@standingontruth1 ive done all of those things. Fortunately for me there has never been a single shred of evidence for the existence of a god or afterlife.
@PoetsLight I think you can get one on itunes for about 30 or so. I don't know if it's the entire book but I know it does have him singing the bend the forks and crack the plates song. You might want to check that out
Wait, wait, wait... how do you dislike this? Not, seriously, how in the name of all the Valar can you dislike this? IT'S THE VOICE OF TOLKIEN HIMSELF!!!!!!
One other comment You said at the end of your comments "Why you would doubt it is beyond me?" I have to say this. If I believed everything that people say on the internet, people that I don't know and about the provenance of something I have no way of checking out I would be in deep trouble. For instance I have studied Egyptian history for many years and if I had a dollar for every incorrect comment I have read I would be a wealthy woman. I definitely wasn't trying to impugn anyone's character.
My apologies! I was sure I read somewhere that he didn't read/record his own works. And I also thought it sounded like Rob Inglis. Someone else e-mailed me and said he didn't think it was Rob Inglis so I stand corrected all the way around. AND I am so thrilled to know that it IS Professor Tolkien. I also agree with everyone who has said how exciting it is to hear him! I am going to go back and listen with new ears. Thanks for setting me straight!
Come on people............this is NOT Tolkein it is the fabulous British actor Rob Inglis who has done a gazillion readings of The Hobbit and LOTR. Also his voice is the voice you hear on any of the readings on the LOTR Extended cut DVD. When for instance Peter Jackson is talking about how they decided on the location for the Dead Marshes (actually built it in the car park at Stone Street) Rob Inlgis is reading from Two Towers the description of the Dead Marshes. Please do some reasearch!
@muffin6369 Ok; I've looked up Rob Inglis and I can confirm that this isn't him, or at least it doesn't sound like him. The audio for his version is much better. Still I do have a hard time believing this was Tolkien too. He spoke in a very proper english that made him hard to understand, especially when you hear his interviews.
:) yes, i heard that Ian McKellan listened to Tolkien read for a long time, and tried to literally copy his way of speaking in order to play Gandalf. So I guess you and Ian agree!
fascinating that he changes his voice completely when he speaks as Gollum, to the point where he comes very close to Andy Serkis' portrayal in the movies..
@miketokles Funny you should say that; Ian McKellen, who played Gandalf, actually based the way he spoke in the LOTR films on the way Tolkien speaks himself.
He reads very emotionally. Like grandparents read to their grandchildren. Simply magical. Tolkien speaks to us behind all those years. Rest in peace John
Tolkein was the starting point of my writing and imagination. Indeed he is among my favorite authors. To hear J.R.R. Tolkein recite his own words is incredible. Thank You for posting it. I continue to return to his work to this day.
I saw some spelling errors and grammar errors in The Hobbit, but thats his editors fault, J.R.R Tolkien is still the worlds most greatest author anyway!
@TheBioBuilder In a world of computers and automatic spell check you still see an overabundance of spelling and grammatical errors, it's a true wonder how this man wrote such a genius literary work of art with only ink, pen and paper. The best he could of possibly had back then was a dictionary, but in the spur of inspiration who has time to consult a dictionary? We must grasp our inspiration quickly, put it to paper as fast as possible before we lose it forever.
@TheBioBuilder Many 'mistakes' were intentional. He used "further" instead of "farther", "elves" and "dwarves" instead of "elfs" and "dwarfs" etc. He deliberately used grammar and the spelling of many words idiosyncratically to suggest a rhythm and mindset to the reader. The first time The Hobbit was printed the publisher corrected all his 'mistakes', and it took him 3 more editions to correct them (most of them) back to the intended version.
I suppose you're an English speaker?! Why are you trying to be so smart not knowing a shit of English grammar? I am not English but I can use a dictionary to see if it's a mistake or not. All your comment is useless.
@vovka8308 Again, his grammatical mistakes were intentional. He fought with the publisher to keep them even though the editors would go and correct them anyhow. He helped write definitions for the Oxford dictionary, so he knew the mistakes he was making, he just decided to use them under a sense of artistic license. Books are art, not math. Put the dictionary down; language at its best is not a prescribed formula, or else everyone would read microwave instruction manuals for fun.
Hands down my favorite author...I can read through the series and by the time i'm done, i can start over and read it again. Amazing to hear him read his own work!
To write a book, a world so full of creatures, culture and history is trully remarkable. Cristopher Tolkien could try to gather all of his father's notes and make books with them, and yet a lot would be missing. Both notes writen in papper and what lied in JRR's mind. The chapter's name itself is well thought and created. That world you love and imagine was real. It was real inside the mind of a genius.
Same here 'dow2961', first time i've ever heard his voice. Awsome chapter riddles in the dark....Imagine a Audio book lotr read by JRR Tolkein....ah well we can only dream..
did you know in most of stphen kings novels, the master of horror always makes remarks on tolkiens booksand characters. i think king was a fan of tolkiens work.
He was. He states that if he hadn't already been into the writing of the horror genre when he read Lord of the Rings for the first time, he would have been a fantasy writer, but if you read The Stand, his Dark Tower books and stuff, they are all tribute to Tolkien. Don't think there is any writer who isn't influenced by the great Tolkien!
One week ago, I had to play Gollum (I love him!!!) and that was quite funny, especially the "Is it nice my preciousssss? It it juicy? is it scrumptously crunchable" part ^^
how old is this recording? I was just reading riddles in the dark alongside and some sentences in the book were different than from what tolkien reads here. well, at least one sentence and some words too. I was reading from the 1991 paperback version.
the Riddles in the Dark chapter was revised to bring it into line with The Lord of the Rings. I'm not sure when, I think it says in the preface to LOTR or the Hobbit
In the first editionpf THE HOBBIT, Gollum promises the Ring as a prize if Bilbo beats him; when he can't find the Ring, he offers to show Bilbo the way out instead. According to Tolkien, this was the story Bilbo originally told Gandalf to explain how he got the Ring. The "real" story shows up in the 3rd edition of the book; both versions of it are referred to by Gandalf in LOTR.
"Since I am sitting comfortably at home and have not the danger of being eaten to disturb my thinking." then what worries me most particularly is - "what have I got in my pocketses?" and what happens next. Oh yes I know but it's not the same...
out of all the voices of Gollum i've heard, in the different movies and videos games. Andy Serkis's is actually the closest and the way he says gollum in his throat too. his voice isn't exactly like tolkien's obviously and he does less of the ssssssssss-ing, but it's still a lot closer than others.

