  • i had this surgery 3 weeks ago.. omg is that what they did to me?:) im having pain in my lower leg muscles, is that normal?

  • I'm having this surgery 2morrow morning. Wish me good luck.

  • I had this surgery 2 months ago and its almost unbelievable the difference between now and when I had the pain. Had serious pain for almost a year before the surgery and it was making want to jump off a fucking building.

    Life saving surgery.

  • I had debilitating sciatic pain caused by an L4-L5 herniation that I endured for a year. Also had foot drop, leg weakness, numbness, pins n needles. Finally had this surgery, and I feel it saved my life. The pain made me contemplate taking my life. No other therapy (pt, chiro, back injections, acupuncture, oral steroids, oral narcotics) worked at all.

  • @bluemanor Thats exactly where I am.

  • @Circey5519 Add vitamins and herbal supplements, yoga and inversion table. Finally thinking about surgery.

  • My left buttocks, left calf, and left ankle started hurting on 7/16/11. My surgery is on 8/8/11. 3 weeks of pain was enough for me. That sh%# hurts. I couldn't get out of bed the first week.

  • I had this done L4 L5 jul 27 and 6 days later ,no leg hip pain ,it was outpatient and they had me up walking afterwards to bathroom, incision is about an 1 " long, no stiches, just steri strips, ice it every 4 hrs, The Doc was Great and thats with a Capital G REAT !! ! i'm walking around doing the stairs , my hip does pinch sometimes when I get up or try to sit down, one word of advice stool softener, I am so glad its over and on the road to recovery

  • I just got this done today. Thanks for the video and all the comments below really helped me. I wish I would have seen this before I had the surgery though. I need to Youtube things more often. :)

  • I SUFFERED A LOWER BACK DISK HERNIATION , IT WAS DIAGNOSED TO BE L4.L5 THIS HAPPENED APPROX. 4 YRS AGO . I AM ON PAIN MEDICATION HYDROCODONE BUT STILL WITH ALOT PAIN ,,CAN ANY ONE INFORM ME OF A GOOD SURGEON IN SAN ANTONIO TX. I AM 44 YEARS OF AGE BUT FEEL LIKE 70 ....PLEASE HELP . THANK YOU.

  • @hatecopiers17

don't only look for a surgen in your city, if you want a really good doctor you should be willing to travel anywhere in the world

  • Hello anybody... I'm in the military and my whole right foot is numb and my right leg is killing me. Its been this way for a couple months now and they're still telling me the same crap they told me from the beginning. I FINALLY got an MRI and they're telling me its definitely a herniated disc. (They said slight but I'm not convinced that means anything since my foot is numb and the pain is intense). Good question Jamie, I'd like to know the same. Any advice or words of wisdom?

  • i have had severe back pain from a herniated disc on the L4 and L5 discs...wondering if anyone else has had severe sciatica before going into surgery n if it too feels relieved after the surgery...what are the weight limits after the surgery?

  • @satchumo i had a surgery on monday the 25 for hernated disc. for L4 AND L5 . im still recoverin but i can walk i feel much better. and my back much straighter then before

  • @satchumo @satchumo i had a surgery on monday the 25 for hernated disc. for L4 AND L5 . im still recoverin but i can walk i feel much better. and my back much straighter then before

  • I had this procedure on March 4. I felt immediate relief in post-op. I had done Chiropractic, 5 months of PT and 1 month of spinal decompression (DRX-9000). All the conservative measures would not work. I feel great. I should have done this months ago. I am sticking to the plan regarding activity and weight limits for the 6 week post-op period. You will feel some muted versions of the previous nerve pain, but it is decreasing every day. 18 days out and feeling good!

  • omg im only 14 and im getting this.. L4/L5.... had sciatic pain for almost a year.. question: how much does it hurt afterwards? a lot. a little? how long does the after pain last?

  • @AyJay1127 i think it hurtd more when i had pain in the back right now my back is sore but not really pain ful i can say.. i had surgery 3 days ago. same day i left home

  • @AyJay1127 it doesnt hurt that much. i left the same day walkin u should do it i berly have 3 days recoverin feelin good more everyday ..

