lol i remember always having a watery eye on the way down cuz of my contact lenses so it was hard to focus lol XD fun memories though, marchdowns were my favourite activity.
You are so correct. Norwich was great during the 70's-80's but has changed. I am a Norwich Grad, "77" My son is currently at VMI because he wanted a true military experience that Norwich seems to be slacking on these days. I liked the days of Regimental Commander Robert G Glass. Again, outstanding VMI Cadets!
This motivates me. I don't know why but it does. I'm going to have to go to this school. I was debating on VMI, Norwich or the Citadel but I think VMI is the winner.
My cousin left for matriculation at VMI literally about and hour and a half ago, I hope he does well, we worked his butt of to get into college. I hope to go to VMI one day, but I've got an enlistment with the army to finish, 11B HOOAH. FISHBURNE MILITARY SCHOOL Scientia Est Potestas, (closest thing i ever go to attending VMI.).
I don't have a clue about VMI? I've been a cadet there for the past 3 years. I know it's called SRC; I wrote "march-down" because most people in the general public wouldn't know what SRC is.
Class of 90, here. SRC and the march down are two diffeent things. After SRC, Retreat, and the firing of the evening gun, upperclassmen were allowed to fall out if they wished. The rest marched down. Many is the evening I walked down later. Many is the evening I fell out and walked downtown to Spanky's (to eat) or to Estelle's (to get drunk).
1st and 2nd classmen can fall out at the bottom of the hill after marching to crozet nowadays. The only time anybody is able to fall out before marching down are the first classmen right after BRC.
I went to the open house overnight visit for potential cadets this Friday to Saturday. Got to see some parades and marches. Ate in Crozet Hall. All very cool.
Because military colleges like VMI and military high schools in the US were founded by retired military officers who were West Point graduates. One of their school's founders was Major General Francis H. Smith, a West Point alumni, who served as Superintendent at VMI for 50 years. One of their former college physics professor was General Stonewall Jackson, a West Point alumni, who lead VMI cadets in battle during the American Civil War.
This video gives me a hard on just listening to it...gives me good memories of LCWB...Class of 2000. Looks like it could have been filmed out of my old room 401 or 403. Cold Steel Charlie baby...
Actually, that's the entire Corps....the Rats had already integrated with the upperclassmen at this point. But I will agree that VMI is pretty good about letting cadets run the Corps, including the Band.
Okay, you would know since it's your video, but that looks like 200 cadets, 300 at most--did you start 3/4 of the way through the march-down, or are 3/4 of the Corps on some kind of permit?
The reason there are only 300 or so is because last year there were three different SRC formations. One for 1st Batt, one for 2nd Batt and one for athletes. This was done because with the renovations to Crozet Hall. This year there are only two one for the Regiment and then one for the athletes.
I just had a flashback! Did I actually do this for 4 years?

P.S. Does this school only commission only Army officers?

VMI commissions officers for the Army, Navy, Marines and Air Force. I believe there is even a limited program for the Coast Guard.

That's just the Rat Battallion. No doubt the rest of the Corps formed up in nasty grey polyester instead of ducks & fell out at the top of the hill.
Say what you want about the drill quality, at least VMI has its own Band Co--West Point just has some Army guys do it for them.
oldcorps96 5 years ago
Actually, that's the entire Corps....the Rats had already integrated with the upperclassmen at this point. But I will agree that VMI is pretty good about letting cadets run the Corps, including the Band.
