@litlewing AGREED!!! Bud don't forget Tony Williams, who shared those stages with him then, as well as in this performance! Dude got called to play with Miles when he was 17 years old! He definitely qualifies as monster as well.
So much talent in this quintet! Miles coaxed greatness out of the universe and filed it down to a razor sharp, obsidian edge of musical expression. We're all better for it.
I love that transition from Miles to Wayne: Miles fades out, the band slows down, Wayne blows a tune and then they shoot back into hyperspeed, all that in perfect sync!
Tony is the single-stroke roll king. Love how he has to always pull in his bass drum and hi-hat stand. Saw him once and he was doing it the whole time. Pure power.
How can the average rating of this video (as of now) be only 4-1/2 stars??? This is a brilliant quintet!! They really tore through this amazing song from Miles Smiles (1966 - every jazz fan should buy it!). If I had a dream band I would definitely get this rhythm section (Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter and Tony Williams). Man Tony blasted the whole time! Amazing!!
walks right off stage. BOOM

Herbie's solo... it's all there! My favorite Tony period. Explosive and swingin' so hard.

I've never really like this kind of jazz. Weird. I just like more structure, I guess.
robin17171 10 months ago
@robin17171
There definitely is a structure. Miles' structures are just pretty more abstract compared to many other Jazz musicians.
FunkySkunk90 10 months ago
@robin17171 Listen to Ron Carter on bass. Easy to follow the structure that way.

@robin17171
Music is subjective, but this performance is HIGHLY structured.
