I gotta say.. this kinda makes me want to play again, was so good back in the day. :) ..but also so many bad memories of trying to reclaim items from my broken body that i couldn't find and/or get to alive. :P
I played this game,,,way back in the day... And quite honestly...it truly was the BEST MMO out there...then and now...you just can not find the same type of game online.. Ah///fond memories... I remember calling the one place that had all the portals...the Subway..that was a HUGE bonus...as for getting around! Man... I really do miss this game... *sighs* I wonder if it is still possible to Power Level a toon?
@holysab7 Considering they claimed AC would shut down 7 years ago and every year since then (much like those end-of-the-world predictions for mankind), I'd think it's pretty safe to say the developers know what they are doing.
@holysab7 You will not regret atleast trying this game. Yes, it is not in it's prime... you might as well go play WoW if that's what you're looking for. But this is a great video that really maps out the pros of this mmo with its technological lacking. It's a pioneer of MMO's (and better than EverQuest imo) the community was unmatched, the gameplay was unmatched.. and I dare and MMO out there to match the fun I had when playing this game.
@Kep2k I liked it more than Everquest myself. ^^ but sooo hard just being dropped in the world alone with no map and no direction. :P I could never get passed the dropping items on death either, one time too many and that was the end of AC for me :P
@holysab7 I'll tell you, I used to play AC when it was first released, and after at least 8 years now, I'm starting to get back into it, and AC is still the best MMO out there... it's not going anywhere.
Thanks for reminding me why I used to love this game so much. To this day, this is still a standard reference when I try to explain what I find lacking in modern MMORPGs. Good video.
IDK how it is explainable, but somehow it looks this is mmorpg what i dreamed,i never played that game, perhaps even never saw this game, but first time i saw his game (2010) that game were looking very familiar for me,these stunning graphic looking very promissing for me,anyone knows similar games to this or know when this game goes f2p?
This was a great game when I played for several years. But it eventually got too outdated for me. I would love to see a reworking of it, but given their limited resources it seems this will never happen :(
It looks pretty much the way it did when I played it from 2000 - 2003. To this day, AC remains the standard by which I measure all other MMO's and sadly, this means most other MMO's are found wanting. AC was one of the big 3, AC, EQ, and UO, this was before modern day MMO's which are dumbed down in order to appear to a wider audience and earn more money. We need a modern day MMO like AC, skill based, PvP driven, no tunneling (god I hate how almost all new MMO's have tunneling), etc...
I've played UO, DAOC, WOW, WAR, GW, SWG, SB, and a bunch of trashy FTP, and I will say, without a shadow of a doubt, Asheron's Call is the best MMO I have ever played, ever. AC was made way ahead of its, time, these new cookie cutter MMO's are backwards and primitive compared to the genius of AC.
I played Asherson's Call for over 2 years at release and your video brought delightful nostalgia. Thanks for the throw back! Now just to find AC2 and Shadowbane vids and my quest for feeling old will be complete!
Creation seems sort of similar to the elderscrolls. I like the the idea that you can jump high and run fast.Although, graphically it does look a little like runescape. We all know runescape only compares to a pile of dirt. This game is definitely worth a shot. Thanks for the video.
AC is by far the best MMO I've ever played, and I've literally played other MMO's out there in the market. Having played this game when it first came out until I left after the end of the shadow war, no other game out there can compete.
It was truly revolutionary; the combat system, customization, social aspect...AC had it all.
Unfortunately, there aren't many players anymore but AC will always be #1 on my list... it's kidna like how other wow players miss vanilla/BC wow... AC is just like that!
Best MMO out there... awesome combat system, pvp system, just everything about it is so unique... it's sad that never hit main stream.... has so much potential. Then again maybe thats what kept it so great by not being so main stream and cookie cutter.