  • @AyJay1127 hey mate, im 17 and got this 7 weeks ago. the pain from the surgery was nothing compared to what id been feeling the previous 7 months. it was a huge relief to have it done. i was naturally worried before surgery but immediately after i was unbelievably happy. best of luck to you.

  • @MrLuy25 hey, i had the same surgery for when i was 16 (i'm 17 now) which done roughly 7 months ago.. i'm wondering what kind of sports, etc. you used to play? how's everything now? it's so rare to find anyone that's had a back-op under 20yrs of age...

  • @Quarker99 hey, i know!! i'm about 4 months out now, life is fantastic. i'm sitting for long periods of time and hopefully managing a flight from australia to europe in september (which i'm feeling positive about)

the only real sport i did was cross country running, but i used to go to a lot of rock concerts and jump around etc. which might have something to do with it, we're not really sure though because it came on gradually for me.

how are you going? did you do something to cause it?take care

  • @MrLuy25 wow that's awesome how you're feeling great 4 months post-op... i was still in terrible shape after 4 months... i'm 7months in now and i have recovered no doubt but i don't think i can run yet! i used to play a lot of cricket and that's how i ended up with the bad back...

so have you gone back to cross country yet? when i was just 4 weeks post-op i went to an LP concert under pain killers,, lol, have you gone back to any concerts yet?

  • @MrLuy25 same bro i was nervous, but after the surgery i felt GREAT and it was nothing compared to the leg pain, i didnt even take any painkillers after the surgery, i could finally sleep without taking narcotics and tylenol 4! its been about 5 months and my leg is better but still a bit stiff and hurting, it only bothers me a little. how are u doing?

  • @AyJay1127 yep, been around 6 months for me and i'm feeling good. i havent started lifting really heavy weights yet, but i just got back from a trip to france with a lot of walking and carrying a backpack, and my legs only hurt a tiny bit, and my back was so little pain it was almost just a bit of uncomfortability. plane was also annoying, but just stretching out my back helped a lot. have you been back into sports n such? i havent just because i am scared of reinjuring it!

  • @MrLuy25 yup 2 months after surgery i was playing A LOT of basketball and still am.

  • @MrLuy25 Hey i am glad you are doing well. I have surgery planned in about a month. Before surgery did your back hurt or was it just your leg? I am not finding too many people with disc problems who have pain in their backs. Most are just legs. For me its mostly lower back, buttock and sometimes leg.

  • @ApocalypticBastard8 hey, good luck my friend, don't be too scared it's an absolute relief afterwards! yep, it was hurting mainly in my lower back and leg. for me, the surgery pretty much completely eliminated that chronic lower back pain, i felt weaker and it obviously hurt from the surgery, but after i strengthened and the disc healed i was feeling much better! best of luck for the future mate i wish you a speedy recovery

  • Doctor, doctor, give me the news...

  • If anyone wants to try this to me im game!

  • I had this op yesterday for s1 l5 disc. I have been relieved of the pain immediately. It is great. the funny thing is how people can possibly believe exercise, chiropractic or osteopathy can help when you can see from this film that the disc needs to be physically removed. I went down those routes at the beginning and I think it made it worse.

  • hello i am also suffering from slip disc problem.doctor asked me to undergo microdisectomy surgery. but i refused . how was your operation and i hope you are doing well after operation...

  • whats the music? It sounds so cool

Its also a massive shame referencing youtube is kind of frowned upon...

  • @Derm1991 The music is "little sunflower" (Freddie Hubbard) performed by an italian trumpeter, Fabrizio Bosso. BTW I do not understand what you mean with the following sentence, can you please explain?

  • Comment removed

  • I'm going tomorrow to find out the results of my MRI. I've been having killer lower back pain on my left side, above my hip and a little towards my thigh, and on the top area of my butt (same side). Lots of knots in my lower back, muscles constantly feel tight. I've been prescribed Zipsor 25mg and it does okay. I can take 1000mg to 1200mg of ibuprofen and relieve the pain to. Sometimes that doesnt even work.

Curous about this surgery versus an epidural injection...

