  • Rachel- It is somewhat unusual to have such signficant swelling with a stress fracutre. MRI imaging can be a useful tool to determine if you have multiple stress fractures. Immobilization in a cast boot should improve your swelling after a short period of time if it is truly a stress fracture. Best wishes.

  • Thank you for the video! After 2 weeks of spontaneous swelling to the entire top of my foot, mainly from the second metatarsal to the fifth and minor pain I was diagnosed with a stress fx with no X-ray findings (taken 3 days after swelling began). I have no difficulty moving my toes, but wonder why I have pain to the top of 4 metatarsals and over my extensor tendons, especially at the top of my ankle. I have difficulty pointing my foot without tightness and pain. Should I be concerned somethin

  • I had a stress facture before 2 months at the first and fifth metatarsal.I still cant walk normally and sometimes i dont feel my fingers. What i can do at home? Water exercises will help? A response from you would be great.

  • @thealexpap18 : Thanks for your message. I am concerned about your first metatarsal stress fracture diagnosis. I have never seen a stress fracture of the first metatarsal so I would recommend that you discuss this with your treating physician. Also, stress fractures of the fifth metatarsal are typically "Jones fracture" which can be difficult to treat and heal. Please check with your pyhsician as to normal treatment protocols for this injury. regards.

  • Hello! So i had a stress facture before 2 months and i still cant work normally and i cant fell my fingers very much. What i can do at home so it can improve? Water exersises help?(fracture was at 1st and fifth metatarsal) Thx! great video.A response from you would be great.!

  • I was on an exercise program before I got a stress fracture are there any exercises I can do in the next 2 months that are ok to do while wearing the boot ?

  • @Zahra4President : Don't let the stress fracture stop your exercise program: You can get on a stationary bike and cycle with the boot on. Sometimes you can swim based on the type of fracture. You can definately do core exercises to maintain strength. You should check with your physician because an uncomplicated stress fracture should allow you to advance into your shoes around four weeks. This will allow you to get onto a stationary bike and pedal with your shoe on much earlier.

  • @SanLuisPodiatry Thankyou for replying back I will try and I am actually wearing the boot you had in your video but its hard to use the stationary bike with it on can I take the boot off just while Im on the bike ?

  • @Zahra4President Check with your physician but sometimes you can slip a shoe on and place the pedal in the middle of the foot and pedal at a high intensity ( high RPM) and low gearing.

  • I have a high and a medium boot. The high is up to my knee and the low is about 4 inches above my ankle. Which should I use?

  • @nickdrewdustin85 Either the high or low cast boot should be sufficent for treating your fracture. Best of health.

  • Thanks for this response.

  • This is a great video and a brilliant example of the high-quality of free information people can find on the internet today.

    Thank you for making this.

  • I think I have stress fracture but I have a really big tennis tournament coming up and it's very important to me, this pain has been going on for about 3 weeks and when I start to play it doesn't hurt, only after. Do you have any suggestions?

  • Remember that the pain associated with stress fractures ususally start slowly and progressively get worse if not treated. If you are able to play without pain it suggests that your injury is relatively early. Check for swelling on the top of your foot. If you are planning on pursuing your upcoming match you should begin resting your foot now and limit your practice time. I would highly recommend that you seek professional medical advice so that you dont cut your season short

  • Please feel free to obtain information on my website by google search in San Luis Obispo and podiatry. A CAM boot can be purchased on the internet. I would highly recommend this as a form of treatment. 4 weeks is typical for healing a stress fracture. For X-Country make sure you are in the pool (deep end) with high intensity aqua jogging. Remember no barefoot walking. Advice has to be cautioned by the fact that i am not seeing you as a patient. Make sure you follow up with our current physician

  • the sooner my foot heals the better. I try not to walk around a lot though that sometimes is unavoidable and occaionsally my foot hurts. I have stopped running for 2 weeks as the pain first began though I am worried that because I don't have a boot it will take much longer for my foot to heal. I was hoping to get a second opinion from you. Thank you.

  • Hi, I was diagnosed with a stress fracture a week ago in my third left metatarsal. Though, I am only using a post-op foot. My doctor told me I don't need to wear it in the house. Though after watching your video I am concerned. I am on my varsity cross country team and with the season coming up soon I need to be training as soon as possible. Though I don't want to jeapordize my future health and running career by not letting my stress fracture heal properly. nevertheless, the sooner my foot hea

  • Hi there.. to San Luis Podiatry.. thank you very much for your info sent to me in November.. I am sorry for delay in replying to you. I have since been having physio and ultra sound and have been referred to a podiatrist in my local area.. inserts for the shoes etc.. finding it very hard though to walk in them for very long.. my feet keep cramping but been told to wear them for only 2-3 hours to begin with.. Thanks again!! Regards

  • @sunshinec54

Your orthotics might be uncomfortable for the first week but after a gradual break in they should feel comfortable. Let your podiatrist know if they are not feeling comfortable after this gradual break in. Do you have a diagnosis at this point?

  • I have been to my GP about foot pain similar to this, although mine seems to be across the foot at the m/joints. He said it was crazed (crackled) and inflamed. I cannolt beat anyone to touch this area, as even slightest handling, results in the swelling returning and I have to go back to my regime of rest, ice and Voltarol emugel to settle it down again. It is getting me down to be honest, as this has been going on since May. My GP has referred me for physio which has taken months (live in UK)

  • @sunshinec54 Hi-Thanks for your input. If the pain is on the bottom of the foot at the metatrsal region than you could have capsulitis which is inflammation and pain to the second digit. If you goole search san luis obispo and podiatry you can find my website which has a interactive foot chart that might help you

  • @sunshinec54

I HOPE YOU ARE DOING WELL AT THIS POINT.

  • I forgot to mention that i have avoided running and have walked as little as possible for the past 7 weeks and i still have some pain.

  • @jazzfusionforall

If you search for sanluispodiatrygroup you can find the interactive foot and ankle chart

  • I started running in vibram five fingers over the summer, and i have had pain in my right foot. I had swelling almost identical to the video, but the pain seems lower either, in the joint or my second toe or around it, more on the bottom of the joint than the top of the foot. Could this still be a stress fracture?

  • @jazzfusionforall

Please take a look at the interactive foot and ankle chart on my website for additional information. It sounds like you might have capsulitis. Remember to consult a foot and ankle specialist in your area as need. Regards.

  • I have swelling exactly in that spot on my foot, and I have a lot of pain when walking and running, Im currently in football and we run several miles a day, I never got stepped on or anything like that, my foot just started to hurt one day and it keeps getting worse, the pain is almost unbearable without shoes on. The swelling is also VERY tender, could this be what I have? The pain has been going on for about 2 weeks now with no signs of getting better. Great Video

  • Most stress fractures to the metatarsal bones start without a specific injury like getting stepped on. It will be important for you to see a foot and ankle specialist in your area. The xrays that your podiatrist will take often times may not show the fracture line at two weeks. An MRI can always be performed which will help in the diagnosis if needed. Good luck and thanks for your comments

  • Yep. I'm going on week 4. X-rays clear. I was written off. Clearly this is what I have. Thank you. Going to try to find a good doctor now.

  • Great to hear that this video helped. Swelling to the forepart of the foot with pain worse as the day goes on is stress fracture until proven otherwise. I wish you well. cbyrne

  • Great video!

  • @tekscaninc

    Thanks for your response.
