@d0dge25 You just made me dribble. Here's me still using a vanilla a1200 hooked to a CM8833Mk2 Monitor. Really interested in the Amiga because its my most reliable machine. Would love to pimp it though. Getting into making XBox 360 games, and the screenmodes are very high. Still, Deluxe Paint 4 has enough features to keep me using it for smaller objects that I can later manipulate in Photoshop and GIMP. When I get the money, it'll get pimped
@d0dge25 Yeah, I noticed that. Its a realshame. Still, if I do manage to get one then it'll feel extra special due to the rarity... that is until it stops working (sobs)
@airfoobar While that is true (about the patent issue), there was plenty of BAD management at Commodore, and I think that it was more damaging overall then the CD32 issue. When you think about, there were virtually no upgrades from CBM on the Amiga from 1985 (Amiga 100 release) to 1992. In 7 years, they finally upgrade the graphics to AGA, and release the 1200 with a 68020 at twice the speed? In 7 years, that's the upgrade?
Contrary to popular belief, it wasn't mismanagement that killed the Amiga.
A patent troll got an injunction preventing them from selling the CD32 in the USA and sued them for several million dollars... for using XOR to blink the cursor (!). Since they couldn't sell their products and couldn't couldn't pay off the troll, they went bankrupt.
In other words, intellectual property and specifically software patents killed the Amiga :(
By far the most impressive thing i've seen the amiga do. It's a shame that the people running the commodore show didn't just build the 1200 with this capability as standard. Then when the pc started showing off the likes of doom, tie fighter and a little later quake the amiga would have easily been able to compete with the new generation of fps and other 3d stuff. My 1200 has been in the loft for years. I might dig it out one day, get an accelerator for it and try alien breed 3d 2 as i never did
@becomingzero Commodore's managemnt was busy during the early 90's trying to prove themselves some of the largets gits in the PC industry.
It's a wonder the A1200 made it to market at all. By the time it arrived, the it had been delayed significantly and already technically behind by the IBM PC & compatibles. Commodore went bankrupt a year after releasing it. Sadly.
Mate Commodore's managers were bloody stupid even at the time of the C64 launch. Who thought having so many almost identical, almost completely INCOMPATIBLE machines ever?
Don't get me started on the STUPID projects they did (C64GS anyone?) while all the good ideas were cancelled (A3000+, we hardly knew ye).
And the marketing! My god, put Commodore management in charge of KFC and you'd see adverts for "Dead warm bird"...
@becomingzero I did this, and I design graphics for a living. Digging out Deluxe Paint 4 again has saved me hours and hours! Its just so awesome to use! Why EA don't release a decent PC version, I don't know. Maybe they have and I don't know it. Still, the Amiga is my most reliable machine. Largely due I think because I use the PCs for my clutter, and the Amiga for specific tasks. I'd definitely recommend that you dig it out again. I love em
:O OMFG ARE YOU KIDDING ME!?!?!?! THAT WAS FREAKIN AWESOME!! THATS BETTER THAN PS1 GRAPHICS! OH MY F#*KING GOD!! why did the Amiga have to die :( I must buy one on eBay!
Masterpiece work by Ephidrena. It is the first Amiga AGA demo to use normal mapping & environment bump mapping on the Amiga. Has 512 x 512 texture map sizes. It seems to do all of this at a very good speed. A lot of optimising going on here. LoadError started on a final version from scratch, it still has not been released.
What hardware is this demo running on?
nicholasthetaylor 1 year ago
@nicholasthetaylor
A high end classic Amiga System.
That is, at least an A1200 with 68060 accelerator + 64MB FastRAM.
The demo supports gfx-boards, too. Yes, there are PCI expansion boards
out there on which you can run a Voodoo 4 for example.

@nicholasthetaylor ... then brace yourselfs for an expansive ride.
A Blizzard 1260 accelerator board never goes for less than 400 EUR at the online auction places.

What upgrades do you need for this? Would a 68030 at 40Mhz be enough, or?
richardmaudsley77 2 years ago
@richardmaudsley77
nope, 68060 at 50MHz plus a nice chunk of Fast RAM.

Beautiful work, but ... is that all really being realtime calculated on AGA hardware?
