For all of those bothered by the closing prayer I would offer this thought. You're not the only one. After an hour or so of Hitchens arguments I would bet that there were more than a few students who, quite possibly for the first time, were also disturbed by the applications of these superstitious shackles through repetitious groveling.
Before you have a second to reflect on discussion you must pray! Don't let that unfamiliar taste of free thought settle in, back to the Jesus-shackles kids.
Ha ha, it's a Christian Academy guys, of course they're going to finish up with a prayer! I'm sure Hitch thought it was an absolute bargain price to pay, to offer those kids a glimpse at what humanism and free thought actually look and sound like.
I think Dr Taylor would have been better served by not nailing his colours up in his discourse. The kids most likely to have been influenced by Hitch couldn't have missed how uneasy and unsettled Larry was...

do we really have to wait for someone to pray to his/her god, like he asks at the end? i mean they are welcome to pray to whom / whatever they want to, but i don't like it when they ask the rest of us to stop with what we are busy with and be quite, to show respect. they are welcome to pray at home with people willing to participate, but to do it in public (i realise they are in a church, but in general i mean), to put us in a situation where we will offend if we don't play with... i dont like.
Never have I seen such a demolishing. The prayer at the end was a last gasp of absolute desperation. What an embarrassing & crushing day for those who believe.
To Me, Hitch - and specifically this whole debate - has conclusively disproven God without doubt. It is the most beautiful eloquent end to his wonderful gift to humanity.
Let us move on. A philosopher Alain De Botton is about to release the next book for us to read. "Religion for Atheists" - basically saying that Religion isn't true, but let us take the best bits from it.
And the clip ends with a brainwashed fool praying to the cookie monster.
Religion is still here because a lot of people are afraid of death and they find comfort in the fairytale of eternal life - then why the F*** do they cry at funerals - they should clap their hands when their babies are born dead - they go straight to the big daddy in the sky.
Hate gays, a man in the sky, a virgin giving birth, a zombie-man saves us all, a snake that talks... Yeah that is reasonable to believe...
Did they really try to censor this? Good to know, I'm now downloading all parts of the video as I type and will re-upload it wherever possible if they take it off of youtube.
Htichens on Falujah: 'The death toll is not nearly high enough... too many have escaped'. What a hypocrite. He supports wars which kill hundreds of thousands and preaches morals. Nasty little man.
"But since 1978 I haven't been persuaded by the atheist world view, but I have been persuaded by the truth in god's word"
You just saw "God's word" tested for about an hour by the atheist world view, and you saw "God's word" utterly destroyed in every facet of every argument presented in an intellectually honest and mature manner.
What appeals to these people is them being down talked to, being praised for doing little. Emotion comes first over honesty and morality apparently...
Perhaps we're just in and oscillitory phase where it sometimes is DRIVIN out but then eventually comes back in. Or perhaps there's an acceleration to "something else". Either way, it puts a big "?" on the whole idea of the Big Bang. And that's what I like seeing!!!!
@ofinterest2007 As for the fate of the universe, all of the current data point toward the universe exhibiting "flat" geometry, which would mean that the expansion will go on forever. However, the problem with having the data point toward flat geometry is that you can't really tell if the universe is actually flat, or just really, really close to flat (the earth seems pretty flat if you don't try to go too far). The universe could also be closed (exp. stops, Big Crunch), or open (expands faster).
One of the best things I like about it is the discovery of Lawrence Krauss and that the universe is expanding at an accelerating speed. All the Big Bang theories are built on the idea that all energy in the universe comes from the Big Bang. IOW, as the the universe expands the expansion should be slowing down. But its not. Its actually getting faster. How do we answer for that?
Maybe we just haven't seen the pitch of the acceleration and therefor it is still getting faster. Maybe in 2, 3, 4, 5 - what-ever-billion years it will slow down?
The human mind is not able to grasp the size and structure of the universe. We don't even understand what is going on in most of our own galaxy - and there are billions of galaxies out there.
@ofinterest2007 Krauss didn't discover that the expansion of the universe is accelerating. Perlmutter, Riess, and Schmidt did.
If you're interested in learning more about the accelerating expansion/dark energy, physicist Sean Carroll wrote a blog post about it that you can find by Googling "dark energy cosmic variance."
I did a little research and found that you are correct about Perlmutter et al. My bad!
I had a DVD once with Lawrence Krauss and Richard Dawkins together where at least I thought they said Lawrence had won a Nobel Prize for the discovery, but apparently not. I don't have the DVD anymore to be able to check it out. The portable player it was left in was stolen.
@ofinterest2007 i know the feeling, i lost my ratm collection and a 1/4 of skunk in a cd case once. at the time i was pissed, now i dont indulge in either.
How some can listen to Lawrence Krauss and afterwards to a believer talking about a man in the sky, a talking snake, that you will be punished for not going into a special building on sundays and doing what he says, and be so narcissistic that they think the universe is made just for them - not ants, dogs, flies, other lifeforms in other galaxies, no only for them - and then choose to believe the believer, it is beyond me - and actually very sad.
One does not like to be disobliging to a fellow primate but if that guy had any idea how stupid he looked and sounded babbling incoherently with that prayer following Hitchens masterclass of a speech he would not have done it.
Christopher Hitchens, a great teacher, a great debater, a great human, a great friend to his friends, a great father who wont outlive his children. One of his close friends said "If Hitchens never existed we could not have possibly invented him." America and England are lucky to have had people like him to give to the world!