Some reasons why: Directional spellcasting, labyrinthine dungeons full of traps and dead-ends, miles and miles of free-roaming terrain, guild mansions, Player Killing with Death penalties!! Original monsters never imagined before, you can even cut their heads off and make it into a mask.
This game is Godmode. Ive played all kinds of games and I always think of this one. It brings back the best nostalgic memories and the community/Turbine functioned almost perfectly.
We should all remember that this game paved the way for the uninspired ultra-popular MMOs we have now.
Watching this reminds me of how much MMO's have moved away from being MMORPG. It's all about dps, healing, tanking, and gear nowadays, no real depth to any game. A good designed game, and good ideas, on this game.
This was the first MMO I ever played. I loved this game. I had like a level 100 Unarmed character before I left for Everquest. =( Lol I don't remember everything from this game but I remember stuff like the Matty coat (I think) those rare white robes and I remember the unkillable bunny.
AC was the pinnacle of MMO gaming to me. It sucks that WoW became so popular because they try to make every new MMO just like WoW and I hate it. I don't think I'll ever have as much fun in a video game as I did in AC. I've tried so many MMO's and all have just been cookie cutter WoW ripoffs.

@Fergulix there was some graphics updates, nothing really major. What you should come back for is the massive content thats been implemented in the last 10+ years
absolutely amazing. And I see that no one has mentioned to these trolls commenting here that they've introduced 3 new playable races and are coming with 4 more. I would have payed to get those races. I love this game so much, I feel like crying from nostalgia.
I fucking hate how ignorant people are. Asheron's Call is and always will be the greatest MMORPG created for PC. I grew up on AC, played when I was 5, and am now 16 and I still play on and off, in fact Im going to be renewing my old subscription soon. The pictures I've seen of the new textures look phenomenal compared to the old ones, the water looks-
@DesertSmeagle Players are not always stuck in the roles they play when they create a character. In AC its always a choice between versatility and focus. In many cases, certain situations can give certain characters an edge. Some character setups made by people are terrible solo but really shine in groups (IE: a specialized life casting character without war magic). Most of the time, what is "gimp" is really just a matter of opinion rather than fact.
This is like the game Wurm,(stuff to do wise) the graphics of everything but the NPCs/PCs are awesome looking, In the game, every new thing (houses, buildings, landscape, ect) is player made. In game, one day their would be a hill, next there would be a crater. You can fish, harvest food, plant, grow trees, cut wood, make planks, shafts, axles for carts, train animals to pull your cart, and more. Don't forget building houses, shops and more!
@arowara1 If you locate the Asheron's Call unofficial Wiki (youtube doesn't allow text links), check out the plugins link and scroll down to the "Minimap" plugin. That allows dungeon and interior walls to be visible in the radar. Its a great plugin that really should be incorporated into the game rather than requiring download.
You'd seriously rather take a game with amazing graphics and nothing at all to the game than one of the most original videogames ever created, where you're free to do basically as you wish?
That's... young, of you.
I miss AC, too.
Man, I remember playing AC from beta. I was a little kid then. Good stuff.
@booglegoog If ou were smarter than a 12 year old you would know that over time the creators of games realise that the graphics of the games suck compared to others and they "update" the graphics to their games. Since this game is still running and people still play it online and pay, i think the creaors need to consider it.
So stop be an arrogant idiot and stop calling people fuckers before you know what your talking about.
@BuhRanDoh The game is ran by Turbine. They have several, newer and greatly more populated games. So, naturally, they are focusing on those games, trying to make them better. They still update the game, not frequently mind you, but often enough. However, it costs money to upgrade graphics. And since the games community has diminished greatly over the years, they see no reason to update things like graphics. Its the basic mechanics of running an MMO company, update what appeals to most.
@booglegoog Actually you are very wrong... They update the game every month... that is more than most MMORPS can say... Mind you, these monthly updates cost nothing for the player.. and they have implemented over 100 updates during their 10 years on the market.
This game still rocks, despite the lack of graphics...
Man, this looks awesome. I tried the trial out, but unfortunately I get an error and after trying all the fixes posted on the official forums, I gave up.
