  • this is magical.

  • Funny hearing Tolkien impersonating Gollum... :-)

  • A genious...!

  • Who's ROwling?

  • Tolkien's Gollum voice is amazing.

  • @standingontruth1 ive done all of those things. Fortunately for me there has never been a single shred of evidence for the existence of a god or afterlife.

  • I would pay $200 for a Lord of the Rings Trilogy audiobook by Tolkien

  • @PoetsLight I might pay 500 for that....

  • @PoetsLight I think you can get one on itunes for about 30 or so. I don't know if it's the entire book but I know it does have him singing the bend the forks and crack the plates song. You might want to check that out

  • Wait, wait, wait... how do you dislike this? Not, seriously, how in the name of all the Valar can you dislike this? IT'S THE VOICE OF TOLKIEN HIMSELF!!!!!!

  • I wonder if theres a complete recording where Tolkien reads the entire book from beginning to end?

  • one of the best scene in The Hobbit

  • thums up if you needed to reed the book for shool

  • @bennson13 thumbs up if you read on papyrus (reed paper....)

  • @bennson13 what grade r u in and what shcool

  • @slim11shady0123 im from belgium so it works different in shool their aint grades ! I tink

  • One other comment You said at the end of your comments "Why you would doubt it is beyond me?" I have to say this. If I believed everything that people say on the internet, people that I don't know and about the provenance of something I have no way of checking out I would be in deep trouble. For instance I have studied Egyptian history for many years and if I had a dollar for every incorrect comment I have read I would be a wealthy woman. I definitely wasn't trying to impugn anyone's character.

  • My apologies! I was sure I read somewhere that he didn't read/record his own works. And I also thought it sounded like Rob Inglis. Someone else e-mailed me and said he didn't think it was Rob Inglis so I stand corrected all the way around. AND I am so thrilled to know that it IS Professor Tolkien. I also agree with everyone who has said how exciting it is to hear him! I am going to go back and listen with new ears. Thanks for setting me straight!

  • Yah I like it I'm in lord of the rings wen my dad read it to me

  • His voice is so...soothing...I can just let go of every distraction here, by my laptop, and just get lost in his voice and brilliant work.

  • Come on people............this is NOT Tolkein it is the fabulous British actor Rob Inglis who has done a gazillion readings of The Hobbit and LOTR. Also his voice is the voice you hear on any of the readings on the LOTR Extended cut DVD. When for instance Peter Jackson is talking about how they decided on the location for the Dead Marshes (actually built it in the car park at Stone Street) Rob Inlgis is reading from Two Towers the description of the Dead Marshes. Please do some reasearch!

  • @muffin6369 I don't know, the merchandise says Tolkien.

  • @muffin6369 Ok; I've looked up Rob Inglis and I can confirm that this isn't him, or at least it doesn't sound like him. The audio for his version is much better. Still I do have a hard time believing this was Tolkien too. He spoke in a very proper english that made him hard to understand, especially when you hear his interviews.

  • @newaver64 Since I don't have those tapes, care to explain?

  • Comment removed

  • @newaver64 I mean, why was Tolkien's voice different here than in his other recordings?

  • Comment removed

  • WOW this is a real gem! I only wish the good professor had read the whole book for us to enjoy on Youtube!!!

  • There isn't nearly enough audio of Tolkien reading his works.

  • "its like listening to an angel."

  • Did Tolkien read the whole book? Or any of the other books? I'd like to hear them in their entirety!

  • @jonnyATchantry yes.i totally agree with you.

  • Gollum is Welsh!

  • Here is a riddle for you all: "Twenty red men stand on a wooden cliff,

Their company is diligent and stiff."

The master spekas in such a fantastic tone without coming off as theatrical. It is more like a father reading a bed time story. It is very relaxing.

  • Whoever did Gollum's voice for the cartoon must have heard this reading!

  • I wonder if c. s. lewis ever did something like this before!

  • It's strange, but sometimes you can hear Gandalf in his voice:D

  • @JARHuygebaert

:) yes, i heard that Ian McKellan listened to Tolkien read for a long time, and tried to literally copy his way of speaking in order to play Gandalf. So I guess you and Ian agree!

  • fascinating that he changes his voice completely when he speaks as Gollum, to the point where he comes very close to Andy Serkis' portrayal in the movies..

  • Flummoxed! WHere's the next part? Altogether an amazing work of art.

  • He makes JK Rowling same very mediocre :)

    A true legend....

  • is it just me or does he sound like a wizard?