  • @fosgate3 The injections only last for awhile and take longer for you to heal from the problems. My friend has been doing the injections for a year now. I am going to have the surgery Monday morning. But the Doctors did not give me a choice between the two. My disk has gel leaking into my spine. But if they give you the option of the surgery I would go for it. Recovery time is about 6 to 8 weeks but soon after the surgery the doctors tell me that I will wake up with no more pain

  • Dr. please tell me what happen in the empty space once the nucleus pulposus is remove? Do you surgeons fill the space with any material. how is the inter vertebral friction is prevented?

  • @sebasbellani The space is filled by blood and then by scar tissue. It has not the same mechanical properties of the previous nucleus, but in some way it prevents the friction between the two vertebral endplates

  • ugh looks painful but its actually not a bad surgery at all... im 17 and had one a little over 3 weeks ago and was off all pain meds after the 3rd day

  • hi, to everyone :))

in this operation do they remove all the disc ??? ( all the nucleus puplosus??? and what about the annulus fibrosus) or only the part that is pinching the nerve?? does the annulus fibrosus close again after the surgery ????

  • @costasefrem we remove quite al the nucleus pulposus, through the small hole of the annulus where the herniated disc comes out. Someone removes only the small part pinching the nerve, but in my opinion this can be cause of recurrences. I do not close the annulus after surgery.

  • @66blades66 thanks a lot ))))

  • @66blades66 isn't there gonna be a spinal imbalancment , and wont the two vertebrae came closer or even touch one the other, because we are gone have one less disc , 1 less shock absorber ???? so we are gone be shorter ??? I have a L5-S1 disc herniation and i'm thinking about this operation ....

  • I am 18 and I´m getting this soon...I´m reaaaaaaaally scared!

  • I have had this same procedure just over a year ago, back pain was so severe 9 weeks of morphine did not help, I was up walking within 5 hours of surgery pain was gone, did not want any pain meds after surgery.Thank god for surgeons that are willing to do this so called simple procedure. I have never felt pain like that before and I was willing to try anything at any risk for relief.

  • @jmoar5: video on YouTube are a voluntary choiche, like to watch them. I love music and my work, so I decided to mix them. You're not obliged to watch them if this is boring for you or it is of any help. My english maybe is not so good to explain what I'm doing there, but it shows what I consider a simple procedure in my hands. Please, relax and don't be' nervous, that does not help your pain, and if it can help, do sex with your partner, listening soft jazz or blues.

  • Stop already with the music. This is not something to soften up with some light jazz! Tell us what the hell is going on. Does that not make a little sense? NO PERSON in the world knows what you are doing unless they are a neuro surgeon. The reason any of us are looking at this is because we have this problem. We are not having sex with our spouse listing to your music while watching soft porn on youtube! FILL US IN ON WHAT YOU ARE DOING if you want to help.

  • I am having this surgery in September.... I too am pretty scared to say the least! But it will be worth it to be able to live without so much daily pain, and numbness in my legs! I wish you all the best luck, and pray for you...

  • I'd like to add that this is all thanks to a drunk driver who was coming off the highway and didn't stop until he slammed into my car. Bad Concussion, broken teeth, neck and back are screwed for life. I Thank god everyday that I was in that car alone.

  • I'm going in for this surgery on the 16th of next month.. I think I should stop watching these videos. I should have learned my lesson from watching both TMJ and a sinus lift days before my surgery! I'm really scared because I have a husband with MS and 2 little kids 5 and almost 4. Wish me luck!! Hope everyone that had or is having this surgery or anything else done the best of luck!!

  • @AbazaTsuk Don't worry too much, is not a really challenging surgery in the hands of a good orthopedic surgeon or neurosurgeon. You will be better, I'm sure of that. I operate on thousands of people and quite all of them stay a way better after surgery. Good luck!!! Let us know how is done after surgery

  • @AbazaTsuk There is no need to be fearful. I had mine done in January/10 on L4/L5 and was up and walking almost as soon as I got back to my bed. There was no discomfort for 2 days, and the pain that I had after that was minimal. Best wishes and here's to a speedy recovery!

  • hi there was just woundering what symptoms you had from your l4/l5 disc prolaspe. i have the same. had nerve root block injections 2 weeks ago and i feel as though ive gotten worse. i have servere pain on my right hand side back hips groin buttock and mostly around my coxis area. i feel an op is the way forward.

how are you feeling now if you dont mind me asking.

    jamie

  • @jizzo194 Sorry Jamie, I'm the surgeon, not the patient. He's going very well, and he never had pain or numbness since 2008, when I operated on him.

