One question! During the coronation of George VI when was this march played? At what point of the ceremony? Or is it merely a march composed for the occasion but never performed during the coronation? Who knows?
You can hear how John Williams was influenced by this composer. You can hear a little bit of both the Star Wars and Superman themes in this wonderful piece.
love this piece! very regal and occasionally bombastic! i admire the british and love britain's history, and think that US and england should've been allies from the start. but as always, colonization threatened that, and both countries being allies would come later. i may be american but i march to this sort of stirring music all the time, as well as with the good ol' US marches!
@classical38 i agree totally with you. Britain's alliance with the US is natural, and as it should be ( though we differ in many ways ). I can never understand those who say that our ties are more with europe than America. We should foster both, but I can honestly say that I would far rather put my faith in the US than 28 european contries who seem unable to put 2+2 together! Hail Walton....Hail Sousa :)
Long Live the Queen! Long live Brittania! Long live the Commonwealth!
youths today dont realize how much our monarchs have done to say our country from nepotistic europeans!
from King William, to King Richard, to King Henry VIII, to Queen Elizabeth I, to King Charles II, to Queen Victoria, to King George, to Queen Elizabeth II!
Check William Walton's wikipedia entry--it reads like a Jane Austen novel--so, so British. I was lunging for the tea and watercress sandwiches. A round of 55 degree (cellar temperature) Greene King IPA ale for everyone! Thanks for the post.
They played this as the final march during my high school graduation. I felt awesome while watching the Royal Wedding, and I could say "HA WILLIAM AND KATE, I USED THE SONG BEFORE YOU!!!!"
I tried to play this at my middle school a few months ago. It was such a good piece but the other orchestrians were SO lazy to learn it( and they were good enough to play it)...grrr....I think we could've won the orchestra competition with this song!
If you're a band/orchestra hearing this, you should totally have your band or orchestra play this piece! It's fun! I didn't get a chance to perform this song :(
oh and the first 10 seconds would make a decent star wars theme song XD
@facialnoob Isn't 4:16 where the king gets the crown placed on his head, then the orchestra plays a happy theme to match the excitement from the crowd?
Why does every recording I have heard so far pause at 4:16, and go super fast? It should slow down, and then move straight into the c major second theme! Arghh! It's not epic otherwise!
Nice but I don't get the image....how does it relate to the music...shouldn' t there be a painting of British infantry like storming Khartoum or somethig?
This was a great piece of music for the Duke & Duchess to exit to, it has a sort of 'tada, look!' feel to it as though something's been accomplished to be proud of. And we were all proud as we watched them! =)
I was up all night so as not to miss a thing, and it did not disappoint. This music added to a true Cinderella story! Thank you for sharing this moment and this majestic music with all of us. In these sad times, so full of death and destruction, I thank God for these moments which give us hope. Long live the happy couple and may their compassion guide others so we can once again live in harmony and the awe which this music inspires.
@MrWingedDeath I'll give it a couple of years at most before William's photographed by a paper with his trousers down in the stable with the scullery maid.
And they certainly did, in grand style too, it was just when they came out from the church shrine that this was played, perfect timing, the Crown Imperial is a wonderful piece and William and Katherine really went well with it :)
Can you name the orchestra and conductor please? (If it's on the text at the top of the page, I'm afraid that doesn't display in my browser)
