I'm new to all this, but have recently purchased a Cokin Grad ND filter. This has impressed me with the results it gives me, but want to take it further, especially on those bright, sunny days. Is it possible to use a Hoya 77mm ND8 screw in filter with my slide in square Cokin ND Grad? As you can tell be the size I'll be using it on a wide angle lens (10 - 22).
These videos are fantastic, very useful, and you've got a great presenting style Gordon. There are too many tips videos etc on YouTube where I can barely watch them as they are so grating!
Do you have a video regarding Neutral Density filters in the pipeline? They are my next purchase coming up, but need to save as they aren't cheap!
Shouldn't one be using a positive exposure compensation and simply shoot in RAW as opposed to jpeg so that the camera's white balance has no effect on the photos to begin with?
@SibSpi Shooting in RAW is a great idea as you suggest because it lets you easily adjust the WB after the event, along with giving you greater latitude for adjustments. But it introduces an extra element of complication for beginners, who these tips are aimed at. If you're comfortable shooting and processing RAW, then yes, I'd recommend it.
@cameralabs The EOS 500D we got came with a booklet explaining (in simple enough terms) what the different functions and features of the camera are, and I believe even went on to explain that, ignoring battery consumption and a quadrupling in size, shooting in RAW should be preferable from the get-go, since the included DPP software would make conversion quick and easy enough. Personally I can't think of on-camera JPEG processing as being good for anything but quicker file sharing.
@cameralabs Oh, not to mention the 'creative software' that also forms part of the EOS Utilities package. Those combined should still keep things very user friendly.
@WhiteBeltAcademy Yes tyou can change the white balance when recording a JPEG, but there's no easy way to change oit again afterwards if you got it wrong or want to try something else. Shooting in RAW lets you change the white balance easily afterwards. PS - regarding the other posts, thanks for supporting me, but I don't want the comments to descend into a slanging match here, so I may remove them later.
@cameralabs You are welcome. As for changing the white balance, my best suggestion for dealing with JPEG format, is to edit an image in layers and then saving it as .PSD if using photoshop. This way, you are then able to re-edit these pictures in the future without an issue.
@GeorgioSVK We have a different opinon about what consitutes humour. Insulting someone's looks on their public channel when they are providing information to you free of charge is not funny, it's rude.
@GeorgioSVK Smart ass? You're mistaken. You are on a public forum, this is between you and who ever else dislikes your comment. You don't like it? Send him your insults privately.

@cameralabs What affect does a polarizing filter have on water in images? And if shooting a long exposure during a sunset or something, would you need a longer exposure?
Quick question, I have stacked a Polarizing filter and another filter can't remember which it was and when I would snap a shot I would see almost like a border around the picture. Any idea why?
@cameralabs Hi, do you guys get a polarization refractors with an angular vector or do they all come as standard and are there any other types? Now how does one create a polarized filter or what is its structure, is it an angular, crystalline structure based refractor? From what i understand, which isn't much, is that they also change or direct and limit the electric and magnetic wave of the EM frequency of light at a perpendicular angle to each other. Thanks
Hi Gordan. I'm not quite sure whether to use Linear or Circular polarizing filter. Any suggestions for my Canon 24-105 and Canon 17-40 on a crop body please? Kind Regards.
Also great for superzooms with lens attachment. One comment though. It would be also great if a lot of compact zooms have lens attachments to fit various filters. It would give the compacts (Canon G12 excluded, as a kit is offered) more flexibilty in producing creative and corrective images, that are only reserved for superzooms and DSLRs. All in all, a very informative video presentation. Keep up the good work.
I have cir pol filter and I do take photos at night, do I need to take it of the lens or is it ok to leave it on? Just because I wonder if it makes the photos darker than they need to? Would you advice me to take cir pol filter off the lens for night shooting>???

Hello Gordon, I have learned many information and great ideas from you. When I come to youtube and need to learn some things about photography forsure I can find them from your channel. Obviously, contunie learning with others too. I appreciate for your generosity. Greeting from Canada. God bless you.
Gordon, I know you're a pro because you're great even on the details. For example, saying your speech at once without cutting every 3 seconds like most youtubers do.
Today 11/30/10 I bought a two set filters from a retailer store that starts with the letter W.I paid $20.00 for both of them. One of the filters is for ultraviolet and the other filter is for circular polarizer which was the one I used today for taking pics of ships and vessels. It really does work well on my olympus e520.Thanks for the video.
It was sunny one day and i was wearing dark brown sunglasses and they gave the clouds an amazing effect. Is there filters out there made of glass used in sunglasses?
@joewant : that's basically what a polarizing filter does too. Holding two polarized glasses from a pair of sunglass in front of each other and rotating them both in opposite directions of each other would dim your view through them.
A polarizing filter doesn't really work any different, allthough it doesn't filter out all the light, it only works on certain wavelengths of light (just as you have infra red filters that filter out all the normal light en let the infrared through to the sensor.)
@Rezaroth Great question! As you know, all polarisers have the side-effect of acting like ND filters, but they don't quote the actual figure. I think it's partly because the effect is variable. Either way, they don't sell ones which are deliberately darker than others.
@DontSpamHerePlz004 What's wrong with those settings? Did you expect me to only shoot in RAW and manual exposure modes? If so, remember these tutorials are aimed at complete beginners. That's why I use those settings.
@cameralabs ah yes, sure enough you very briefly mentioned it at the end for future tutorial to come (july 2008?). it is interesting any mention is missing from the website tutorial.