@Boxsung Jesus, did you make the word? I don't think so. It's a video, if you don't like it, don't post anything negative, and if you are, don't make it about the narrator being a faggot.
combat macros ruined Asheron's Call, most people stopped playing the game and setup bots to play for them...I also think the developers were at fault making the XP cap too high which made people use bots to try to reach the cap
a real level 126 cap and xp cap around that range would have been good and they could have balanced the game for that range,
@elydawat DDO isn't a bad game, but it lacks a lot of features that I like to see in any game. Freedom of movement is the most important, your character feels slow and rigid in DDO and most other MMORPGs. Movement, timing and evasion is so critical in AC that it demands player skill rather than just your in-game character's skills.
@tndStudios Played AC many years back in the glory days and now am playing DDO. I loved AC but movement in DDO is not rigid at all. In fact it is more fluid as you do not have to lock in on an opponent to swing. DDO allows you to use movement to evade both missile and melee attacks.
@elydawat DDO is severely restricted compared to AC (funny that Turbine develops both). The reason I like DDO is because I'm a fan of the d20 system, however, it's undeniable that AC is infinitely superior than DDO in pretty much every other respect. Not to mention the massive and wide-spread dumbing down for the masses that has been implemented since going F2P.
We could only hope for the open-world, freedom of movement and immense array of skills and character customization than AC has.
I loved AC. The only problem , and that's why i don't play it anymore, is that it's rather empty now, and it isn't anymore what it was once, like in the 2 first years.
They should reset levels from everyone , forbidd combat macros, raise a bit patron/vassal pass-up again, not like it was once, to prevent xp-chains, but enough to passup to your patron's patron (so we can level our 2nd char at least ;) )
well i have played ac since 2000, and this youtube vid does not do any justice for the graphics, good vid tho, but if you havent played ac i reccomend you give it a try, it is 12.95 a month but worth it, if you cant pay 1 month youy just start playing when you can and all you toons and info is saved, so if you play enjoy.. i do
I played this game during it's first few years of life. 10 years after the fact and I feel it still hasn't been beaten, for the most part. (DAoC created a much much better pvp system imo, both amazing games though). Nothing beats typing and printing a Portal List and taping it beside the computer.
these groaphgics they suck but the gameplay looks GOD DAAMN AMAZING! this would be befect game isf they perked up graphics JUST a tad bit so i still looks old beacuse that gives u a odd but epic feeling about it
@ljohnson65737 Funny that you should mention that... If you click on the "oh, by the way" sticky post in the game's main forums, you'll see a few screenshots of the big texture upgrades they're going to do for the landscape. Its just textures, but its a start.
@zeroblackcat1 To put it simply, you can do just as well through questing as you can through "grinding" now. The developers introduced a quest hub that basically guides you through the first 45 lvls that your character will earn, its a nice feature but its not mandatory. Find a good spot and grind away if you like, there are plenty of them and i'm sure asking a player in game would yield you some options. I don't have enough space to detail that here though.
Back in 1999 AC was the first MMORPG I ever played. It's still one of my favorites to this day. Although I don't play anymore I have so many good memories from AC. I wish newer games would take what was good about AC and incorporate it.
Its not about graphics its about gameplay. Back when Pac-Man came out did people complain about how it looked? NO. They just loved to play it. Back during the time when everyone played the NES did people care about graphics? NO. They just enjoyed the games. It wasnt until all this 16 bit and 64 bit and all this shit happened that people actually started to care and not until all these next gen systems came out did people care.
I totally agree with your point but I think using Pac-man and NES as examples is pretty off base. Both of those things were pretty much as good as it got in their day so there was no real comparison to be made when it came to GFX. All of their peers so to speak were pretty well on par with them. Bottom line is, back then people didn't care about what had better graphics because it all looked the same.
I do agree though ... game play is everything and graphics are secondary
LOL at lolerskates, sounds like an affected little bitch who gots his ass kicked in AC so much he had to quit. Or some dumb girl who has no idea how to pk. Go back to wow faggot like you guys dont have enough players or some shit.
The problem is all the fags that play WoW think the graphics make the game. This game is like twice as big as WoW... Plus it's less like a little kids game.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
