  • fuckin awesome dude

  • You should record this again in HQ. Few youtube gutiarists actually work on melodies, which has more appeal to most people than endless scale shredding... you've got something good going on here. And get yourself a new amp, many guitarists out there with half the skill and twice the gear.

  • ur website doesnt work, dooshwanker.

  • Website's down for the time being. Why the hostility?

  • Awesomeee....if you had a better definition in your camera i would give you 5 stars buddy

    Anyway...you rock

  • awsome man sounds good!!

  • Hey I really like it, the only bad thing is the camera recording, but I can tell you're very talented from what you're playing. Also, you have my freakin DREAM guitar!!

  • Hey thanks! I assume you're talking about the camera's audio. I actually did direct input with my sound card, but I had a crappy amp. Oh and I rendered this video before YouTube supported high quality. Future videos should be better I hope!

Yeah, that guitar is hard to come by. It was a product of working at a musical instrument store and having good relations with our Ibanez (Hoshino Gakki) reps.

  • Oh, I see that makes sense about the sound quality! Maybe I should try to get hired at a music store lol

  • lmao ian talbert u funny fuck :D

  • Too metal for my taste, but good stuff. Nice melody.

    5*

  • Thanks! To be honest, it's a bit more metal than I usually like to play. I've been writing all kinds of music lately. Glad you like the melody though.

  • dude u so look like the fucking guy who plays in the movies screem lol

  • nice Ibanez J-custom! and nice song man! don't let these n00bs talk shit, the ones they hate are just jealous or probably don't even play guitar...oh yeah dude, and string theory! is amazing! ever read "Fabric of the Cosmos" by BrianGreene?

  • My guitar and I appreciate your compliments. You know it's odd - I have been meaning to read Fabric of the Cosmos for awhile, but never got around to it. I read some other books and SciAm articles on string theory, black holes, multiverses, and M-theory though. I formally study economics and business, but I'm a closet physics geek. And on an awesome note, Brian May (Queen guitarist) just released his thesis for print (he's a recent PhD in astro physics).

  • stingray...??? more like stingGAY!

  • let me hear the coolest song you've written

  • The stingray stabbed its furious poison barb right through my heart of steel. Nice website too, BLOGGERS SUCK! ROCK ON. You tool.

  • Steve Irwin's death was very unfortunate for his family, friends, and fans. But it's also unfortunate that there are people (who cite Irwin's death) who have nothing better to do than anonymously and unwarrantably bash another person. If you don't like the song, fine. But please don't be a prick to me because of a song you don't like.

  • Mate, who fucking mentioned Steve Irwin? I was making an over the top, insincere complement to your work to point out the fact that I think that people who film themselves playing guitar and post it on youtube are fucking wankers. I am an Australian and long time Steve Irwin fan. You made that connection, not me. Your music has no soul. Your guitar playing is so technique driven that you have forgotten, or perhaps never known how to right a good song with some fucking meaningful melody. Fuck you

  • By the way, I had a chance to browse your resume`, and you're fucking fired.

  • I don't know why I bother responding as nothing good can come of it, but you are incredibly rude and immature as to instigate a meaningless conflict. Like I said, if you don't like my work, that's fine, but don't make it about me personally. You don't know me.

As per your ignorant claims, I write and play all types of music. This song was supposed to be fun, not deep and meaningful. And about my resume, I'm taking classes for graduate school now, hence no work. Not fired. Go away please.

  • OMG man that was absolutly amazing i loved every minute of it...you sir are an inspiration and even a god. How do you live a normal life with such godliness at your fingertips?

  • Um... thanks! If I am a god, I should have no problem acing tomorrow's calculus midterm. I'll let you know if I'm actually a god or not after the test, heh.

Besides, I'm an advocate of string theory which may not be compatible with godliness.

  • I like it! Nice Ibanez!

  • Thanks!

  • Its good, but i couldn't hear anything like pinch harmonics, normal slides or some long notes..

No point playing really fast if something else sounds better. sure it looks cool but theres no feeling. And some of your sweeping is sloppy, replace them with some long notes and a harmonic or two

  • Perhaps so. I like to write all different types of guitar music. This was one of my 80's-style chug-metal songs. I have some other newer songs that focus more on emotion and phrasing. I like Stingray for what it is: fast and fun, even if it's not the most expressive piece of music. Nonetheless, you make some very good points and I agree with you. Check out my other songs too. :-)

  • I LOVE IT!!!! Simply beautiful. wat brand amplifier do u use?

