This episode even though most of it is pictures it still grabs me with the tension especially when it showed the Daleks creating themselves and Lesterton running back in fear trying to prove of what he saw it still has that atmosphere and terror of a real Doctor Who episode!
A lot of missing material was transfered to film abroad, as the VT was not always compatible. So although rare, there is still a chance of recovering old episodes even now. Lets hope so.
It's a real pain in the ass that so many of the lost episodes are among the best. We lost Power of the Daleks and kept nonsense like The Keys of Marinus?
Well the Steven Moffet era might be great, let's hope so. But RTDs vision of Doctor has left me cold I'm afraid. It has fundamentally (and possibly irrevocably) changed the whole essence of the series - all hype, no delivery. Finding lost stories would at least give us old die hard fans of measured atmopheric storytelling something 'new' to get excited about.
This 'lost' Dalek adventure was the Daleks at their most awesome.By 1966 the BBC had young children(I was one)scuttling behind the sofa in sheer terror of being spotted by a dalek.
Yeah, the scene of all the Daleks in the room before the famous "Daleks conquer and destroy!" cliffhanger has a LOT of cardboard cutouts wobbling around in the back. (The army of Daleks coming through the door right after that is just the same four over and over and over...)
Well they didn't wobble because they didn't move and in the era of 405 line you could get away with flat photos as backdrops. I think that's inspired myself. I admire it.
It'd be great if the bbc would make recons of all the old episodes and release box sets of all the old seasons. it'd have to give the option of VO like this one or subtitles telling you what's happening. maybe it might happen on the 50th aniversary. or perhapse on the last episode of the last doctor (which might never happen)
They did actually reconstruct "Power" already. It's out as a CD-ROM. The next release ("The Highlanders") was cancelled though, because I don't think Power did as well as they thought it would.
Most of them weren't wiped by the bbc, they were wiped or recorded over when the film was sent to different tv stations over the world for broadcast. Back then they didn't exactly have copies of film. Some of them are simply lost in jumble sales, peoples attacks and what not.

Well I like Keys of Marinus myself, but I'd easily trade the entire new series for just one of these missing classics.

PDFandTRIPLEJ 4 years ago 8
personly I think the best one was the Invasion

Three way tie.
Power Of The Daleks, Invasion, Macra Terror. Okay, I'll throw Fury From The Deep in there too.

Good choices, add Web of Fear and you have four of the very best ever. Mostly missing sadly.

it would be good to mix photos with animation as they have done on invasion

Yes, but several stories were wiped by the BBC (Idiots) in the 60's, but the soundtracks survive.

Sorry I meant people's attics.

Then in what form do you think this story should exist, if at all? The original episode as it aired on TV is destroyed, so that's off the list.
