When your mind is empty ...you can stay ahead of your opponent. I think they call it Mushin or Samadi or even Zen. Emptying your mind allows you to move more intuitively and this is a great advantage. Good Aikidoist should be meditators.
This is amazing ive never actually seen Steven practicing Aikido but it really is a wonderful art but it takes someone very skillfull to pull it off for street fights. It does work, all the founder seems to have done is take out lethal moves and the stabbing/finishing part at the end. Normally throws which dont maim/kill end up with the samurai tanto in your ribs. For peace time a minor concussion is acceptable
The founder of Aikido Morihei Ueshiba Didn't intend for Aikido to be used for fighting but for peace. He was originally a Swordsman & practitioner of several old Jujutsu Ryu. IMHO, Aikido died with him as he could really make the techniques work due to his vast knowledge of Jujutsu and his fighting experience. Problem with Aikido now is that Practitioners think they can do what O-Sensei could do but without fighting for real against resisting opponents...Not!! there is no magic in fighting!
Aikido has come along way since ueshiba. Its better now than its ever been. Flaws are being ironed out all the time. Granted some detail has been lost but people as well as ironing out the flaws are rediscovering that lost detail thats the difference between making it work and it being as anti aikidoka like to call it a dance. As far as the real side with resistance goes its there its called toshu or tanto randori mate. Your both tori and neither wants to be thrown. Its not all coperation
Its called ukemi. In a fight you aren't going to flip. You're going to try to resist like a tough guy and that resistence is going to break your wrist.
about 15 yers ago I practice 3 years aikido under 4th Dan AIKIKAI Master in a dojo with several 1th and 2th dan hakamas, after that I found my way in JKD (the more extreme side oriented to real fighting and MMA) and took instructorship in the following ten years of practice... If you practice aikido as personal study and perfection method I don't doubt it's a great system, but I found it unusefull in fighting....
hi,even if ur iranian or anybody else doesnt matter, its how hard you train that counts, bruce lee said one day that all martial arts are efficient but it depends how you apply it .take care!
the only person that comes to mind that received such high ranking as 5th Dan that i can think of that deserved it would be Seagal. and or has the talent to back it up. but im not saying dyzina doesnt ,but i highly doubt it.
So people like Tomiki ,Shishida , yamada, shioda, Nariyama , uno, saito etc etc didnt desurve there grades no? Even though there level of skill is far beyond segals and no disrespect to segal he put the work in to get where he is. but its just a fact. You are having a laugh aint you?
Strenght is nothing compared to the power of the Mind, and when combined these 2 you have a strong ki which is the escence of aikido. This video shows it. Great thanks for posting
all these guys are tiny...there is no way he could toss up a boxer or heavyweight person like that...I am Iranian and this kind of fight is a joke. in Iran we just attack the eyes and it looks like his eyes are always unprotected.
He's almost 6'5" and about 250lbs there. But say what you want about it. It's a free world in CyberSpace. It works in real life. I get lots of practice.
Kevinatucia, There is no way you could get close to his eyes, you would be on the ground and not even see what hit you. I don't care how big you are. There are only a few people skilled enough to take ukemi from him.
size and strength dont mean a thing. In fact if you are useing muscle you are doing it wrong . Everything should be soft. The best aikido always happens when you are so tired you simply having got and muscle to put in. You cant cheat it then. A big man is week in all the same directions as a small man. Big or small its just energy to be harmonized with. As for attacking the eyes if he maintain correct distance you wont be able to reach them.
Participated in a seminar and learned a lot about Aikido. Saw him performing Randori and that was awesome - and believe me I have seen many good martial artists.
So Steven is a great martial artist!
And that is despite the fact, that he married the right wife to boost his black belt degrees (might have been love, though) and his acting abilities...
Traditional aikido is like a "dance" and uke doesn't show resistance against tori, that can't be aplicated to a real fight.seagals aikido is the only one that can be aplicated like a martial art in a real situation.
Just a note for those who think this is fake. I have a 5th degree black belt and a couple other 3rd degrees in various styles. Two styles I train are very similar to aikido. Yes, the guys in the video are relaxing and flowing with the techniques Steven Seagal is doing to them. However, this is because the moves can be devastating if they don't.
If you resist a move that is twisting your joints in directions they aren't supposed to go, they can and will be damaged severely. So, in a real situation the attacker might not look all pretty and fly through the air so fluidly, but they will be hurt depending on how much pain/damage the defender wants to inflict. One of the ultimate goals of aikido is harmony with nature and your attacker and to not do harm to your attacker.
These techniques were not developed to entertain people watching YouTube; they evolved over centuries as a way of defending against attacks that actually occurred. Necessity is the mother of all invention.
When a baseball team practices they take infield where the coach hits ground balls directly toward each player all in order and they field the ball and make the throw to first. In a game situation no one says to the batter "can you hit the ball directly to our shortstop so he can throw you out at first?" but in order to be prepared to make that play in the game, you have to go through a choreographed training. For them, it's "infield." For others, it's Aikido
I could go on for days with analogies (jazz musicians practicing scales to become better improvisers; student-teaching; anytime you ever see FAQs)For some reason training in pre-arranged hypotheticals in any other situation is acceptable to all these cats but in martial arts you better be able to fight a whole bar after your first class or it's all fake and useless.
Of course its unrealistic, how do you expect people to train? If i tried to punch my sensie with intent hed flatten me.I used tenchi nage once in a fight, albeit the guy didnt flip nice and pretty like in these demos, but he hit the deck very hard and didnt come back.
Someone attacks a bjj fighter with a knife = dead bjj fighter
In a comic manner, I'd love to see a pure BJJ fighter or some other expert MMA (combat sport) stylist try to fight off a guy with a sharp knife, what's he gonna do? Crouch down low and try to flying armbar the kinfe guy?
guy with sword attacks guy with knife = dead knife carrying hoodlum. guy with gun attacks guy with sword, no more swordsman. Guy with nuclear weapon of mass destruction attacks guy with gun, dead marksman..right?
so I guess for that matter, unless you're a member of the Fantastic 4 or something, you shouldn't even bother.
Let me tell you some thing mate i have been doing aikido for the past 8 years and hold a 1st dan i have been attacked before and used this to defend myself, granted it wasn't as clean etc and he did get nutted but the way i held myself and reacted had alot to do with aikido, in a REAL fight anything goes so there for all arts BAR thai boxing have limits!!!!!