nice concept but the graphics are so fucking horrible i can't even seriously picture myself playing this. Funny thing is that I got this like 5 years ago as a kid and its still sitting right downstairs and I have yet to play it, or even open the box.
@lollerskates1992 I used to play it when I was in like 5th or 6th grade and im in college now trust me its fun, but i quit when WoW came out and now im thinking about going back to asherons call its fun trust me!
That's a very nice video. AC was my first MMO and I played for 4+ years. It'll always have a big warm fuzzy place in my heart.
I'm really glad you pointed out how run/jump change the game. You'll never get an evade bug in AC, you'll just be rewarded for creativity! (I miss you, Mario dungeons!)
Personally I quit the game way back in 2000. It was a really cool game but it was sucking up too much of my time. I'm amazed to see its still going as it was never hugely popular to begin with.
AC is the best MMO of all time, none other can compare, i was a little young for this game (im 15) but my brother was an addict to this game, and when i finally started to get into it it was/is one of the b est games of all time.
I agree entirely with mikepalomino, if Turbine would rethink the subscription structure and maybe do a DDO-style rerelease of Asheron's Call with a free2play option, I think its userbase would skyrocket.
I miss AC like crazy; played it pretty consistently for about 5 years, from 99-04 or so. Really fantastic game. But going back to it now just isn't the same... It's a ghost town compared to what it was back in its hayday.
Yes. Every server (except for darktide) has "buff bots" where you can give them commands to benefit from their high level spells. They are not required of course but make leveling up convenient. The challenge is still there, you just fight harder monsters instead until you can get those enchantments yourself via items or own spells.
As for the number of players, across all servers there are about 1200 people still playing give or take... The majority residing in Frostfell and Darktide.
Excellent & informative video. I've always been curious about this MMO. Despite the now clunky graphics, it's very unorthodox character creation and its aversion to standard fantasy tropes (i.e. elves, goblins, fairies) remind me a lot of The Elder Scrolls: Morrowind.
My only reservation is that I find $13/mo too high for a game that is essentially ten years old at this point. I really wish Turbine would adjust their fees and/or business model for this game.
While I can agree with the price, I can at least say this: The value you get from that 13/mo is much higher than that for any other mmorpg simply because of the sheer amount of content available. That combined with the depth that this game has makes it worth the price of admission. Many people however favor eye candy over content, so its really a simple matter of preference.
I remember one time getting lost in a raining swamp and having to go find three corpses with a buddy of mine. And of course going to get the black fire stone for my Atlan sword! Those were the days man... thanks for bringing back the memories
Love love love AC! My biggest gripe is the hardcore grinding. Even when I loved the game the grinding was brutal. Has the grinding lessened these days?
Definitely. With all the time AC has had to develop, many different gameplay options are now available. Now you can do quests, kill tasks and hunt for trophies instead of grinding but for those 1337 p0\/\/3r gamers, you can still grind if it suits your fancy... personally I find that way, way too dull. Later, I plan on making a video that shows just what I'm talking about in regards to the many different ways to go about leveling.
A video would be great! Could the bulk of the video cover the leveling process by way of quests, kill tasks, and trophies? I don't remember those when I was playing. Do you know of any leveling guides that shows where to go, what to do, in an efficient way. That would be cool! :)
Oh one other thing I remember when I reactivated my account. I logged into Qalaba'r. I decided to hit my favorite dungeon Lugian Citadel. On the run there I noticed most of the mobs where in there 80s and higher. This was new. The mobs surrounding Qalaba'r used to be in the mid 30s (if memory serves). Has Turbine changed this?
Try the ac wiki site and look for the level guide link on the front page. Thats a good start for you, but it is a very, very incomplete list that leaves out a lot of other options. My video will be posted there once I get around to making it. As for the citadels you're right, they made the lugians stronger and sprinkled in some hollow wielding ones to make matters worse. On the upside, their loot profile is nice, especially if your hunting for metal-type salvages.
I gotta say.. this kinda makes me want to play again, was so good back in the day. :) ..but also so many bad memories of trying to reclaim items from my broken body that i couldn't find and/or get to alive. :P