  • @miketokles Funny you should say that; Ian McKellen, who played Gandalf, actually based the way he spoke in the LOTR films on the way Tolkien speaks himself.

  • did he ever do the entire saga? It would be epic to be able to hear him read through all The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings

  • @zikten that would take ages to listen to.

  • He reads very emotionally. Like grandparents read to their grandchildren. Simply magical. Tolkien speaks to us behind all those years. Rest in peace John

  • Wow! Tolkien's Gollum voice is creepy!

  • "Sometimes he took a fancy for fish from the lake, and sometimes neither goblin or fish came back." Good line.

  • Tolkein was the starting point of my writing and imagination. Indeed he is among my favorite authors. To hear J.R.R. Tolkein recite his own words is incredible. Thank You for posting it. I continue to return to his work to this day.

  • I saw some spelling errors and grammar errors in The Hobbit, but thats his editors fault, J.R.R Tolkien is still the worlds most greatest author anyway!

  • @TheBioBuilder In a world of computers and automatic spell check you still see an overabundance of spelling and grammatical errors, it's a true wonder how this man wrote such a genius literary work of art with only ink, pen and paper. The best he could of possibly had back then was a dictionary, but in the spur of inspiration who has time to consult a dictionary? We must grasp our inspiration quickly, put it to paper as fast as possible before we lose it forever.

  • @TheBioBuilder Many 'mistakes' were intentional. He used "further" instead of "farther", "elves" and "dwarves" instead of "elfs" and "dwarfs" etc. He deliberately used grammar and the spelling of many words idiosyncratically to suggest a rhythm and mindset to the reader. The first time The Hobbit was printed the publisher corrected all his 'mistakes', and it took him 3 more editions to correct them (most of them) back to the intended version.

  • @wren1024 I like those mistakes elfs and dwarfs sound stupid and i use further alot lol

  • @TheBioBuilder

Guys you really should use dictionaries more often. Just check one. There are good English dictionaries. I have an Oxford

  • @wren1024

I suppose you're an English speaker?! Why are you trying to be so smart not knowing a shit of English grammar? I am not English but I can use a dictionary to see if it's a mistake or not. All your comment is useless.

  • @vovka8308 Again, his grammatical mistakes were intentional. He fought with the publisher to keep them even though the editors would go and correct them anyhow. He helped write definitions for the Oxford dictionary, so he knew the mistakes he was making, he just decided to use them under a sense of artistic license. Books are art, not math. Put the dictionary down; language at its best is not a prescribed formula, or else everyone would read microwave instruction manuals for fun.

  • @wren1024

Ok, maybe, but I know that both variants are now in Use in English and are not considered mistakes even in the Standard Language.

  • Tolkien, one of the true masters of fantasy. There will never be another like him.

  • I love tolkien and this book, it`s so cool when he plays gollum!! brilliant find

  • such a good book iv read the hobbit and im on the fellowship

  • This is one of the coolest books i've ever read.

  • I'm rather supprised that the film portrayed gollum the way Tolkien appearantly wanted him to be portrayed.

  • Hands down my favorite author...I can read through the series and by the time i'm done, i can start over and read it again. Amazing to hear him read his own work!

  • I used to have this on cassette, but I accidently recorded over it. Thank you so much for uploading this.

  • its nice

  • This is an unforgettable chapter

I remember reading it when i was younger

  • To write a book, a world so full of creatures, culture and history is trully remarkable. Cristopher Tolkien could try to gather all of his father's notes and make books with them, and yet a lot would be missing. Both notes writen in papper and what lied in JRR's mind. The chapter's name itself is well thought and created. That world you love and imagine was real. It was real inside the mind of a genius.

  • One word: Legendary! Nuff said :)

  • its really brillant to hear a section of one of the best books be read by one of the greatest authors of all time

  • Same here 'dow2961', first time i've ever heard his voice. Awsome chapter riddles in the dark....Imagine a Audio book lotr read by JRR Tolkein....ah well we can only dream..

  • Thanks for posting these. This is there first I've ever heard his voice. Tolkien really is the best!

  • The greatest author of all times.

  • I am currently reading The Hobbit, great book, I suggest you read it

  • @Kenny6676 I'm reading it too:)) and in school we got to perform some kind of play on riddles in the dark

  • damn, i must have the revised edition. I just strated this chapter and it's different from he's reading.

Mine started with: when bilbo opened his eyes

  • he doesn't read the whole chapter here.

  • yah i finished the book last week. I figured that out in about 10 minutes.

  • wow, he is a great reader. it would be so sweet if you could get an audiobook from itunes.