  • Sorry forgot to respond sooner. Glad you like it! But don't copy my guitar amp: it's a crappy Peavey Bandit 112. Some Peaveys are nice, but not this one.

  • awesome soloing but i think the backtrack has too much fuzz in it, but thats just my opinion

  • :( to bad!!

  • youre scary

  • Boo!

  • Smexellent reminds me of 16-bit console tracks but more ethereal and expressive. I like the tone, extra crispy.

  • Thanks man. I actually was inspired by some 16-bit console tracks (not any of the MegaMan games though). Glad you like the tone, but I'm not crazy about it.

  • You are good but what the heck is up with the GQ suit? Anyway keep playing. Long live shred!

  • Thanks. I wore the suit to make people ask "what's up with the suit?" And yeah, shred shreds. :-)

  • dude are you playing a metal zone directly into your comp? the tone is awful.

  • Yeah, I know about the tone already... No effects. Peavey Bandit 112 directly into sound card. Things are different now.

  • Wow seriously im am very sorry.

The reason is because you're hella good, but you've forgotten 1 thing...your pinkie. Start using it now or you'll get carpel tunnel. The world doesn't need to lose a guitar player like you!

  • Well... thanks for the thought! Check my new videos though and you'll see (hopefully) that my methods have changed.

  • Satch rules. I am not a big fan of the harmonized 80's single note wabble-shred, but man, you sure are good at it.

Man, I bet you could lay down some sweet blues riffs. Do that, lose the jacket and start beating off all the chicks! haha

  • Thanks man. I'm actually not really into this genre any more so than other instrumental music. I like it all! (See some of my other videos, esp the new stuff)

I've got kind of a folk-blues chicken pickin' acoustic coming up too.

Oh about the chicks... I'm spoken for, and she just happens to love Satriani music too! :-D

  • I wasn't hitting on you! I am a man!

    Hahaha

  • Oh I know, I wasn't trying to imply that at all... you just reminded me that my lady loves this kind of music!

  • Hello everybody. I'm working on a new shred fusion song called "Deuterium Reaction" (geek joke, get it?)

Please preview it: first video response above!

  • fucking nice ibanez, J-custom heh. yeah, the sound quality is a bit off, could just be the computer, but yeah, your def. good at guitar, nice shredding, and its cool that your writing your music. i like your whammy usage, it reminds me of the way Jason becker used his to get his like exotic awesome phrasing

  • Wow, thanks. I'm glad you liked it. Thanks for the Becker comparison, but I know I'm nowhere near him! :-) Peace.

  • your use of your tremolo system is repulsive. your 8th note alternate picking is slop. there is absolute inconsistency in your lead playing on your song foundation, you can't keep up. and I believe your tone is the absolute worst I have ever heard. this is not guitar shredding, its cheese grading. next time put a tortilla beneath you and make us a cheese crisp.

  • Alright man, thanks for your angry rant. But where in this video did I say "I'm an awesome shredder?" I'm just playing what I like to write and play, and I don't care if you don't like it. Don't listen. Some people like it, so I share it.

Besides, this vid is 2 years old. I couldn't help the tone at the time, but I have new equip now. My playing is better now too.

  • relax bro.. I am just braken balls. and your kind reply is cool.. your better then a thousand other players out there. it's the good feeling you get when your playing that really matters. thanx for sharing.

  • I have to agree to everything said. And what's up with the jacket? lol

  • not a big fan of your tone, but great playing.

  • Pretty awesome riffs, man. Is Steve Vai one of your influences? Because your fingering and playing styles are definitely similar to his.

  • Sure, Vai is such an inspirational player, I'm sure most aspiring instrumental/shred players look up to him. I think I'm actually more influenced by Joe Satriani though.

  • i have no idea how the fuck you pick like that but good work on the song.

  • Thanks. Magic, that's how. Actually Friedman and I think Steve Morse pick this way too.

  • the sweep picking could do with some work but aside from that, it was very good.