The pictures I've seen of the new textures look phenomenal compared to the old ones, the water looks-

why wouldnt u want classes? then u end up with a shitty player
DesertSmeagle 1 year ago
@DesertSmeagle Players are not always stuck in the roles they play when they create a character. In AC its always a choice between versatility and focus. In many cases, certain situations can give certain characters an edge. Some character setups made by people are terrible solo but really shine in groups (IE: a specialized life casting character without war magic). Most of the time, what is "gimp" is really just a matter of opinion rather than fact.

@DesertSmeagle yeah if you're an idiot making the character... or you just dont how to reroll

Where can you get the radar Macro's?
arowara1 1 year ago
@arowara1 If you locate the Asheron's Call unofficial Wiki (youtube doesn't allow text links), check out the plugins link and scroll down to the "Minimap" plugin. That allows dungeon and interior walls to be visible in the radar. Its a great plugin that really should be incorporated into the game rather than requiring download.

@tndStudios you can send emails on this site with links. thx though

Seriously, bitch more.
Why do graphics matter so much to you?
You'd seriously rather take a game with amazing graphics and nothing at all to the game than one of the most original videogames ever created, where you're free to do basically as you wish?
That's... young, of you.
I miss AC, too.
Man, I remember playing AC from beta. I was a little kid then. Good stuff.

@BuhRanDoh if you were paying attention to the video, you would note that this game is over 10 years old. dont be a fucker
booglegoog 1 year ago
@booglegoog If ou were smarter than a 12 year old you would know that over time the creators of games realise that the graphics of the games suck compared to others and they "update" the graphics to their games. Since this game is still running and people still play it online and pay, i think the creaors need to consider it.
So stop be an arrogant idiot and stop calling people fuckers before you know what your talking about.
BuhRanDoh 1 year ago
@BuhRanDoh The game is ran by Turbine. They have several, newer and greatly more populated games. So, naturally, they are focusing on those games, trying to make them better. They still update the game, not frequently mind you, but often enough. However, it costs money to upgrade graphics. And since the games community has diminished greatly over the years, they see no reason to update things like graphics. Its the basic mechanics of running an MMO company, update what appeals to most.
booglegoog 1 year ago
@booglegoog Actually you are very wrong... They update the game every month... that is more than most MMORPS can say... Mind you, these monthly updates cost nothing for the player.. and they have implemented over 100 updates during their 10 years on the market.
This game still rocks, despite the lack of graphics...

combat macros ruined Asheron's Call, most people stopped playing the game and setup bots to play for them...I also think the developers were at fault making the XP cap too high which made people use bots to try to reach the cap
a real level 126 cap and xp cap around that range would have been good and they could have balanced the game for that range,