  • Omg I have this on CD it came in this wicked ass Hobbit edition with maps and postcards and a pocket sized hordcover of the hobbit.

  • did you know in most of stphen kings novels, the master of horror always makes remarks on tolkiens booksand characters. i think king was a fan of tolkiens work.

  • He was. He states that if he hadn't already been into the writing of the horror genre when he read Lord of the Rings for the first time, he would have been a fantasy writer, but if you read The Stand, his Dark Tower books and stuff, they are all tribute to Tolkien. Don't think there is any writer who isn't influenced by the great Tolkien!

  • I couldn't help but hearing diddly cold.

    lol.

But otherwise - awesome. Good to hear the grandmasters voice.

  • I cant believe I'm actually hearing this(: (: this man is a LEGEND and none will ever become greater than Tolkien.

  • giglibau, your exaspirating right

  • wow his voice is exsactly how i would imagine it

  • Thanks dude for this awesome recording... it is so incredible to listen him reading the book!!

I wish I had the complete tapes, to read while listening....

    xD

  • Nice i love these stories

  • I love hearing him read!

    Incredible!

  • One week ago, I had to play Gollum (I love him!!!) and that was quite funny, especially the "Is it nice my preciousssss? It it juicy? is it scrumptously crunchable" part ^^

  • Nobody can discribe the scenes in a book better then the author himself/herself. And Tolkein was truly an amazing author, no exceptions

  • He sounds a bit like Brother Theodore at times.

  • I hate brother theodore's gollum he sucks at it. Andy serkis' version is better.

  • remember watching the movie on disny and it scared the shit out of me but after a few years i relly like the movie

  • hobbit-o's, hobbit-o's, they're scrumptously crunchable!

  • Best book I've ever read.

  • So nice to hear the great master himself! Material like things must be saved for the future!

    Respect for uploading this (:

  • I had to play Gollum in a reader's theater.

I sounded just like him too!

  • i love this book my dad used to read it 2 me ages ago, i must hav been about 6 :)

  • lol, Sounds like Gollum is in the same art-kind as Yoda :D

    Sounds like that anyway :P

  • love the hobbit

  • The part when he talks like Gollum are so nice :)

  • The fact that this is online is one of the reasons I love the Internet.

  • i didn't know that. then again, I couldn't figure out that riddle when my english teacher in class because im an idiot

  • true, everyone knows that and it is crappy

and you're right, even thou I LIKE Harry Potter Rowling DOES have nothing on Tolken. I signed up when I was going through a Potter obsessed phase

  • an aging human. duh. that isn't a good riddle.

not that i would expect better from a crappy harry potter fan. rowling has nothing on tolkien

  • thats from oedipus rex...and is man

  • I always love hearing authors read their own works, but Tolkein is by far...I can't even...gah, I love Tolkein.

  • @plaidpantsglory neither can I ... Ugh... oof... yay... Cool!

  • This is just too great to comment. It's a pity that you omitted the final riddle, though

  • Wow. I feel like Sam being told a tale by Bilbo. And I wouldn't be surprised if Andy Serkis got influence from Tolkien's Gollum voice. Perfect.

  • after hearing this, I'm nearly certain that Andy Serkis must have heard it while researching his role.

  • I was thinking the same thing as bobodonda said.

I can't wait for the Hobbit Movie to come out !

  • I truly do love hearing him read this, (the voice of the literary master!), and I absolutely LOVE The Hobbit. I deeply cherish the post.

    8)

  • how old is this recording? I was just reading riddles in the dark alongside and some sentences in the book were different than from what tolkien reads here. well, at least one sentence and some words too. I was reading from the 1991 paperback version.

  • the Riddles in the Dark chapter was revised to bring it into line with The Lord of the Rings. I'm not sure when, I think it says in the preface to LOTR or the Hobbit

  • i no i hve the bks and your right it used to be that bilbo did not leave with the ring

  • In the first editionpf THE HOBBIT, Gollum promises the Ring as a prize if Bilbo beats him; when he can't find the Ring, he offers to show Bilbo the way out instead. According to Tolkien, this was the story Bilbo originally told Gandalf to explain how he got the Ring. The "real" story shows up in the 3rd edition of the book; both versions of it are referred to by Gandalf in LOTR.

  • Great! Thanks for posting this. I never heard his voice before and he was a good reader as well as a good writer.

Cool thing that Peter Jackson's Gollum sound very much like Tolkien speaking like the character.