I just bought a DSLR camera and im just a beginner, watching ur videos made me confident and taught alot of things cuz i was kinda scared. Thank YOu for the best videos!
Cameralabs big fan here and thats why I'm coning to you for HELP. If you have some extra time mate I would really appreciate your opinion in purchasing some filters. I'm debating between two items. Question is which is the better choice? Please reply directly to this so it lets me know you've responded thanks again and keep up the great vids
It won't let me post the links directly so I'll msg them to you and let you know right now one is the Hoya 58mm Circular Polarizer Glass Filter for 35.55 and the Hoya 58mm 3-piece Filter Kit (includes a UV, CPL, 81A + Filter Wallet) for 54.95
Sorry, you tube would not show my post so would give me an error. So I had to assume it was not working. Many apologies, feel free to delete all those posts. Again I am very sorry and am very embarrassed.
@khellendrose There's no need to post the same questions again and again! Just go to dslrtips . com and read the tutorials which go with these videos - you'll see which models I'd recommend. Also feel free to ask in the filters section of the cameralabs . com forum.
What is a good brand filter? I currently have a circular polorizer filter by hanyo that cost about 50 dollars. How is the Hoya HD line? or would you recommend another brand?
One last question, what would be a good polarizing filter? I currently have I guess a basic circular polarizing filter from Hoya that cost about 50 dollars. Are the Hoya Hd filters any good? what would you recommend?
What is a good quality brand for polorizing filter? I have seen a lot of Hoya HD filter but am not sure as to what to look for in quality products for my Canon T1i. Again thank for all your videos, it has helped a lot in learning how to use my camera.
I want to say thanks for making this video, it helped a lot on understanding my new camera and the polarized filter. I just have one question, can or or should I use my UV filter with the circular polarizing filter? and if i can or should use both what one should be on the outside or closest to the camera lens.
All thanks to this video, I can now use my SLR more professionally. Its a Canon EOS 300. Although it may not be a digital SLR, it still has the features of a modern DSLR so, with this tips, I can practice my skills so when I get my very own DSLR quite soon, I can make full use of it from day one! Thanks for this video! I really appreciate it. Keep em' coming. :D xD!
I just purchased my first DSLR (after watching Cameralab's excellent Nikon D3000 video) and have very little photography experience, but this channel/Gordon Lang have been a VERY useful guide for beginners. (Especially in the often expensive world of photography).
Your videos really clarify the options for any beginner (especially when prioritizing accesories). Keep up the great work, I'd be lost in a pile of manuals/bills if this helpful channel didn't exist! Cheers
@10354046586 You're very welcome! Don't forget you can support me by shopping for anything at the partner stores page on cameralabs . com ! You'll find my full reviews there too - these videos are just the tip of the iceberg!
Great, great video. As others have suggested, you really should do a longer tutorial on general fotography using DSLRs. I have enjoyed your camera and lens reviews for a while now, and would LOVE to pay for a good how-to if you made one.
Thankyou! I may well do some more detailed guides in the future on a pay-per-view, or sale basis. In the meantime, don't forget to check out my websites dslrtips . com and cameralabs . com!
Hello!I have an Olympus E-520 and thinkin of buying a Polarizing filter for my 14-42 len which is on 58mm.But since i am a newb to photography i would love to have some suggestions from you on what filter to pick.
Interesting, always wondered how these dark blue skys were made. Too bad my kitlens is 58mm across and my 70-200 is 67mm across, now i need to think about which i need most. Or get for both lenses but the filters are expensive.
Gordon.....great tutorial as usual!.....love all our Brit cousins in the UK....wife and I were in London last year and fell in love with that town!.. London town is definitely a "class act!".. keep those wonderful tutorials coming!....
You should make like an 2 hour video tutorial on DSLR's and general photography. Then sell this video tutorial for $29.99, and I guarantee you that you would make a great profit from it. In fact I would be your first costumer, I seen many tutorials on how to do night photography and polarizing filers photos but you not only explain how to do it but you show how to do it on the camera which is amazing. So again, If I were you I would make a dvd and sell it. If you ever do it let me know
@EmiRSpAHiC1 I second that, I'm also interested in the outcome of this idea. Gordon explains things in an excellent manner and I would not hesitate to buy a guide narrated by him. Cheers
Hy Gordon! Please post more tips for DSLR's and shot&point cameras! You're tips are just great! I've seen alot of tips and reviews but you're tipsare the best! we want more! ! ! Thank's!
I have never managed to get an even exposure using a polarising filter on 5x4, using either 90mm or 150mm standard lens, this is without movement so cut-off aint the problem, seems the light isnt getting to the whole film because of how a polarising filter works, even tried white wall polaroid shots and still uneven, any idea's ???. I have been professional for about 14yrs so Im not a newby
Any tut that explains using polarising filters on 18-55mm AF lenses coming with all the latest cameras like Canon EOS600D and Nikon D5100?

