  • Can anyone who was of music appreciation age in 81 tell me what it was like when this record hit?

  • I think it was Peter Stuyvesant menthols, if my memory serves me well! Smoking in the park....

  • green's got a divine touch of cloth,velvet-ish,essential british craftsman's tayloring, just adorable.

  • Gave my girlfriend this on tape. She smashed it into a thousand pieces. I left the girl, but still love this song. Those were the days...but this still sounds amazing.

  • " ... she left because she understood the value of defiance ... "

  • Brilliant - for me- peckham - crap flat - no furniture - horrible area - and then this !!!- best kick up the arse to get my act together

  • Bang tidy early Green - he has never made a bad track - I bow at the Strohmeyer altar xx

  • the rarest of things. A fantastic song that doesn't sound like anything else. Brilliant.

  • 1 person is a member of the sickest group in all the world.

  • Adoration of the "girl" as an objectification in popular music elides into a paen for political revolution. So, not just a love song?

Whatever, this is a beautiful song.

  • Superb.

  • with hindsight, rather good )

  • what a memory ..love flooding back

  • aww takes me back... sweet! :)

  • Very Smooooooth.... me likes.

  • I can imagine Bryan Ferry crooning out this song

  • I'll ask the same question I asked about A Little Knowledge: does anyone know of a video going with the song?

Madness is also an 80s band I love (not as much as Scritti, but a lot). Regardless, I do love their cover of Sweetest Girl, but it's not as good as the original. Both are great, but Madness was really goofy (which a big part of what drew us to them).

I credit them though for having respected the song and not massacred it in a big joke. Still, it's hard to compare: apples & oranges.

  • Is that an imitation of an International size Light Dunhill cigarette?

  • Madness version is a lot better.

  • One of the most unique songs I've ever heard.
