  • F.B. Fenby was actually the real first person to experiment however he died of injuries received from a working accident. Otherwise we would have had a phonograph 70 years earlier.

  • this some creepy shit

  • Amazing we are able to hear a voice recorded 152 years ago. There are no words to describe how surreal this is.

  • can we get an HD version?

  • I found that creepy and amazing at the same time o_o

  • 152 years later and we STILL haven't invented smellovision. :|

  • Your description is rather strange - if this was designed only to record sounds and not play them back, what was the purpose of recording them?

  • @RollaArtis "Record" has more than one reason. This device was intended to record the waveform on paper for scientific study. This modern realization, however is wrong. It is being played back at twice the correct speed and it is in fact the voice of De Martinville himself. If you check out the website firstsounds.o r g everything will be explained. Also it is not the first waveform recorded as examples survive from 1857. This uploader has not done his research.

  • @wks1978 I thought so, thanks for your most interesting reply. By scientific study I assume you mean visual not aural study.

  • @RollaArtis Yes, the device was called a "Phonautograph" and was intended to record sonic waveforms for visual study. These were only scanned and converted into audible sound recently with computer technology.

  • @wks1978 I see, almost like a piano roll recording.

  • HOLY Balls!!!!! This is scary ._.

  • It sounds like a bee.

  • Sounds like MaKenzie from Toddlers and Tiaras...

  • Man, that's scary!

  • True or not... that's f*cking CREEPY.

  • alien records

  • Omg this just scared the freakin dog shit out of me! WHAT IS THAT!!

  • @shesnailie Good one

  • I want a remastred version.

  • Put this up in 1080p.

  • Te dźwięki brzmią w moich uszach jak bełkoty kosmitów i myślę, że ta pieśń jest znana w całym Wszechświecie.

  • I'M SCARED

  • I love it, I find it so amazing I wish I had one

  • scary because it's 152 years ago

  • Im 19 and that freaked me out...cant sleep now :(

  • lady gaga

  • Play it backwards and you'd hear "go to church... say your prayers...". Needless to say it was a flop with the younger set.

  • I shit in my pants

  • it's kinda scary....

  • it's a GHOST! ._.

  • The last attempt by the French at anything.

  • That's creepy and demonic... Unless it's a baby cooing...

  • OMG its a ghasts LOL

  • It sounds like some bees are flying

  • thats fuckin scary

  • thats a bit scary

  • Damn I didnt know at&t was being used back then

  • This is not a voice of a woman, but it is of a man. It might have been the inventor of the machine itself.

  • Creepy :S

  • Keep in mind that this is not from a girl.

  • dude was giving an orgazzzm to his wife ;)

  • fuck

  • @sweetcommand0 I'd rather you blew me.

  • 151 years ago... Amazing.

  • Rebecca black's voice without autotune

  • Is the fat singer dead yet?

  • Pffh.. autotune ;) lol

  • yea! now I can make ghost videos by clicking the suggestions!

    Yea, again

  • Vsauce

  • Lmao

  • Dear listeners, according to a site i found, this example is sped up twice. So it sounds too high, chipmunk'd. The original speed version is sung by a male voice (possibly Scott de Martinville himself), it's a bit less audible and much less "creepy".

  • @MSBollWeevil

Do you know where to find the recording?

  • @0BleuFever0 Yes, check them out here: firstsounds . org / sounds / scott . php

  • thanks

  • Still better than Bieber.

  • @m2diggs

agree bieber could learn to sing from that lady

  • wooow it's real! She says: Au claire de la lune, mon ami Pierrot!

  • whoa that is really creepy

  • The comments here are par for the course for the collective low grade moron mentality of youtube posters.

  • what does it say when played backwards?

  • Look up innocent moon from Silent Hill

  • What is this? It sounds crazy and weird...

  • Am I the only one who thinks this sounds really creepy?

  • @jamielynnp24 no you are not it is very scary. It is like a horror film from Steven King

  • a multiverse where matter meets the internet and waves travel waves !?!

  • It sounded like a cat in heat.

  • if this is the very first recorded sound which include music why was they a recording of carl orff carmina o fortuna and requiem for a dream by clint mansell which was made in the 1500s if it wasn't recorded we wouldn't know that music exists to make updated versions of it which by the way hasn't been updated . that is the original piece you google on youtube

  • This is recorded with a spoon.

  • awesome

  • This is actually a man singing it, but the sound is playing too fast so it sounds higher.

  • That sounds exactly like Yoko Ono

  • It's not even scary o.O

  • its a fly

  • Is that the Titanic theme?

  • so creepy :o

  • It's a child singing the French song "Au Claire de la Lune". Cool!

  • @VTMCompany Yeah! Twas the first ever christmas No1!!!!!!

  • @VTMCompany yeeup #1 of the french pop charts for the week ending june 10 1860

  • thats fucking creepy

  • Shortly after this was released to the public, the researchers found they were playing this back at twice the speed.

It's actually the voice of Martinville himself, not a young girl.

google "first sounds" for an explanation

  • By far better than some of the microphones that some people use on xboxes :L

  • its not scary! im sure it sounded fine orginally but times passed so now it sounds like crap

  • @MegaStupidMagic holy crap.

  • @MegaStupidMagic

    then who was phone?

  • @MegaStupidMagic I'd be like "Wtf is that sound?"

  • @MegaStupidMagic You've made me laughing to tears!! :)

  • lol

sounds like a very angry zombie wasp trapped in a glass

    still it's better than dubstep

  • it's clair de lune, and it was recorded too fast.

  • 1860 - ..... No Technics, No Sony ( Samurai in Japan! ), Blaupunkt? ;) Philips? Grundig? ... ( Bismarck in Prussia ) No Muse ( in French Imperator Napoleon III ) ... Great sound ...

  • ah.. its justin fly.

  • So dark and gloomy, I like it :)

  • ... I wasn't going to sleep anyways.

  • scary...voice from beyond... it's just sounds like shit xD

  • @martinsbebop What would you expect a voice recorded with the "beginnings" technology to sound like great stereo? This is an historic recording and would hardly qualify as shit which was your comment.

  • @MrFBCBSALES i expect nothing, but i don't question the historic nature of this sound man, i just responds to other comments who say that creepy etc... everybody on youtube must be insulting or what?....

  • It sounded like fly

  • This is so f***ing impressive, I almost passed out hearing this...

  • The voice is running at a X2 speed, I am slowing it down.

  • @alanteam It is a little boy singing a lullaby in French.

  • so beautiful

  • I am obsessed with Firsts, like first picture, first video, first recording. So I find this so interesting. Also I find it weird to hear a dead man's voice. It's really macabre to me.. :P I don't know it just seems cool ..

  • This is possibly one of the most terrifying things I have heard. And I'm a Diamanda Galás fan.