  • yeah, i agree that there are lots of good guitars, but i personally like ibanez most. i like sharp but still elegant shape and i allso love the neck and the fretboard. ps i do not understand people saying that shredding is not a music. i think it depends on the way you play it. so keep it up, nice work pal. :)

  • I have better gear now, but nothing I do is going to change this video.

  • nice man, i love shredding, and that was melodic shredding, cool! :) by the way, ibanez are the best guitars because of shape and vibe, do you agree? :)

  • Thanks bro, glad you liked it. "Best" is kinda subjective and there are a lot of great guitars out there. I really like Ibanez though: craftsmanship (Team J is amazing), neck shape, body shape/feel, tone (at least on high-end models), and technology.

  • Thank you, glad you saw it that way. :-)

  • jesus, for you people that are complaining about the tone of the guitar, try recording your own tones with a video camera and see how your sound comes out before you judge this guys, if anything the camera probably just doesnt have the greatest mic on it, if you know anything about playing guitar, you'd be able to see that, though his composition isnt the most creative, his technique is pretty damn good.

  • keep working on it. accuracy is key, asis control.

  • cool check out my compositions

i posted one in vid response

    5/5 to u

  • Hey thank you! Cool videos yourself - keep it up! I hope a lot of people check out your stuff.

(I generally only use my own stuff as video responses, sorry to say).

  • Hey man, nice stuff. I really like some of the riffs. But the tone really takes away from the song, I know I'm probably not the first person to say that. What amp/recording gear are you using? But yeah, really solid playing, good job!

  • Thanks for the comment! Yeah I've heard about the tone issue before. Check my new song for better tone (I hope). I was using a Peavey Bandit 112 (crap) direct line-in on the sound card. Then used CoolEdit Pro, a multitrack program, to manage the different tracks.

  • Hey everybody, I have a NEW SONG out called "The Purpose". It's the first link in the video responses. It's kind of an emotional shred ballad - check it out!!!

  • its cool it reminds me of final fantasy battle themes, the guitar hes using is great its just the amp sound, and his playing is great so everyone stop bitching about the sound

  • Haha, thanks for the support. I don't really mind people voicing their opinions, as long as they're not rude. Take it easy man.

  • Great idea man but you really need to learn to get a good tone..it ruins the sound of your song because that tone is COMPLETELY Horrible lol sorry but anyways just dial up a good tone and that song will be wicked :) have a good one man

  • u play cool.

    but i hate you're tone.

    idk why

    awsome playing though

  • IT's very cool. but it gets a bit dull with only shred,; more melodies, and maybe even a few power chords (besides the background). Better than I can write though. I just need to learn more theory on that front. It's cool. Keep it up.

  • wooops...little out of tune there...otherwise it rocks!

  • You play guitar well enough to get some better recording gear. And add more instruments.

  • Heh, thanks. Agreed, but I'm poor and nobody wants to buy them for me :-P.

  • fuck dude, ur hardcore! good shit!

  • is that a gorilla amp with a blown speaker

  • It's a Peavey Bandit 112. Yes, I know. Don't buy or record with those.

  • Pretty decent.

  • that is pretty sick dude!

i can hear some jason becker influence in there!

kudos for playing with sleeves too...

    you rule:]

  • Thanks man. Yeah Becker kicks ass. I think I was composing more in the vein of oldschool Satriani and Vai. Yea sleeves mess things up pretty bad :-P

  • wow cool great shreding, Dude can u send me tabs or tell me the name of the artis and song so ill find tabs? Thanks,

  • Thanks. I am the artist and the song is "Stingray." I never really made tabs for this, save a few of the harder riffs.

  • Awesome playing and all, everything about that is great, but the sound quality needs improvement!

  • lighten up jackass

  • dedicated to steve irwin

  • Um no. Steve Iwrin was the man, and I'd never disrespect him by writing about "his stingray." I wrote this song over a year before his death. And you're the second person to have said this.

  • this is the kinda music (along with others) i grew up with. thanks for keeping that sound alive, keep rockin'

  • Rushfreek can't be too impressive if he has played for over thirty years and it took him four hours to learn a cheesy heart tune.