RyuuKyuzo, You don't even need to waste your time with this Dyzina guy... he says he holds a 5th dan in aikido after only 10 years of training.. that alone proves he's nothing but lies.
To all those not totally convinced about the effectiveness of this art trust me you really have no clue do you. Ten years on the doors and twenty years on the mat and teaching the art for the last three, believe me oh disbelievers, IT WORKS. Ihave put myself through hell for the art and spent many hours soaking in hot baths to soothe my aching muscles and bones. I am kinda thinking that those who disbelieve really do not understand the sense or purpose of Budo.
If ya didnt notice they started out slow so it looks unrealizstic but when done in realtime, its very effective. Remember that these Aikido is from jujitsu which uses the same locks and pressure points as sometime like brazilian jujistsu. And yes this stuff works against a 250+ guy, Ive seen it. And no he was not a student.
The best martial arts actors don't exactly make the best movies. The better the martial artists the worst the acting abilities are. Its like a graph relly.
Its like the South Park scientology episode where Stan finds out he is a fucked up, angry, troubled soul after taking a "personality test". I guess if you feel you need "fixing" you are more likely to join up right?
Haha troubled soul indeed- Maybe I should join your cult-I have seen the light!. I am very angry at Steven because I think I may have suffered some internal damage through laughter last time I rented one of his films.
Are you angry at Steven Segal...or just angry. I believe that Aikido may have much to offer a troubled soul such as yourself. There is no greater force than the preservation of life. Just think happy thoughts...Mnnnnkayyyy? Seriously dude...you need to realize the power of "CHILL".
Aikido is fairly new, so of course it's going to have ties with other backgrounds. From what I read and based on other comments I've read Aikido is almost like another step in the process of becoming badass. Why ls would someone who has training in another form go over to a completly new form? Positive: Aikido is a higher form Negative it's easier to become badass then in other forms. Misspellings of mine are acknoledged.
1.Old man Ueshiba, fused some arts together, but decided his ego wasn't being stroked enough, so he created Aikultdo.
2. Aikultdo zombies pollute the MA world with their heady mix of zen psychological jargon and lacklusture techniques.
3. Aikultdo members were unloved by their mothers so spend all thier time trying to gain love through infecting the world with thier black skirted dance.
Seagal is a controversial "aikidoist". My Japanese jiu-jitsu teacher says Seagal has obviously studied traditonal jiu-jitsu not just aikido. Also, it is well known that he has studied kung fu (for the strikes) among other disciplines. In other words, he is filling the gaps in aikido (as pointed out below).
Aikido Is Ju Jitsu with the foot movements of Japanese Kendo- sword fighting and it use's very little effort and turns any agressor's power against themselves.
It is the most difficult martial arts to do well, because you have to understand and practice the art of KI to use it effectively or you can get yourself in trouble if you try to use it and it is all defense only. This is truly the masters martial art.
Segal would be considered an abusive, offensive, talentless man suffering from narcisistic personality disorder and psychosis in most respectable circles. No woman would marry him, no film director will employ him and no psychologist could help him. In Aikido circles, however he is considered a demi-god. I don;#'t get you Aikido people.
I only wish I had known how to work Aikido the way HE does whenever I was in middle school there was a man named Larry Lowe I wouldve used it on for being such a bully to me and others!
I hate bullies, I remember I knocked one of them out in college for kicking him in the neck and he fell on the ground landing on the curb of the road. I was expelled from that college. figures lol