  • @66blades66 Thanks for your reply. Hope you dont mind me asking another question. As a surgeon would you say that this operation has differed over the past few years and if so has the success rate highered or stayed the same. cheers

    jamie

  • @jizzo194 the modern operation is similar to the traditional one, but we do a smaller skin and muscle incision. The success rate depends on the surgeon skills and the nature and position of the herniated disc. The smaller incision is correlated with an early recovery, not with the efficacy of the surgical treatment.

  • @66blades66 I am 69 yrs old & have herneated disc in L 5 & S1 for the last 12 yrs & my chiropractor says to keep away from surgery that there is no gaurentee that it will fix my problem, & that I need chiropractor care, well it hasent done any good for me in all of these years & I am considering going to see a surgeon here in Albany NY bone hospital about this surgery, Cannot take the pain & numbness any longer.

  • @COYOTE165A Did you have it?

  • i got to get this done monday, please pray for me

  • This is a Great video .

    I went through a Fenestration Microdicectomy surgery . ( L 5 right leg pain)

After the sergury i didnt had any trouble my pain was gone. then I had rest for 2 weeks & then i had a large belt which i use to ware around my back. thing went ok.. then after 2 weeks i got little pinching feeling again on my foot..(like the time before the surgery ) ............ what should i do?

  • is there any recovery of returning to the original condition

after it was operated from L2 - L4 of Spinal Column?

  • i am wanting this op and have several doctors will do it but say the chances of success are low? im really unsure what to do

  • I had an L5-S1 microdiscectomy 7 years ago. Herniation was so bad I was days (weeks at most) from a wheelchair! Woke up and had no pain for the first time in years! Going in tomorrow for another on L4-L5. Dr. claims he's never seen a third time. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! Thank you Dr. Y.R. Rampersaud - Toronto Western Hospital!

  • Hello, thanxs for posting this. I'm having surgery on the 14th of this month. I can't wait to be able to walk straight again.

  • How long is the normal recovery time and return to work average? I get my surgery the 18th (Tuesday) and he said I should be able to go back to work on July 6th. I work in a junk yard and all I do for 10hours a day is move around car doors by hand. Constantly picking them up and moving them around. Anywhere from 40lbs to 150lbs, car doors are very heavy.

  • @bmanjuice Ok brother, take your time, do not be scared, operation is very simple in the right hands, your surgeon will be able to remove your herniated disc and when you awake you will be totally free of pain. The recovery time is about 1 month, but it depends on how much you weight, which is the work's load and how strong are your abs muscles. More core strenght, better results and recovery. I suppose that for your kind of work it will takes more than 1 month. Good luck!

  • @bmanjuice

    Sorry dude

I used to pe a plumber and ther is no way will be able to do plumbing again. I am in pain every da. I AM in pain if I sit for too long and I am in pain if I stand for too long. I had surgury almost 4 years ago, yes it is better now than before I got the surgury but I I still have pain and I am afraid to do anything extreme and when I do i regret it.

  • I have to get a laminotomy and a micro discectomy this coming Tuesday. I've never had surgery before and I'm pretty scared. I'm 6ft 1 200lb 25yr old male. Mine is l5 s1 that is messed up. I have pain down my leg into my foot so bad I cry. I got diagnosed with a lumbar sprain and was prescribed vicodin

  • oh yes.. i will definitely look for some alternatives...

  • @jhobos08 good luck, the matter is your health, you have to do what you feel is better for you, your surgeon could suggest you a solution, but the choice is yours.

  • I had L4,5 microdiscectomy and it was to cure chronic sciatica owing to a herniated disc. Successful. I have to watch my back but I play soccer and mountain bike stilkl and the op was 9 years ago.