  • pipocinyd: Yeah, these are the sorts of people who wish they were still under 30, play sloppy blues all day, smell like cheap beer, and whine about your emotionless music when you play more skillfully and more interestingly than them at some guitar store floor demo. (Yeah, I've seen this MANY times at guitar stores)

  • You STILL don't get it do you?...I will NO LONGER waste my time educating your ass. lmao.

  • You find me "annoying" because you can't swallow the truth. By what you retorted with, you ARE anal.Furthermore, I have liked a few "shred" players, RE: Steve Vai, and he plays with soul as well. You have no soul or feel in your playing and it is mechanical at best. If you actually listened to what I have to say,(I've been playing for over 30 years), you would learn to take constructive criticism, or get out of music altogether. This is how we learn.

  • I like constructive criticism but am less inclined to listen when that person posts fanatically: "frantic criticism." Seems like people go on YouTube solely to argue, be rude, or vent. Musical taste is subjective; I enjoy playing and writing this music. I'm doing it for free. I like what I do and I share it because some people also like it. I'm not trying to compete in the business.

  • Hey buddy it took me 4 hours to learn it lmfao. You werent being insulted and if you can't handle the heat, then get out of the kitchen. This is how the music world is. You're either GOOD or you're NOT. end of story.

  • RE Barracuda: I wasn't insulted in the least. But my band mates aren't here to defend themselves so I have to proctor things.

  • Too much waddly widdly man. Not enough feel.

  • You obviously don't like shred which frankly isn't my problem. Annoying that you post several times on all my videos. I get the message already.

About "Barracuda": I'm not normally anal, but I deleted your comments because I don't want my former band mates to be insulted online. We weren't trying to create an exact cover of Heart's song. We only had 2 weeks to learn/practice it before that show (plus tons of other songs). I don't care if it's not exactly like Heart or you don't exactly like it.

  • You guitar has a horrible sound. I know mine does too in Spirit of radio by Rush, but I was trying to record via webcam and it sucked ass.

  • i always listen to this, s'awesome, faveourites parts are the beggining and the key change round the middle.

  • Hey thanks walrus98. Glad you like it! Yeah, the key change was kind of a last minute idea as I was trying to make it seem kinda like a Satriani progression.

  • hey!! at about 1:10 thats the arpeggio you stole from me!! lol

  • Oh whoa, if that's Mike Clements, then you're probably right! Now that you mention it, I definitely got the shape ideas from you but I changed the progression some. But then again, I think we both stole the idea from Steve Vai in "Whispering a Prayer" around 5:50-6:15 and a few of his other songs too. Damn, sorry dude, didn't even realize it... that's funny tho! (hope you're not upset)

So when are you gonna post some videos or something? I'm sure your music would be popular on here.

  • it seems speeded up :-/ however..I really dunno..maybe cause it's strange that a little webcam as yours can do such an HIGH FRAMERATE...anyway,good job dude ;-) keep up the good work..but REMEMBER..a floyd rose need a GOOD SETUP.Search something about settin up it well cause the guitar sounds out of tune on the high notes ;-)

    Regards - Adrian

  • Sped up? Heh! If you want a reference, go watch my sweeping video response wherein I talk normally and play very fast. The webcam is about 30fps, which I believe is what YouTube uses. Anyhow, my Floyd (Edge actually) is set up correctly, but I was using old strings I think (old strings don't hold their intonation on high frets)... this vid is over a year old.

  • wrong..old strings hold the intonation if the floyd is set right, also if they are ANCIENT :-P anyway..I've watched your other videos..so..forget the speeded up comment ;-) regards ;-)

  • y r u wearing a suit

  • @ meluaz:

"Dear Strong Bad. How do type with boxing gloves on?"

  • TOP STUFF

  • or 1.25-1.40

  • Ok from (1:22 - 1:40), I got a PowerTab file and an ASCII (txt) file on my server. Unfortunately, YouTube doesn't allow URL's anymore so try to decode this...

    bryce(dot)kicks-ass(dot)net/stingray122-140.ptb

    bryce(dot)kicks-ass(dot)net/stingray122-140.txt

  • thanks for doing htis for me but i cant get them to popup when i type them i n

  • twosup, I'm not sure if earlier you had an error opening these files. Right now though, my server seems to be down. If you message me with your email and preferred file format (.txt or .ptb), I can email you the tab.

