You also failed to mention relative sea level rise from climate change, which will affect louisiana before it affects other states in the US. we're sinking, and the sea is rising.
not so much in orleans parish, not so much in Plaquemines, but in Barataria and Terrebone parishes.
Orleans and st bernard are hurt by the MRGO, and plaquemines for all of these reasons, but the role of oil and gas is consistently downplayed in the loss of louisiana.
Even the phrase "Coastal Erosion" is a misnomer, because only a quarter of the land lost is on the "Coastline."
as someone who works giving LA wetlands loss tours to volunteers, i like this. I would add that most wetlands loss is not on the "Coastline" and is not "Coastal Erosion"; but is lost from the interior--60%+ is interior subsidence due to Hydrologic modification, mostly from oil and gas canals.
Wow this was an eye opening video. Just to think of the destruction this is causing on the ecosystems there along with the coastline vanishing makes my stomach sick. Thanks for making this video.
Anyone interested in coastal restoration efforts should get involved with America's WETLAND: Campaign to Save Coastal Louisiana. The foundation works to raise public awareness of the impact Louisiana's wetland loss has on the state, nation and world and to gain support for efforts to conserve and save coastal Lousiana. Check out the video "Washing Away."
Our agenda is transparent and, like most environmental initiatives, appreciates the private support to build awareness but is not driven by funders. The America's WETLAND Foundation is guided by an independent board with environmental and conservation credentials dedicated to raising public awareness of the impact of Louisiana's wetland loss on the state, nation and world.
Please visit the AWF website for a list of our cooperating organizations.
That may well be the case, but Shell is a major sponsor. In my opinion it is all for Shell to do some green-washing. If Shell really have a hoot they would help fix the coast they broke!
THANK YOU THAT WAS BRILLIANT - fURTHER MORE i AM SO SORRY TO HEAR THIS I am very touch by your courage and ability to cotinue your fight for what you believe in - My grandfather [Stephen Canpbell] fought and won the fight both for his people and there lands - Keep up the great work ....
...I would like to ask you to not talk about your country as "America" anymore. Since I am Brazilian, I am also part of America, and don't feel part of the United States.
You may not be aware, but you anger us, Latin-Americans, when you take the whole continent as your country. So, please do not do it again. To sum up, "America" is our continent, not only your country. Please find another name to refer to your nation.
great job on this video. Yes, we must accomplish what the netherlands accomplished in the 1950's . Are we a bit behind in the U.S? Yes ! This project must be funded and this city protected. Sacramento, Ca is next.
Sandy, very misleading information. I'm sure you don't have a degree in climatology, geology, or wetlands ecology but probably a political science degree. Halliburton (I'm sure the street sign was a coincidence) and the fishermen are causing everything. Perhaps a town like Burris or Venice should not exist (maybe flood every year w/no levee. Your theory says these towns shouldn't exist. Yes, wetlands are being lost. What should be do? Lanterns and horse & buggies might be quaint. Obama = hope.
I have a degree in biology and have studied Louisiana wetlands for about 8 years now and there is absolutely nothing misleading about this information. Every statistic regarding wetland loss stated in this film is completely scientifically accurate. If you like to drive your car, you need to help save LA Wetlands b/c a HUGE percent of the oil and gas industry is based in South Louisiana.
Sandy, thank you for making this video. I was born and raised in Venice. That was my post office. Since Katrina, I now live near Dallas. After going through hurricanes all my life I just couldn't live there anylonger. It will always be home.
Thanks again. Maybe, through your video, attention will finally be given to the needs of the coastline.

Look up "Process Classification of Coastal Land Loss" published by USGS in 1990.

America's Wetlands is a Shell Oil Shame.
Support real groups like LPBF, GRN, Sierra Club, CRCL and the like.