  • I love that Gollum, in Tolkien's reading, seems to be Welsh! :D

  • awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

"Since I am sitting comfortably at home and have not the danger of being eaten to disturb my thinking." then what worries me most particularly is - "what have I got in my pocketses?" and what happens next. Oh yes I know but it's not the same...

  • I love his accent, and his voice is so cool! <3

Thanks so much for the upload. ^^

  • I love hearing Tolkien doing Gollum's voice.

  • out of all the voices of Gollum i've heard, in the different movies and videos games. Andy Serkis's is actually the closest and the way he says gollum in his throat too. his voice isn't exactly like tolkien's obviously and he does less of the ssssssssss-ing, but it's still a lot closer than others.

  • I just bought a new digital camera that takes short movies. I'm thinking of doing a series of impressions and impersonations, and I think I might try my hand at Gollum.

  • why are you telling that to us?

  • Well its now official, the movie of 'The Hobbit' will be directedby Guillermo del Toro who made Pans Labyrinth, in 2010 and will be produced by Peter Jackson.

  • The Tolkien family could stop the movie, though, if they aren't paid the money they're owed from the last films. It's in the news.

  • we are reading the hobbit in my lit class- its a cool book, we are on chapter 9! i liked this chapter! this and chapter 9 are the best in the book. thanx for posting

    commented-rated-favorited

  • you people that actually get to read good books like the hobbit in school are so lucky. : )

  • sorry, but i really do not like this book! we are reading it for school, and it is sorta hard for me to read for some reason!!

  • well if you don't like it, why are you watching this? Not trying tobe mean but just why??

  • lol it takes me about 2 hours to read each chapter, and our teacher said we could listen to it on tape, but the tape is 16 dollars and i didn't want to pay 16 dollars, so i was going to see if there was a way to listen to it for free online:) but i think i'm just going to skim it and use spark notes! lol

  • maybe you should learn how to read...it's not really that hard at all. And, anyway, if you don't like the book, then why are you checking it out on this site?

  • erg! i have a learning disorder, and it takes me forever to read. stop being sarcastic. i had to read the book for school.

  • it says on your profile that you love reading

    wth?

  • Somehow this voice really suits Tolkien. I can really connect this voice with my image of him.

  • Wow, I've never heard Tolkien's voice...thanks for posting this. It's always wonderful to hear the author read his work...only he/she knows how the characters should really be.

  • love tolkiens books probably the best ever, and best there ever will be

  • awesome author i have read the hobbit 6 times if you can believe it usually once a year but i read it twice this year.

  • awesome author i have read the hobbit 6 times if you can believe it usually once a year but i read it twice this year.

  • It's so wonderful to hear Tolkien's voice. He really sounds like a true storyteller. Thanks for sharing!

  • awesome! thanks for posting!

  • The best author ever! The first time I've ever heard him speak.

  • me too

  • Tolkien is the MOST AMAZING AUTHOR EVER! I love hearing his voice! He is SO incredible!

  • Tolkien is so amazing!

  • I don't like your language Harutetc. The books will always be wonderful, but if the films are made well, like LOTR were then its fine by me.

Any way there will be a hold up in making of the hobbit as the Tolkien Estate is suing New Line Cinema for not paying a fee owed to them.

  • there is no movie on the hobbit

  • There will be a movie on 'The Hobbit' once the legal dispute is over. Hopefully sooner rather than later, as long as its well made and sympathetic to the essence of the spirit of the book.

  • theres also the animated version however that doesnt compare with the book, and btw gullermo del toro will be directing the hobbit

  • I know, the animated version was poor.

  • It's wonderful to hear his actual voice.

  • I saw in the documentary that Ian McKellen tried to attempt to imitate Tolkien in his depiction of Gandalf. He did quite a good job, in my opinion.

  • yeah, I noticed that too when I was listening to Tolkien reading a part from the Shadow of the Past chapter.

  • Amazing!!!

  • did you see my precious?? hahah, funny

  • J.R.R Tolkiens reading is FANTASTIC, his development of Middle-Earthien lore is forever in my mind as one of the MOST FANTASITC WORKS of all time no IT IS the most fantastic work of all time, ALL HAIL J.R.R.TOKIEN, and Middle Earth!!!!

  • Ahhh...The voice of the master himself. Just imagine if they had recorders back in Shakespeare's time.

  • He was one of the greatest minds of his century. The literary world would not be the same without him.

  • Gollum's voice is great!

  • I liked the hobbit a lot. And yeah, im pretty excited about the movie which is coming out in 2009 i think. Its gonna be awesome!

  • I heard that they are making it in two parts. The first one is coming out in 2010, the second in 2011.