  • Nice jacket

  • dude friken sweet i love your playing i got a couple of questions do you have a tab for this and would you send t to me please id love to learn this song

  • Hey, glad you like it. I never tabbed this out and it would probably take me way too long to do the entire song. I think some of it (like the first 30 seconds or so) you could probably pick out by ear and by watching my fingering. If there's a specific part you can't get, I'd be happy to tab that part.

  • first 30 seconds please no hurry

  • thank you i think your great man im not as good as you but i plan to be buwahahahahaahaha <--- evil laugh i know im to old to do that but who cares

  • Forced, badly executed... Ok, some constructive criticism: Find some originality, and write some songs that don't sound like they have been composed for an early 90's computer game.

  • tomcom:

    1) Fair 'nuff about the playing. This vid is over a year old and I'm much better now.

    2) Originality? Sorry man but I think I found a good original vibe on this song.

    3) Early 90s computer games had great music.

  • man, if you had some tone, then it would be amazing. you sound like you're going through some boss cheapo distortion thing. such a nice guitar should have a great sound to it. try adding some bass. or just using the overdrive from the amplifier. the peice itself was very well done. best of luck.

  • Thank you OneDrunkIrishman. Yeah I was playing through a crappy amp and its stock distortion (Peavey Bandit 112). I recently upgraded all my stuff, and now the guitar sounds great! Will have to post new stuff soon...

  • You need less treble and more bass. Other than that, very good.

  • kinda reminds me of megaman and jason becker , and I love it !

  • I'm glad you like it! You're like the 10th person who's said it sounds like Megaman, which is odd because I never really played that game. I'd say it's more like F-Zero. Becker, yea I can see the resemblance, though he kinda puts me to shame! :-D

  • nah, everyone's learning, even becker did.. he practised guitar since he was 5, and then went to a special school voor all the shredding . so you are going great towards shred!

  • This sounded pretty generic at first but you've got some unique melody ideas in there! This video is definitely a lot better than the first one I saw of you way back when. You've improved a lot, man. =) Keep it up, dude!

  • Thats a RG8470F j-custom right? How did you get that?

  • Yes. I'd tell you how I got it, but then I'd have to kill you. :-) Actually I got it when I worked at a music (instrument) store and was able to "pull some strings."

  • oh sweet

  • u can only sue if ur song is copyrighted

  • Actually, as long as you have proof that your intellectual property existed before somebody ripped you off, you have automatic ownership rights to that property, copyright or not. This is enforceable in court.

  • yea but who wants to go through all that? have some no talent creep steal your work and then you have to fight to get credit. Then everyone thinks the song was "Dj butt slammer's" original tune. I dont want to turn on the doors and then have snoop dork rapping in the background.Dont say rock to a rapper. They will get a pipe out...

  • Oh watch out that some rapper dont sample your stuff and use it in some god awful rap abortion...

thanks Again for a great tune.

  • YOu sound great! dont let these other jerks in here give you a hard time. Thats good stuff! As a girl who plays rock guitar I get a lot of hazing by men who cant handle the fact that a girl can play better than them...There is a lot of guitar people out there but making your own stuff is where its at. Nothing depresses me more than playing other peoples songs. ROCK ON!!!

  • Thank you Fraiyia! Yeah song writing is really fun, and most people who play shred don't care for it. They're more interested in playing some Yngwie song note-for-note. Oh, and I wish more girls would play this sort of stuff because there's a stereotype that it's all testosterone. Maybe you can post some vids; we'd love to hear!

  • Well I would but I am affraid some rapper will rip off my tunes...Bet you didnt know about Nelly furtado ripping a c64 song note for note...Then theres other stuff like rappers using Ozzy stuff. NO way! I was checkin guitar hero at walmart and this dork says to me. HEre play against me. I said NO thanks I Have a real Guitar or two at home...

  • btw Im kinda looking for a way to incorporate norse music with metal and shred. I mean would could be simpler to fit together? Viikings and metal...Make my icelanding blood boil! The next thing I am working on is going to be called Ice Giants...and One about Freya: - Goddess of Love, Beauty, War, Magic and Wisdom...