wow, I was just thinking how completely egotistical Steven is. You should check out his wikipedia page, it goes in-depth into all of the horrible character flaws he has. The guy is a complete asshole, totally paranoid, has injured numerous stuntment while showing off, and abandoned his wife and kids in japan to go to hollywood.
Steaven seagal is an awsome martial artist. he is even in some movies. This footag is awsome. And i do aikido, some of those moves are very complicated thought they seem easy.
Simply awesome!!! Five stars!!! Amount most Japanese MAs, Aikido is the one I like the most. It help you train not just the body, but also spiritually, with Chi (Ki) and senses. It teaches you to flow with the energy; not to fight it. In advance Aikido, many masters will become Zen like because they have synchronized with nature. A lot like many Chinese Internal MAs; deep stuff, love it!
Old Steven can do all that and more, I've seen it. The guy is amazing and just shows you what dedication and a lack of ego will do for you. He trains and teaches but does not go for the typical egotistical approach of competition. That is why you will never see the masters on TV. It is a spiritual journey. Horrible actor, great man!
Wow, Steven Segal has neither detication or a lack of ego. He is so egotistical that no one in holywood will work with him anymore, he has so little detication that rather than gain ranks as anyone else might he married a high ranking Akido Sensei and divorced her upon obtaining his black belt.
He his a horrible man, horrible actor, and no martial artist at all.
I love Aikido. I am learning the art and i have to say its very fun. i am yung but i have tryed lots of other sports and (if you consider it a sport) its my fav. Plus my master is very good at what hes dose.so i am learning well.If you can find a master and you havethe chance to do it, do it!
This art is taught to prison guards in the U.S. A friend of mine was very much into Aikido and loved to talk about it. He met, and was lucky enough to train with masters. He said some of the masters were so accomplished that they barely had to lay hands on you to put you down. A lot of the art relies on your basic fear of getting your joints broken- that uses your enemy's power against themselves.
I once took a great seminar from Koichi Tohei and he took on 10 karate black belts at one time and after finishing said feet are made to stay on the ground. Great video.
The reason they jump up is not to make him look good, but so they don't break their arm with the change of direction...they go with the move..it they went against it, their wrist, arm, and elbow will break..
Anyone who tries to "test" how effective it is aikido prbly doesnt understand how it works. watch the video of shioda gozo, 1 can understand its about placement and balance...like good runningbacks who arent fast but now how to run angles that make it hard for the d to lay hands on them. that being said, i think shaun alexander could be an aikido MASTA!!!
If it's b.s. why don't you run up to Seagal today and try to punch, grab or kick him? I'm sure since being a 7th Dan in Aikido, a total b.s. art, he'll be helpless
Right... and you don't notice the people he's tossing jumping? You don't see them stopping and struggling? This is made to make him look good. I've fought someone who did aikido and was a 4th degree. He couldn't toss me and whenever I tackled him he just fell and got pounded. This is BS.
Ey, I just posted my honest opinions. The vid was cool and all but I'm just saying he wouldn't really be able to do that in a real life situation. Btw Chuck Norris only awesome because of Walker Texas Ranger.
It's called Ukemi. The person is jumping to protect himself. This isn't a real fight dumb ass. You don't know what you're looking at. YOU DONT TOSS SOMEONE IN A REAL FIGHT. You break their wrist because the person doesn't flip.
When your mind is empty ...you can stay ahead of your opponent. I think they call it Mushin or Samadi or even Zen. Emptying your mind allows you to move more intuitively and this is a great advantage. Good Aikidoist should be meditators.

