@SFNDMK Traditional martial arts practice forms and application of those forms, or at least are supposed to. They are about self defense. But this is sport sparring. I always say that Tae Kwon Do contradicts itself, I think it is true of ITF and WTF, but more with ITF. Proponents are so adament about it being so traditional, and the sine wave is so powerful. However, as we see with this display nothing traditional is present, therefore it is glorified kickboxing. Sine wave is impractical

@m4sabonim itf punches aren't to deal dmg... just punch straight (hence the pattern work) and restrict your opponents vision so you can properly line the kicks up.. and score some points

Except one hit from a guy of equal size and weight would hurt twice as bad, haha. I do Muay Thai (no, I won't hate on TKD), and there are girls who have been training longer than I have and are in excellent shape and have great technique yet won't generate the power to KO me for sure like a guy would, haha. It's called testosterone, and it results in greater muscle mass, agility and speed, explosiveness and power, as well as increased bone density, a deeper voice and a hairier body.
@m4sabonim You've got a good point, a lot of ITF schools don't focus enough on hands, however it does depend on the master and the individual student. I feel that in both federations there will be good people and bad people, it all depends on the individual. :)
@SpectralMessenger Really? I have trained both WTF and ITF (currently it's ITF) and in WTF they use their legs all the time, ITF is more hand-based, I'm not used to it so I always kick lol. ^^
@shinproful Sorry shin I didn't make myself very clear, I meant that a lot of school s tell you that you should use your hands, but they only teach you how to throw them out without proper technique. I've trained with both as well and I actually find my current master focuses on legs more than anyone else I've trained with (ITF). But i think that's just the way he is to be honest haha

I've fought in both and WTF HAS changed over the years..there used to be more body punches, but unless you could wind your opponent through the hogu...nobody bothered. points make prizes. WTF has turned into 'Full Contact Tag' which is irritating. ITF is supposed to be semi contact, but full contact is allowed to the body in most cases. Its generally the ITF fighters who adapt better to other styles involving a higher guard.

I'm an ITF black belt and I am guilty of sometimes getting on at the WTF, however this is mainly because of the sparring where I commonly see the hands being dropped and static movement. Sparring however is the sport side, it has nothing to do with defending yourself. Federations don't matter, it's all politics, if I see someone from the ITF doing something poorly, I'll pull them up on it as well.
The key thing for TKD is the artist and your own frame of mind. as my master says "Get it done"

@kakliza The whole ITF / WTF thing is just politics really, the koreans banished General Choi for trying to take TKD out into the world, then decided to make their own federation to combat his. I've always found the ITF sparring has a lot more movement, everyone tries to spend the whole round moving as much as possible and trying to do as much as possible. It all depends on the master and the student I think. Every club will be different. I'd love to be friends, you seem like a nice guy(or girl)

There is only TKD. WTF and ITF are petty political institutions which in the end should not have a final word on saying what is and what is not TKD, that should be the original kwans'/Kukkiwon responsibility. They must fuse as should Korea some day.

an the difference between itf and wtf is just the intensity. Wtf may be a bit faster because the fighters focus on getting the points faster than the other. a littl soft i think but still the possibility of a ko is still there cause kick are still allowed to the head.
i cant believe someone just said that tkd is not as effective in street fighting than some of the other martial arts. Tkd is super effective in the streets. in a split second one kick will knock your opponent out without having to first go strength to strength with your opponent and then taking him out. Tkd is a self defense martial arts and real masters teach you to avoid such conflicts in the first place.
TKD is a great martial art...many people seriously underestimate it and that is their weakness...most have no idea of it's destructive power..especially to someone who really understands it's method.

To be honest. True TKD is TKD. Whether it be of ITF or WTF descent. All came from the same things, just adapted. I'm a WTF fighter myself and I like it. ITF can be just as good.

O M G FAG! lol sorry for that offense to gay people. i am a WTF fighter, hand strikes are allowed, just discouraged becasue they wont score it unless you knock them through a wall with it. we use it to incapacitate and slow and injure an opponent without these pussy gloves.

rofl no ur the dumb ass cruqb this is itf tae kwon do, in other words they use punches and no sparing gear, its more of a bruteish type and wtf u use sparing gear and no feet pads, its more technical and tactical. myslef ive done both and a black belt in both and i personaly like wtf better, more planning and harder training

an the difference between itf and wtf is just the intensity. Wtf may be a bit faster because the fighters focus on getting the points faster than the other. a littl soft i think but still the possibility of a ko is still there cause kick are still allowed to the head.

i cant believe someone just said that tkd is not as effective in street fighting than some of the other martial arts. Tkd is super effective in the streets. in a split second one kick will knock your opponent out without having to first go strength to strength with your opponent and then taking him out. Tkd is a self defense martial arts and real masters teach you to avoid such conflicts in the first place.

ya but wouldnt you agree that there are a great deal of tkd/karate schools that just give away belts rather than making the students earn them. i mean i see little kids with fricken black belts in tkd and there is no way they deserve that. in judo you have to be 16 to have a black belt and that takes a great deal of time to get. then i got a friend who has been in tkd for 3 years and hes already a 2nd degree. idk most of it doesnt seem legit
