Zola was absolutely instrumental in winning the cup. In this match, he scored a spectacular equalizer, and set up Vialli for another.
Then in the semifinal, he produced one of his magical moments against Wimbledon to make it 2-0 and game safe. In the final, he spectacularly improvised a backheel assist to make it 2-0, and game safe.
@25GianfrancoZola25 Hughes was also very important in that run. It was him who came on to change the Liverpool game. In the semi vs Wimbledon (who had tonked us 4-2 earlier that season) he scored the opener to settle the early nerves and then rounded it off. In the final his run pulled a Boro defender away, allowing Di Matteo a clear run at goal and the rest his history.
This was the comeback of all comebacks 2-0 down at half-time and remember sitting in The Matthew Harding that afternoon, thinking it was over, but what was to follow 2nd half was breathtaking, Vialli,Zola and Hughes took Liverpool apart.
Gullit was such bum manager, but a great player. What a team we had back then, we could have won the league, but the cup was good enough and my god was it good!
the late 90's to the early 00's was definitely a transitional period in Chelsea's history, without those years, Chelsea wouldn't be what it is today in my opinion
Wonderful comment mate. Too many idiots who claim Chelsea are plastic club and have only been around since 2003 are in fact plastic themselves. For they either knowingly or unknowingly overlook what Hoddle, Gullit, Vialli etc. did for us during this time period.
@danzig2288 Too true. I started following the PL closely right before Hoddle's time and I was priviledged to see us grow and grow out of the shadow of the 80's and experience a revival. Hoddles talented but erratic side, to the Italian revolution and sexy football, to Ranieri it was a wonderfully attractive (on their day) chelsea that eventually got bought by RA. We should have won the PL in 98.
Baldwin, Charlie Cook, Peter Bonneti. Jimmy Greaves (England's greatest ever striker and a product of our academy) Zola, Wise, Nevin, Dixon, Ron Harris, Tambling and the KING PETER OSGOOD, we are proud of our history!
@KidAlphabet spot on. and people forget that abramovich didint turn up till 2003! all the leg work was done before then...and many of the big buys were wank!
@KidAlphabet the early Ambrahamoviv's were definitely a transitional period Shiteski's history. Without those years, Shiteski wouldn't be what it is today in my opinion
i know we've won the league and become a powerhouse in european football since abramovich came, but the late 90's are my favourite years, played the best football in england and won many trophy's. up the chels!
I was in cape town for this game and watched it with the 'South African Liverpool' fans. What a great day. Thank you for that. Best football day of my life. Thanks also to the Liverpool fans for not beating me up when I was runing round the bar shouting a lot.
There are many other Vids of Chelsea beating Liverpool but it is called history something Liverpool fans live on considering there has been no league title for donkeys yrs.
More like raped. This season will be no different. The only silverware Rafat the pastry chef and Liverpoop will ever come close to would be a cutlery set on a dinner table served with horse shit on a plate.
Did Liverpool die? Haha, just kidding. But they did in 2.nd. I cracked my toe when Hughes scored, running in to the wall. We went crazy. Those were the times when Premier league and the FA cup was magic .
i remember this gamelike it was yesterday i was 13 years old watchin it with my grandad dwn the local. went into school the next day with the biggest grin on my face u will ever see.
i agree jackdm my dad took me to see them for the first time in 1990 when we were living in w london, but the succes of the past 10 years makes all of the time spent as an underdog and a lesser team, worth it. its still the chelsea, let go of history and live in the now.
i dunno what chelsea i prefer, obviously the winning trophies and being more successfull is amazing, but chelsea are becoming man utd where everyone supports us and home games theres no atmosphere. fans b4 we won the premier league are the real fans.
best game i have ever been to. about 15 at the time in the old west stand on the wooden seats ready to go home at half time being 2 down to liverpool didnt see any way back then brings on hughes at half time. best ever
Chelsea will never be the same anymore oh god i miss the old chelsea