dyzina, 10 years in Aikido would NEVER get ANYONE a 5th dan.
Everything you say is very 'un-aikidoish'.. please stop the lies.

I have to see real life application...
Demonstrations are too planned, and predictable.
A full contact fight event maybe...
I trained in martial arts for years, and learned some interesting concepts...but if they cant be applied in a real life situation its useless.
Aikido seems pretty "useable"....

Unrealistic. Not effective for real fighting.

Aikido logic
Person A " Steven Segal is not a good actor is he"
Aikidoka "you do not understand his enlightened way, you show weakness and anger, his is a higher path"
Pesron B "Surely he just can't act"
Aikidoka " You lack the depth to see his profound, sensitive performance, he is beyond your level of comprehension" And so on.
Like Segals acting, Aikult do will rightfully recieve negative remarks. No defensive agressive arguments will change this.
rollingfists 5 years ago
Are you angry at Steven Segal...or just angry. I believe that Aikido may have much to offer a troubled soul such as yourself. There is no greater force than the preservation of life. Just think happy thoughts...Mnnnnkayyyy? Seriously dude...you need to realize the power of "CHILL".
Tman222 5 years ago
Aikido is fairly new, so of course it's going to have ties with other backgrounds. From what I read and based on other comments I've read Aikido is almost like another step in the process of becoming badass. Why ls would someone who has training in another form go over to a completly new form? Positive: Aikido is a higher form Negative it's easier to become badass then in other forms. Misspellings of mine are acknoledged.

Further problems with Aikido
1.Old man Ueshiba, fused some arts together, but decided his ego wasn't being stroked enough, so he created Aikultdo.
2. Aikultdo zombies pollute the MA world with their heady mix of zen psychological jargon and lacklusture techniques.
3. Aikultdo members were unloved by their mothers so spend all thier time trying to gain love through infecting the world with thier black skirted dance.
rollingfists 5 years ago
You have much anger and disrespect in you rollingfists...consider an internal art. Peace of mind is the ultimate weapon.
Tman222 5 years ago
This cult member uses the standard Aikido psychological jargon when he gets upset. He has learned well.
rollingfists 5 years ago
Problems with aikido:
1. Based mainly on cooperative training which causes practitioners to be lulled into a false sense of security.
2. No proper practice of strikes so practitioners end up forgetting to protect areas vulnerable to srikes in real fights.
3. Unrealistic practice with sword and sticks, again lulling practitioners into a false sense of security.
Put simply "Take away the pain means you take away the reality".