  • Heh, rappers? I doubt they'd want a low-bitrate YouTube recording to sample from. Plus if you catch one in the act, you can sue! I never tried Guitar Hero - no interest heh. As for the Norse stuff, that's covered by a huge chunk of metal/shred. Check Fintroll. Or Children of Bodom. Or those old Valhallan Malmsteen tunes. Not my cup of tea, but sometimes it's fun.

  • Yea I know about the norse rock. I want to do my own stuff. as for the rappers yea Nelly Piece of sh___ fertado got a c64 sid chip editor and riped this finnish guys tune from the game (moon alien)and didnt pay royalties- for his song "do it". bastich! but thats going on all the time because if they got near my gibson they would melt...low band width or no there are a lot of rip offs...going on. As for KMFA dude sorry you got insulted but most rappers dont have talent. Get over it.

  • Sounds scandalous! I'll be sure to not sit near Fertado when I become famous. :-)

I think KMFA was actually responding to TheIbanezGuy: "...keep practising till its perfect, and consider getting a recording of drums and bass."

  • at first i didn't like, but now i see that it's your composition, and good job with it =) keep practising till its perfect, and consider getting a recording of drums and bass.

  • thank you so much, the world definitely needed this piece of advice

  • Good composition man, techncally n lil sloppy n it sounds like you could perhaps use a compression pedal but the composition i like, composing is sumthing im working on/going mad with atm lol

  • My favorite from your videos!

  • Come on guys, this guy is a joke!

  • Wow your amazing.. i myself play guitar but after watching your video your a influence...i like the tone...how do you write a peice of music like that??

  • Glad you like it! (though sometimes I cringe at the tone :-)

There's no right way to write music, but for this one I started with the main hook (0:17). Sometimes you just get a kernel of an idea (as Satriani said) and once you play it and set some chords to it, things start to take shape. So for me, hook came first, then I found chords for it, then added other parts that seemed to fit the theme. Sorry this isn't detailed, but I'm out of room!

  • dunno why some idiots post the shit they post.

I really liked your composition, but I don't think the microphone is good enough to let us fully enjoy your playing.

I really liked this one, you've got skills!

Question: How much did that ibanez cost?

  • Thanks! Yeah I know the recording quality is crap; next time I'll get it down better. The guitar should retail around $2800 or so but I got it for about $1300. Don't ask.

  • are those custom inlays? i've just never seen an ibanez with inlays like that!

  • Well, they're similar to the Jem inlays, but I believe they're specific to the Japanese Custom models. I'm using an Ibanez Japanese Custom RG8470F. They refer to this inlay as "tree of life" but I think that's a catch-all term.

  • nice one!! but i think it'll be better with a drumtrack, dont you think so? also try "alvin de leon" for more electric guitar compositions... cool!

  • whats that thing on his fret board its called inlays dumb ass O and im shure your one of the only ones that thinks it looks weird if its so weird why does so many people want a jem that has thos inlays stock on the fretboard ya probably cause its weird huh dumb ass its art

  • this is sweet

  • what are those fools saying? your suit look ultra pimp and your skillz are kickin' big time. you got that steve vai style down especially when you dive the whammy bar

  • kick ass, never seen anybody hold a pick like that before, keep on rockin

  • God you`re ugly.

  • Wow, you're a moron, but I shouldn't expect much more from somebody with 1337 in their name. You should hang out with tootybugz; you two have at least a few things in common...

  • sounds cool but the way he looks he'll never be anything. look hes wearin a suit. whats that on the fret board??looks weird. people's looks change..

  • So you think that music is all about what clothes you wear and how your guitar looks? Either get with it or go watch some MTV...

  • Damn, thats all i have to say how long have you been playing excactly?

  • KillswitchGuitar: Thanks. This vid is a year old now, but I've been playing around 10 years. I only took guitar seriously though for about 5.

  • Why with such a nice guitar as a J-Custom is your tone so horrible?

  • its the quality of the vid,

    awesome man!

  • nice man!

  • wheres the blues you shred traitors

  • Blues are for middle-aged men who think they're still young. Not a big fan...

  • Pretty good. Your speed is very nice. The distortion could have been turned down a bit, but otherwise this is very well composed. Wouldn't be surprised if I saw you as one of the future's newer guitar greats.