Well its now official, the movie of 'The Hobbit' will be directedby Guillermo del Toro who made Pans Labyrinth, in 2010 and will be produced by Peter Jackson.
we are reading the hobbit in my lit class- its a cool book, we are on chapter 9! i liked this chapter! this and chapter 9 are the best in the book. thanx for posting
lol it takes me about 2 hours to read each chapter, and our teacher said we could listen to it on tape, but the tape is 16 dollars and i didn't want to pay 16 dollars, so i was going to see if there was a way to listen to it for free online:) but i think i'm just going to skim it and use spark notes! lol
maybe you should learn how to read...it's not really that hard at all. And, anyway, if you don't like the book, then why are you checking it out on this site?
Wow, I've never heard Tolkien's voice...thanks for posting this. It's always wonderful to hear the author read his work...only he/she knows how the characters should really be.
There will be a movie on 'The Hobbit' once the legal dispute is over. Hopefully sooner rather than later, as long as its well made and sympathetic to the essence of the spirit of the book.
J.R.R Tolkiens reading is FANTASTIC, his development of Middle-Earthien lore is forever in my mind as one of the MOST FANTASITC WORKS of all time no IT IS the most fantastic work of all time, ALL HAIL J.R.R.TOKIEN, and Middle Earth!!!!
this is magical.

Have u lied? Have u stolen? Jesus said if you look at a woman with lust you have committed adultery with here in your heart. have u done that?
If God judge’s u by the Ten Commandments will u be innocent or guilty? Heaven or Hell? Does this concern you?
Do u need a Savior from your sins? And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment:

lol it takes me about 2 hours to read each chapter, and our teacher said we could listen to it on tape, but the tape is 16 dollars and i didn't want to pay 16 dollars, so i was going to see if there was a way to listen to it for free online:) but i think i'm just going to skim it and use spark notes! lol

maybe you should learn how to read...it's not really that hard at all. And, anyway, if you don't like the book, then why are you checking it out on this site?

erg! i have a learning disorder, and it takes me forever to read. stop being sarcastic. i had to read the book for school.

Somehow this voice really suits Tolkien. I can really connect this voice with my image of him.

Wow, I've never heard Tolkien's voice...thanks for posting this. It's always wonderful to hear the author read his work...only he/she knows how the characters should really be.

I don't like your language Harutetc. The books will always be wonderful, but if the films are made well, like LOTR were then its fine by me.
Any way there will be a hold up in making of the hobbit as the Tolkien Estate is suing New Line Cinema for not paying a fee owed to them.

there is no movie on the hobbit

There will be a movie on 'The Hobbit' once the legal dispute is over. Hopefully sooner rather than later, as long as its well made and sympathetic to the essence of the spirit of the book.

theres also the animated version however that doesnt compare with the book, and btw gullermo del toro will be directing the hobbit

I know, the animated version was poor.

It's wonderful to hear his actual voice.

I saw in the documentary that Ian McKellen tried to attempt to imitate Tolkien in his depiction of Gandalf. He did quite a good job, in my opinion.

yeah, I noticed that too when I was listening to Tolkien reading a part from the Shadow of the Past chapter.

Ahhh...The voice of the master himself. Just imagine if they had recorders back in Shakespeare's time.
Nebmancer 4 years ago 18
He was one of the greatest minds of his century. The literary world would not be the same without him.