In fact it is not the masters martial art in any way. This is something swallowed and repeated by the gulliable.
henbucuo 5 years ago
Aikido Is Ju Jitsu with the foot movements of Japanese Kendo- sword fighting and it use's very little effort and turns any agressor's power against themselves.
It is the most difficult martial arts to do well, because you have to understand and practice the art of KI to use it effectively or you can get yourself in trouble if you try to use it and it is all defense only. This is truly the masters martial art.
Great video though.

Segal would be considered an abusive, offensive, talentless man suffering from narcisistic personality disorder and psychosis in most respectable circles. No woman would marry him, no film director will employ him and no psychologist could help him. In Aikido circles, however he is considered a demi-god. I don;#'t get you Aikido people.

wow, I was just thinking how completely egotistical Steven is. You should check out his wikipedia page, it goes in-depth into all of the horrible character flaws he has. The guy is a complete asshole, totally paranoid, has injured numerous stuntment while showing off, and abandoned his wife and kids in japan to go to hollywood.

joelsamuel 5 years ago
Simply awesome!!! Five stars!!! Amount most Japanese MAs, Aikido is the one I like the most. It help you train not just the body, but also spiritually, with Chi (Ki) and senses. It teaches you to flow with the energy; not to fight it. In advance Aikido, many masters will become Zen like because they have synchronized with nature. A lot like many Chinese Internal MAs; deep stuff, love it!

It is too bad this video suffers from aging as it shows a master at work.
fx4movies 5 years ago
Old Steven can do all that and more, I've seen it. The guy is amazing and just shows you what dedication and a lack of ego will do for you. He trains and teaches but does not go for the typical egotistical approach of competition. That is why you will never see the masters on TV. It is a spiritual journey. Horrible actor, great man!
JunkyJedi 5 years ago

XxRelentlessxDestruc 5 years ago
This art is taught to prison guards in the U.S. A friend of mine was very much into Aikido and loved to talk about it. He met, and was lucky enough to train with masters. He said some of the masters were so accomplished that they barely had to lay hands on you to put you down. A lot of the art relies on your basic fear of getting your joints broken- that uses your enemy's power against themselves.

yes I agree with Chas766... If you've ever been in any sort of joint lock then you KNOW how PAINFUL it Really IS...
you just want the pain to leave....
its not normal to feel that...
which is why they flip and rather get bruised than hear a bone snap in a very painful position!
jjlwis 5 years ago

I'm sure since being a 7th Dan in Aikido, a total b.s. art, he'll be helpless
manofaiki 5 years ago
Right... and you don't notice the people he's tossing jumping? You don't see them stopping and struggling? This is made to make him look good. I've fought someone who did aikido and was a 4th degree. He couldn't toss me and whenever I tackled him he just fell and got pounded. This is BS.

Ey, I just posted my honest opinions. The vid was cool and all but I'm just saying he wouldn't really be able to do that in a real life situation. Btw Chuck Norris only awesome because of Walker Texas Ranger.

sure, you have the right to post your opinion.
But there's nothing awesome about chuck norris. And walker texas ranger sucks balls. It's boring and lame.

Did you see how big he is? he is really tall (and now fat and bald). I am sure he can kick some ass.
VikCain 5 years ago
It's called Ukemi. The person is jumping to protect himself. This isn't a real fight dumb ass. You don't know what you're looking at. YOU DONT TOSS SOMEONE IN A REAL FIGHT. You break their wrist because the person doesn't flip.