@ImGladImBrad hahah dude was like "oh, shit. were gonna lose all of our fucking enrollment after that massacre; i better spew some faith b.s. before they start thinking too much."
7:20 did Dembski say to Hitchens "Glad you're back"? Can't make it out clearly, but I assume from Hitchens' answer "Where was I before?". If so, and if it's associated with Hitchens' cancer, isn't that a bit of a sinister thing to say? Could anyone clarify what Dembski said?
@Juuustaaas When they shake hands I think Dembski says something like "You had a strong come-back at the end there". I think Hitch was teasing him a little with the "Where was I before?" as in, "You really think it was close until the final remarks?!". Dembski then keeps up the front, waves his hand a squeaks something about it being 50-50.
The finale by Hitch on the only conversation worth having is one of the most brilliant things I've ever heard. I wish my religious family were listening.
@hungryman211 True, BUT-this debate was hosted at the hands of the religious side. The awful prayer at the end in no way detracts from Christoper's eloquent expressions.
You have not been pursuaded, because you don't have a thinking mind!
Father, thank you for the ignorants, who fill my packets and allow me to speak in front of these many people, even that I am a moron and have an IQ of 35.....
How is it possible for Dr. Taylor to ever look at himself in the mirror after he spewed such vile nonsense from his mouth under the guise of a prayer. It's frightening howutterly disingenuous, pompous and pretentious his words hit me after Hitchens demonstrated such an overwhelming display of intelligence, integrity, and honesty. And yet, in spite of such devastation Dr. Taylor held fast to his faith. What horror. It’s truly one of the most frightening things I’ve ever seen.
It is a stunning example of the reality that we live amongst those who will never negotiate away from certain unfounded beliefs due to wishful thinking, delusion and fear. Willfully, perpetual children.
Thank you, Christopher. The seed of intellectual freedom you've planted in the minds of the indoctrinated youngsters of the audience will germinate long after your time but IT WILL GERMINATE.
I agree. I felt sad watching this knowing that Hitchens may soon die. He is, whether you agree with him or not, one of the best speakers and most passionate arguers the world has ever seen. I hope he is remembered long after he dies and long after I die.
In a curious way, although the closing prayer may well have been intended to reassure the faithful after what must have been an unnerving experience (listening to CH), I suspect that it might have sounded incredibly artificial and hollow to some people in that room in comparison. So ironically it may have aided in encouraging perhaps a few to really think about their beliefs.
The man at the end demonstrates the true ignorance of "sheep". He openly admitted that he could not understand most of the debate. However, he follows with saying that "since 1978 (he) has yet been persuaded by the the atheist world view. Why don't you read a book other than the bible and come to terms with what infinitesimal knowledge of the real world you posses.
Father thank you for confusing us by offering absolutely no proof of your existence. Thank you for confusing us by making your holy word a book full of total nonsense that appears to have been written by bronze age nomads who had no ability to understand their own environment.
The guy at the end is either a retard or lying, and I am thinking it's the latter. Because he says he dosen't know the answer and is "confused", BUT in his prayer he is willingly saying he knows the bible holds the truth. As sad as it may be, the religious do a good job at self-contradicting.
Note the very important psychological distinction between the two speakers here. One assumes a desire to meet with dead authors while the other implies that ideas hold far more importance than the personality that brought them into being. One assumes a desire for some fulfilling relationship with a responsible figure in authority while the other assumes that role himself. Subtle but I think, very telling.
HA! fantastic, what a fantastic human being! Dembski was unenlightening and forgettable. Hitch was AS ALWAYS, unerringly, both cutting, articulate, relevant and, beautifully poetic. People say the religious are the only ones with hope- Hitch gives us not only that, but also a sense of our own self-worth as human beings, a sense of independence- ultimately responsible for our own shortcomings AND our own virtues.
If you think that was good, review the 5 segments cut from his encounter with Marvin Olasky. Type "Hitchens vs religion" in the search field to find them. Rarely has his contempt of religion and totalitarianism been more cutting, and incisive, and inquiry, enlightenment, and discovery been more strenuously and passionately defended.
I feel confident that at least some of those students gave up their religion and went on to become productive individuals. If that is true, then Hitchens did his job. =)
I wish Hitch would drop the Pope Leo story. Even though I haven't been able to track the story down, if you know anthing about the RC and how it establishes dogma, it rings completely untrue. The RC Church has never established dogma on the back scientific discoveries. I also wish the RC Church or any other Christian denomination would throw a worthy adversary at Hitch. I'm positive they are out there, but it also seems like HItch is shooting fish in a barrel.
What the last preacher said .. "God you confuse us" What .. You said your god fucks with your mind .. Its like creationist saying .. "God put those fosils there to test our faith" . Damn you Elmer fudd.
