  • About Chomsky. His review of verbal behavior was completely manufactured on false premises (It is believed by many that he did not even read the book Verbal Behavior. He certainly did not read the prerequisite book Science and Human Behavior (1953)). Chomsky was talking about language; grammar, syntax etc., and S-R psych. Skinner was talking about verbal BEHAVIOR and response-reinforcement (R-S) psych. See kenneth maccorquodale (1970) and BF Skinner On Having a Poem 1971 (mp3). Google!!!

  • @bfsfan100 Cognitive psychologistd accepted Chomsky's review without question, with other 'behaviorist' confident he was attacking Skinner's distinct behaviorism not theirs, when in reality the contrary was the case. The easy acceptance of Chomsky's review typifies psychology in general, it is fad driven. One of the oppositions favorite sayings is that Behaviorism is dead!!! Skinners work is alive and well in the field now called Applied Behavior Analysis!!!

  • the more I study psychology the more I get into behaviorism, not a radical view however for the well being of a human being point of view. thanks for the upload

  • I reading up about him now, i live in Jamaica i love the fact that he studied behaviorism... i believe in it too. loving my new book introduction to psychology! yaaa

  • I dont see the big deal about Skinner anymore, wasnt he famously wrong about... everything?

  • @Dymdez Noooooooo. NononononoNO. Now, he was (depending on which side you take) possibly wrong about certain verbal behavior aspects (Chomsky's review).

But he is and was very right about alot of things.

  • @xsvmaster What things was he right about? To my knowledge he asserted that human behavior can be scientifically accounted for. And because of this assertion he concluded that society could optimize itself by understanding these inevitable behaviors. I always have thought this was completely insane.

  • @Dymdez How so?

  • @xsvmaster Well, you're the one that mentioned Chomsky's Verbal Behavior so you must be familiar with the arguments against Skinner. I found Chomsky's review quite convincing. Apparently the entire cognitive scientific community did as well. The burden of proof isn't on me to explain why he is wrong, his claims must be backed up with evidence first.

  • @Dymdez There have been critiques of Chomsky's review. If Skinner was wrong (and let's assume he was for a moment) it was mostly on Verbal Behavior. Verbal Behavior was NOT Skinner's entire career.

  • @Dymdez Also, I like how this is an intelligent conversation happening on...GASP...THE INTERNET!

  • Thank you so much for uploading. I really aprreciate :)

  • Fabulous!

  • BF Skinner was much maligned for his attempt to formulate a practical solution to global overpopulation and over consumption of natural resources in both Walden 2 and Beyond Freedom and Dignity. These videos reveal him to be a great humanist rather than the manipulative fascist his critics claimed him to be. Sadly, in his final years he doubted world leaders would ever adopt a technology of behavior as a strategy to save the world. His science suits neither the right nor the left.

  • @Cartoonwarper Couldn't agree more. Certain people still see him as a facist today and I just don't understand it.

  • Ellsworth Toohey

  • subtext would be nice... hard to understand him with my english knowledge :(

  • thank you ! Skinner gave a master class !

  • thank you !

  • Q: How many psychiatrists does it take to change a light bulb?

A: Only one, but the light bulb must want to change.....

    .....but I digress :o)

  • @jamieblond1 HI-YO!

  • brilliant! check Jacque Fresco! and he's still alive! 95yo

  • Many thanks for the upload. Have not seen this before. Always great to hear it from the horses mouth.

  • Quite right tmparrot!!! The work of BFS and his disciples is immense. A visit to the BFS Foundation web site highlights this. The world may not be directly aware of his contributions to improving our lives but they are reaping the rewards. An objective study of his work I feel would yield a posthumous Nobel Prize! (Physiology or Medicine).

  • This is not only informative but also compelling to the world at large. My profession is fundamentally based on behavior modification to business. I believe B F Skinner has made more positive contributions through his scientific discoveries about behavior than all of the so-called "psychologists" or "psychiatrists" combined. It's unfortunate that the world at large so far has not "adapted" to these amazing discoveries and the power of there applications to make the world simply a better place.

  • Absolutely fantastic upload. Can I be cheeky and ask for a description of the time, date and location and if possible the introduction and conclusion to the filming. Usually with such a show there would be a formal introduction and a closing thank you.

Video/Audio links: Google Vimeo, then search B F Skinner (J Michael on BFS). Google Internet Archive, then search B F Skinner (Open Mind video on freedom and audio of B F Skinner speech accepting Humanist award).

  • Thank you very much for sharing such a good thing. It´s great!