you like this gameplay?
go play DDO.. its the same.. and even better!!! lot better
elydawat 1 year ago
@elydawat DDO isn't a bad game, but it lacks a lot of features that I like to see in any game. Freedom of movement is the most important, your character feels slow and rigid in DDO and most other MMORPGs. Movement, timing and evasion is so critical in AC that it demands player skill rather than just your in-game character's skills.
tndStudios 1 year ago 4
@tndStudios Played AC many years back in the glory days and now am playing DDO. I loved AC but movement in DDO is not rigid at all. In fact it is more fluid as you do not have to lock in on an opponent to swing. DDO allows you to use movement to evade both missile and melee attacks.
Quickgrif 10 months ago
@elydawat DDO is severely restricted compared to AC (funny that Turbine develops both). The reason I like DDO is because I'm a fan of the d20 system, however, it's undeniable that AC is infinitely superior than DDO in pretty much every other respect. Not to mention the massive and wide-spread dumbing down for the masses that has been implemented since going F2P.
We could only hope for the open-world, freedom of movement and immense array of skills and character customization than AC has.
t00rdbucket 1 year ago
Well done !!
I loved AC. The only problem , and that's why i don't play it anymore, is that it's rather empty now, and it isn't anymore what it was once, like in the 2 first years.
They should reset levels from everyone , forbidd combat macros, raise a bit patron/vassal pass-up again, not like it was once, to prevent xp-chains, but enough to passup to your patron's patron (so we can level our 2nd char at least ;) )

ok thats it you have convinced me, i have resubbed to AC.
jackpipsam 1 year ago
@zeroblackcat1 To put it simply, you can do just as well through questing as you can through "grinding" now. The developers introduced a quest hub that basically guides you through the first 45 lvls that your character will earn, its a nice feature but its not mandatory. Find a good spot and grind away if you like, there are plenty of them and i'm sure asking a player in game would yield you some options. I don't have enough space to detail that here though.

GamaGaming 1 year ago 8
Well said, GamaGaming. :]
MalusProductions 1 year ago
I totally agree with your point but I think using Pac-man and NES as examples is pretty off base. Both of those things were pretty much as good as it got in their day so there was no real comparison to be made when it came to GFX. All of their peers so to speak were pretty well on par with them. Bottom line is, back then people didn't care about what had better graphics because it all looked the same.
I do agree though ... game play is everything and graphics are secondary

Personally I quit the game way back in 2000. It was a really cool game but it was sucking up too much of my time. I'm amazed to see its still going as it was never hugely popular to begin with.

It's a ghost town compared to what it was back in its hayday.
oglebug 2 years ago

Oh well... = /
mikepalomino 2 years ago
While I can agree with the price, I can at least say this: The value you get from that 13/mo is much higher than that for any other mmorpg simply because of the sheer amount of content available. That combined with the depth that this game has makes it worth the price of admission. Many people however favor eye candy over content, so its really a simple matter of preference.

Love love love AC! My biggest gripe is the hardcore grinding. Even when I loved the game the grinding was brutal. Has the grinding lessened these days?
kxmode 2 years ago
Definitely. With all the time AC has had to develop, many different gameplay options are now available. Now you can do quests, kill tasks and hunt for trophies instead of grinding but for those 1337 p0\/\/3r gamers, you can still grind if it suits your fancy... personally I find that way, way too dull. Later, I plan on making a video that shows just what I'm talking about in regards to the many different ways to go about leveling.
tndStudios 2 years ago
A video would be great! Could the bulk of the video cover the leveling process by way of quests, kill tasks, and trophies? I don't remember those when I was playing. Do you know of any leveling guides that shows where to go, what to do, in an efficient way. That would be cool! :)
kxmode 2 years ago
Oh one other thing I remember when I reactivated my account. I logged into Qalaba'r. I decided to hit my favorite dungeon Lugian Citadel. On the run there I noticed most of the mobs where in there 80s and higher. This was new. The mobs surrounding Qalaba'r used to be in the mid 30s (if memory serves). Has Turbine changed this?
kxmode 2 years ago
Try the ac wiki site and look for the level guide link on the front page. Thats a good start for you, but it is a very, very incomplete list that leaves out a lot of other options. My video will be posted there once I get around to making it. As for the citadels you're right, they made the lugians stronger and sprinkled in some hollow wielding ones to make matters worse. On the upside, their loot profile is nice, especially if your hunting for metal-type salvages.
