I'm sorry but these guys have no idea on 'Japanese' cutting. True, I found this video on their other site which spoke on, and critiqued European swords, but the two don't mix.
The two styles don't share the same cutting technique.
That's the sword I plan to buy. The only problem is the way you swing it. It's not an axe, or machete. Your wrong swing causes it to make so much noise.
I like the kaze katana, not only cuz it has a very beautiful hamon but also because of the way it is forged- it follows a more traditional method of construction. I know that the steel isnt quite as durable as a through hardened sword, but its strong enough, especially considering that I wouldnt use it for frequent cutting of hard targets anyway. I have always found it more convenient to cut softer things like pool noodles as theyre easier to come by and easier on a blade than rolled tatami...
Traditionally, swords of that kind are "differentially" hardened. This is in contrast to "through" hardened, used everywhere else
Char limit in mind, differential hardening is caused when you pack clay onto the back of the sword (not the cutting edge), heat, then quench and temper. The result is a softer spine and an edge that is harder. Performance wise, it's not as good as through hardened because it more easily bends. This is the traditional method, though, and some prefer it.
But keep in mind that the Kaze will keep its edge better than the Tenchi. I'f you arent going to be cutting anything that could be destructive to the blade i would recommend the Kaze.
But if you really want to be confident that you wont mess up you blade i would recommend the Tenchi.
well these are tatami mats rolled up around a bamboo core and soaked for a long time. when put on a stand and cut they will have the same resistance as human limb. since its forbidden to target human corpses or even prisoners anymore. they use it to prove the sharpness of the blade and its ability to give clean cuts and offcourse seeing if it can withstand the work withouth getting damaged
Tips on the best sword eh? Hmm, try googling 'Wootz Nano' and you'll see what may possibly be the best historical swords ever (made in a way that even with out current technology, we cannot replicate). And no, they ain't Katana..! ;-)

I ordered a Kaze Katana and mine arrived dull/blunt right out of the box, it wouldn't cut anything and Paul Chen from Cheness left me hanging with a lot of bullshit, but i never got a new sharp sword. You better save up your money and go for the real deal, Don't buy this chinese piece of shit!
hahaha i saw a PBS special on katanas once and how the differential hardening works on a molecular level to ensure the durability and sharpness of the blade...
it was sweet. they had demonstrations like this but with cutting bamboo, and this one professional had someone shoot a real arrow at him as a test and he cut it in half mid-flight. it was amazing.
I thought it might be a good idea for me to leave some constructive criticism. Forget everyone else, there is no "right" way to do anything, just recommended ways. My recommendation to both of you is to hold your left hand towards the bottom of the handle. Katanas are designed for a push/pull effect with your hands. Which allow you to rid yourself of unnecessary motion, and make you less tired. Hacking away at things is great with something along the lines of a Machete! but just have fun! ^^
lol good try guys, to all criticizing stfu their just having fun htey never stated that they thought they were good, therefore you shouldnt insult them for not being.
Never said I did... I've mentioned this before many times, and am tired of explaining myself - if you can't see the point of these videos, please don't waste your time watching them.
I review medieval swords, Katana, Ninja swords, Chinese swords, sabres, rapiers, etc - all from the point of view of a collector and casual cutter. My site helps folk with a similar interest - after all, the usual advise you get from experts in one area is 'save up $2,500+ and get a custom Sword after 20 years training...
I've recently started training in Hokushin Shinoh Ryu Iaido, but this is (as you can probably tell) AFTER the video was made - hence my 'backyard cutting form'. My site is dedicated to swords from all cultures, not just Japanese ones, but since my own interests are primarily Japanese (and medieval and Viking) swords I thought I'd better get some training in under my belt so that hopefully future vids will be a little less gung ho and a bit more precise. ;-)
I was about to say, your cutting style isn't necessarily "wrong", but just "unnecessary". Usually, the left arm is the power arm while the right is just a guiding arm. I can see that your form was less than "proper".
LOL NICE STUFF.. but u overdo ure cutsallot its bad to do in real situation(the opponent can see ure next strike)and please tell me where i can find some nice priced FULLY FUNCTINAL KATANAS...please
mykikowu if you are looking for a good low cost katana look for the warlord series katanas they are about $50.00 and very well made, and with a little home sharpening can cut through even the toughest targets. you can find them on ebay.

Tenchi. The steel is the same, but the heat-treatment is different.