I love how the end the guy wraps up by just basically saying, "I think I'm right, so that's that." Didn't provide any evidence reasoning to support his view, he's just saying that's how it is to cue the tards into clapping for him.
Thank you Christopher, for being an excellent example of what it is to be a human being. Someone who can look at the nonsense of religion and reject it as the fairy tale that it really is.
"Father thanks for letting us have a book that we can always go for answers, because lack of answers confuses and scares us. We hate thinking for ourselves. Amen"
Dembski is not one of the great thinkers and neither is this closing speaker. Christopher Hitchens deserves to be among the league of great thinkers.
Well, at least she didn't say it out loud. I would like nothing less than any resemblance between my own atheism and that terrifying and sadistic woman.
he speaks the truth, and doesnt care what others think.
and i love how he speaks out on the repression of women in the third world!
Bless him for be brave enough to speak out against popular opinion. I hope he beats the cancer! we need him around longer to keep passing him intellect and brilliant honesty to everyone!
@Torrriate The only one making the assertion of truth is Dr. Dembski. Hitchens was not making an assertion of truth, rather, he was denying Dembski's assertion through his articulate and intelligent arguments. You make the common mistake that Atheism is a religion in itself; it's the equivalent of saying that not playing football is a sport, or not having a job is being employed. Atheism is the lack of a belief for religion, not a religious belief in itself.
Please, don't impute this perspective on atheism to me. My perspective on it is different. I claim for two reasons that it's an act of faith, but of course it's not a religion. So don't put me there, please! And yes, Hitchens is articulate. But to be consequent, you could attribute the advantages of Hitchens argumentation (no assertion of truth, intelligent) to Dembski's argumentation as well - just to be objective. I'm a non believer, but I know, ultimatley we know little.
Poor kids... Glad to see they actually let Hitchens talk to them while they are being indoctrinated ... but to reinforce their slavery with the ending prayer really shows how people are. Conditioning is the modern religion and everyone is part of it. Look to nature to find your answers.
"Father thank you for being invisible, deaf, mute, incompetent, malicious, twisted, conflicted, megalomanaical, arbitrary, lazy, greedy, needy and above all, imaginary. I'd hate to think of a world in which you actually existed instead of just as an unfortunate dingleberry between the butt cheeks of humanity's gradual evolution. " -D77
lol wow it wasnt until the outro that i realized they exposed CHILDREN to hitchens! wonderful!
nothing could be more healthy to a child's mind undergoing religious indoctrination than a hitch-sized dose of evidence, reason, and cognitive dissonance
Lol this guy comes up to pray thinking: "crap Hichens closing line was a zinger... now these kids might want to actually think... I just gotta say "confusing" a lot and maybe I can get them to shut off thier brains again."
Well, I think "Doctor" Taylor's actions were the most insulting. If this debate, dumbed down for seventh graders, was confusing to him I hope he is not a physician. I would never like to think he is the person in charge of managing the health of someone important to me. What a shame he is in charge of children's education.
And when thou prayest, thow shalt not be as the HYPOCRITES are; for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men.
Some guy named Jesus apparently spoke these words -- according to some supposedly inerrant word of god in some gospel named Matthew chapter 6 verse 5.
Of course I'll have christians correcting me and telling me that "That is not what Jesus meant"--You see what he really meant to say was bla bla bla bla bla bla..
I wish all debates ended with someone talking about how they are not smart enough to understand what was said, and then talking to their imaginary friend about having coffee.
@MrCaveCanem Can you imagine sending your children to a school where some idiot prays about how confusing the world is and they don't understand it. If I were one of the parents and I heard this I would take my kids out of that that very day.
Ahhhhh.. the prayer.. *double-facepalm*...
Seriously, those Bible followers really ought to go with Matthew 6:5..

Scary indeed.

So ironically it may have aided in encouraging perhaps a few to really think about their beliefs.
alexleska 5 months ago
The man at the end demonstrates the true ignorance of "sheep". He openly admitted that he could not understand most of the debate. However, he follows with saying that "since 1978 (he) has yet been persuaded by the the atheist world view. Why don't you read a book other than the bible and come to terms with what infinitesimal knowledge of the real world you posses.

Hitch- 'Where was I before?'
HA! fantastic, what a fantastic human being!

Two idiots shouting at each other:"You're an idiot". "No, you're an idiot!". What arrogance to claim to be closer to "the truth".
Torrriate 7 months ago
@Torrriate The only one making the assertion of truth is Dr. Dembski. Hitchens was not making an assertion of truth, rather, he was denying Dembski's assertion through his articulate and intelligent arguments. You make the common mistake that Atheism is a religion in itself; it's the equivalent of saying that not playing football is a sport, or not having a job is being employed. Atheism is the lack of a belief for religion, not a religious belief in itself.
Delision 7 months ago
@Delision

Well, I think "Doctor" Taylor's actions were the most insulting. If this debate, dumbed down for seventh graders, was confusing to him I hope he is not a physician.
