "dead". Don't get me wrong, apart for this sounding like a sibelius trumpet, the musical performance is outstanding!
@gundumauna I fully agree! Imagine, Maestro Moriccone, in all his genius, made sure that this piece can be played through so many musical instruments, i.e., piano, trumpet, euphonium, violin, organ, clarinet, OBOE.
There's a brass band arrangement for this with a solo for soprano cornet. I believe it sounds just as good as the original if not better but hey its one of the most beautiful songs ever composed :D what ever instrument its played on.
I think any instrumentalist who can play with such integrity of pitch and tone (like this guy, and many others) can play it on whatever instrument they choose. Yo-yo Ma rocks it on the cello. Don't go knocking Yo-yo.
I must say that I probably would concur that this song does sound it's best on an oboe in most arrangements, but this particular performance still stands out as one of the best. This man brings a tangible dignity to the piece, no senseless over expression no lavish interpretation of dynamics, just the song, at it's simplest, and yet it's purest, and most elegant of forms. And you know what, it does sounds very British...that part I can't quite pinpoint why, but it does.
Heart-warming melody, written for oboe, but who cares. It's not like only oboes have the right to play it. Performances like this really make me want to get back to cornet, which this is by the way. Not a trumpet, a cornet, there IS a not insignificant difference.
anyonghaseyo I really like you when your playing trumpet I'm also a musician and if you dont mind can I ask the copy of this piece for my practicing because I like that piece so much.More power and God bless you.Kamsahamnida.
If one song I ever so loved, it would be "Gabriel's Oboe." I own about ten different renditions of this song. Some are piano, some trumpet, some strings (Yo-Yo Ma), some guitar, and some organ. Of course my favorite is with the oboe. I would not say this is my favorite rendition by any means, but I respect it, and I do not have a problem with the trumpet being used. It is creative license. It transcends. And it is up to the individual ear to make the decision for one's self, not for everyone.
I can understand a trumpet player choosing to transcribe a piece for his/her recital, but it is embarrassing that any real establishment would condone having a trumpet player - no matter how amazing - play a famous oboe piece in an orchestra backed performance. Not to mention it is clearly not written for trumpet and just sounds awful. I wish I hadn't stumbled on this - it makes my skin crawl. What a shame.
I have to agree, the trumpet is a great instrument but it doesn't suit this piece. It can't help but sound a bit triumphant where it should be pensive.
@smithgaryh1 (music belongs to the world not to a specific instrument.... are you going to tell Yo Yo Ma he can only play original 'cello pieces?) variety is good, it's great to have different perspectives on pieces - some work, some don't... this one does...
This is one of the most beautiful arrangements and performances of this piece that I have heard. The soloist is an outstanding internationally renownwed performer. Who are you people to criticise? Please post a video of one of your performances with an orchestra of this quality or simply shut up.
@tinamarie1998 Thanks! You get fed up listening to all these guys who seem to know everything about everything. Nice to hear that the world is not full of 'experts'!
@paddyjimbo What a childish and stupid argument. People are allowed to like or dislike things without being able to produce them themselves. As it happens, I think this is utterly dire. Not a piece of music for brass, no matter how skilful the player. An object lesson in how to ruin a decent tune.
@Limpandtotheleft you're thinking is so linear! It doesn't matter what instrument you play so long the true emotions of the musical piece is carried over. FYI playing this on a trumpet is far more challenging than playing it on other instrument.
Firstly, to correct myself, the timings are not all off. I worded that wrongly. Have you ever heard the piece written for the movie? He plays with it alot. His "interpretation" changes the style of the piece. And no, the orchestra is actually right on time
Oy... just close your eyes and listen, enjoy the music, stop getting so technical, just enjoy a brilliant player who plays sublimely well...lovely stuff :0)x
Up to a point. Its a bit like comparing the organ to the piano. Cornet technique is a bit different to the trumpet as its a small horn. There are very few really good cornet players who are also good trumpet players and visa versa. One of our local orchestras maintains a seperate cornet section for romantic period works for this reason.
I play both cornet and trumpet. Key and fingering are the same, but the technique isn't, and they are different size. But indeed, you can play trumpet if you play cornet and vice-versa. I think trumpet is more difficult.
@matters9319 - that's true in a physical sense of how the instruments are constructed.... but in reality there are very very few people who play both well.... psychologically there is a world of difference between the C & T....
With the trumpet, it's a slightly different tone than whe played with oboe. it's more... how to say.... deeper, ambitious... Moving in a different way.
I still prefer original oboe version -- it's sweeter and very moving, but this is inspiring too.
@gaelicband - I admire your conviction - however on this occasion you are wrong - it's definitely a cornet... nice piece, great arrangement, super playing....
It's a cornet, a flugel horn is much bigger, a g trumpet has a different shape, he plays to "high pitched" to play a bass trumpet, it's certainly not a not ha saxophone (haha) and it's not an e flat cornet cus an e flat cornet plays waay higher/hig pitched than this cornet. :)
I felt the playing was a bit reserved and not free enough

I'm not sure about using the cornet though...although it has warmer sound and is more lyrical, I think using a Bb trumpet would provide fuller sound, especially for that part 3/4 through when he reaches for the heavens