what is the point of a UV filter?
giddione 1 year ago
@giddione On a DSLR there is no point, The low pass sensor is uv coated or something like that.

TMA5T3R 1 year ago
It won't let me post the links directly so I'll msg them to you and let you know right now one is the Hoya 58mm Circular Polarizer Glass Filter for 35.55 and the Hoya 58mm 3-piece Filter Kit (includes a UV, CPL, 81A + Filter Wallet) for 54.95
TMA5T3R 1 year ago
@TMA5T3R Hi, could you ask in the filer section of the cameralabs . com forum and one of us will try and help you there.

Sorry, you tube would not show my post so would give me an error. So I had to assume it was not working. Many apologies, feel free to delete all those posts. Again I am very sorry and am very embarrassed.

What brand filter would you recommend? Is the hanyo HD good?
khellendrose 1 year ago
@khellendrose There's no need to post the same questions again and again! Just go to dslrtips . com and read the tutorials which go with these videos - you'll see which models I'd recommend. Also feel free to ask in the filters section of the cameralabs . com forum.
cameralabs 1 year ago
What is a good brand filter? I currently have a circular polorizer filter by hanyo that cost about 50 dollars. How is the Hoya HD line? or would you recommend another brand?
khellendrose 1 year ago
One last question, what would be a good polarizing filter? I currently have I guess a basic circular polarizing filter from Hoya that cost about 50 dollars. Are the Hoya Hd filters any good? what would you recommend?
khellendrose 1 year ago
What is a good quality brand for polorizing filter? I have seen a lot of Hoya HD filter but am not sure as to what to look for in quality products for my Canon T1i. Again thank for all your videos, it has helped a lot in learning how to use my camera.

This guy is clear, concise and seems to speak from much experience.

I want to say thanks for making this video, it helped a lot on understanding my new camera and the polarized filter. I just have one question, can or or should I use my UV filter with the circular polarizing filter? and if i can or should use both what one should be on the outside or closest to the camera lens.
khellendrose 1 year ago
@khellendrose Only use one filter at a time for the best quality and to avoid vignetting (darkening in corners).

Your accent definitely gets my attention! Very sharp and straight-to-the point. Thanks!

In the meantime, don't forget to check out my websites dslrtips . com and cameralabs . com!

Labeled circle with a line through, like a no-entry sign.
I think that's a theta, am I right?
BTW, this vid is a great help. Will invest in a polarizing filter. Thanks.

Is it possible to fit both a diffuse and a uv filter to a lens at the same time?
Because my skylight filter recently cracked and now i need to buy a new filter. And i was thinking about getting a diffuse filter aswell.
So is it possible to have 2 filters on 1 lens?

Keldererik: research Stepping Up and Stepping Down Rings, they allow for different diametre lenses to use the same Filter.
HookedMasai 1 year ago
Interesting, always wondered how these dark blue skys were made. Too bad my kitlens is 58mm across and my 70-200 is 67mm across, now i need to think about which i need most. Or get for both lenses but the filters are expensive.

hey if im going to filming skating at night and during the day time with a still shot camera like a canon d40 or n70 what filters should i be using?
steezysloth 1 year ago
None, you want as much light to enter the camera so you can stop motion. You can use exp comp -1 or -2 to get color more deep or make a silhouette.

Gordon,
You should make like an 2 hour video tutorial on DSLR's and general photography.

Gordon is it practical to use two filters? Like combining uv and cpl filters?
unitaper 2 years ago
No, the more filters you use, the worse the quality gets - only use one at a time.

That was very informative...thanks
Although I've just bought a Linear polarizer not circular :(

It'll still work, it just might confuse your AF system, that's all. if so, switch to manual focus.
