I once saw a photo spread over two pages in Sports Illustrated of Konishiki and some other sumo wrestler he was going up against. The dude took up the whole spread. I can only imagine what his opponent was thinking (probably thinking, "Oh crap, I gotta wrestle this guy?")
@basketballdiva81 That fat guy blew out his knee in this match. He withdrew from this tournament and missed the next one. He then returned (even though he should have had knee surgery for torn ligaments) and competed for 11 more years. He was the first foreign wrestler to reach the rank of Ozeki. It is called respect.
I admire that he kept trying long after it was apparent that he'd never make it to Yokozuna. I think even a lot of the Japanese Sumo fans who didn't like him straight from the beginning because he is not Japanese learned to respect his tenacity. He was bullied in the heya from the time he got to Japan. Considering the amount of crap he had to put up with, one has to admire him for making it to Ozeki.
He won 3 yushos, not 2. He would never had made a great yokozuna anyway. Just like Chitoytaikai, Konishiki was to one dimensional as a rikishi. The guy he is facing here though, Kitao (known as Futahaguro when he became yokozuna), was the worst yokozuna ever though. Not a single a yusho and problem child right from the start. The only reason that he was promoted was so an ozeki spot could be found for Hoshi (yokozuna Hokutoumi).
@TheGoldenSphinx HE was not one Dimensional. Like most Sumos he had a preferred way of fighting. He favored slapping and pushing then to grapple. due to his size.. slapping was to his advantage. The only thing that stood in the way of him becoming a Yokozuna was his weight ballooned up to far and his knee went very very bad. you can see him favor it in this defeat. IF his knee stayed good he prolly would of been the first Outside Yokozuna instead of Akebono.
@TheGoldenSphinx Actually he was, he could win grappling or in a slap fight. things changed for him when he knee went bad and that took away a lot of his mobility Which to me is what made him tend to follow one dimensional, he couldn;t do much else.

Who Konishiki? He never made it to Yokozuna. His highest rank was Ozeki. The first foreigner to reach Yokozuna rank was Akebono.

Hadn't been this injury, Konishiki would have probably been the first non-Japanese Yokozuna.

he reached yokozuna rank

@XJadynX Of course most rikishi have a preferred way of fighting. But to be the best you gotta be flexible too. Konishiki wasen't flexible at all.