  • @johnpm14 Thanks for your comments. Like every thing in our life there are a lot of personal experiences, some good, some bad. As I already told the success of a surgical technique depends in large amount on the patient selection

  • I just had this surgery 2 weeks ago and so far, so good. I had ruptured l5/s1 and left me with fragments on my sciatic going down my right leg. The absolute worst pain I've ever felt! I still have minor numbing in a couple of toes but no leg pain. Localized general pain around where the surgery was performed but no big deal compared to the pain I was in. Still on 5lb weight restriction and I will return to work 100% week 3. I am in sales, so no real heavy lifting req. I recommend it!

  • I had a microdiscectomy and a laminactomy a year ago. I was 19 when I had it done.. And what a difference!!!! It was so bad I couldnt even walk straight! I had never experinced anything like it.

If you have a severe back problem dont wait to get surgery, the sooner you have surgery the less chance of reinjury or having a more complicated surgical proccedure!!

  • The pain from the broken discs was so intense that absolutely no RX I took eased the pain. IV Delotid was the best for that kind of pain. I made several trips to different ER's in hopes of being referred to the right dr. Finally, I found one after thousands of dollars spent, 4 full bottles of Vicodin, and lots of unnecessary pain. (PS I broke those discs helping to lift & carry a reclining sofa. Not a smart move!)

  • It's been a year for me. He only removed one disc and left one broken one in there for God only knows what reason. I have constant burning in my right leg, tingling, & have trouble walking.

I can relate to the person that said they laid on their belly for 10 days. I laid on my belly from Jan 28-March 5. I saw several doctors; several misdiagnoses which caused more problems. By the time I found the right surgeon he scheduled me in for emer. surg. for the next day! HORRIFICALLY PAINFUL INJURY

  • Hello every body. I've been through this surgery twice, 2002 and 2005, I'm 5.7 feet tall and weight 142 pounds, skinny guy, the only sport that helped me a lot was swimming, and if I may say, I'm on competion level; my point is: if you don't have a titanium new disc or if your disk was not removed DO NOT attemp to lift dead weight or any other force that have to be supported by your lower back, you an go to the gym but e very carefull how you lift the way and how much weight you are lifting

  • I actually had my roomate wake me up for my meds. It was great. Fever went away the next morning.

Day4- Lots of pain while moving around or repositioning in bed. Stayed up the whole day, but I started noticing the leg pain was coming back. Not as bad or intense but a mental note for now. I also started working my left foot and calf out doing stretches to try to regain the feeling and I'm keeping it warm with a blanket heater.

Nite4-I was having anxiety or shortness of breath.

  • DAy3-Continued.....I lost feeling in my left foot and buttocks and was rapidly getting worse. I was rushed into surgery to prevent further damage and the surgeon did all three disc areas.

Day3- I felt great right out of surgery. I slept a lot bcuz I didn't get any before for 3 days. No pain at all. Couldn't even tell they cut me open.

Nite3- Started to feel pain with a fever but the drugs were helping. I was on 10 MG Norco and Soma. Woke up every couple hours.

  • DAY 1- I went to ER due to back pain in lumbar area. Theyn gave me a shot of morphine/steroid.

Day2-Pain went away but from the back of my butt to the back of my knee in the left leg I was in the worse pain of my life all of a sudden. Went to E.R. they prescribed pills. Went home called an ambulance and went to another E.R. They did an MRI.

Day3-MRI revealed 3 blown discs that penetrated the Dura Spinal Cord Sac and I was transferred to another hospital.

  • I had this done 3 days ago....and if you're expecting to be pain free, then you're way out on limb. You will not be 100 percent pain free. It will relieve Sciatica pain though and that is the worst there is. I have 3 ruptured discs and 2 of them punctured the Dura (Spinal Chord fluid sac). If you do this procedure...the operation itself doesn't hurt and day 2 you will be wondering if you feel worse. Just don't do nicotine. If you do that then your a dumbass and you won' t heal correctly.

  • I'm having this procedure done in November it's been 6 months since my disc prolapsed and at one point the pain was going but then after knocking it it came back making me unable to walk. I'm taking high doses of morphine aswell as other tablets to control it but since I had the injection the pain has worsened. I just want to be pain free and have my life back!

  • I have a slipped disc bet L4 and L5, and between L5 and S1. I am doing some fisio along with some electropuncture, I feel that my lower back is going trough an evolution, and there are things happening randomely in. I feel better and better, but not significantly, as the discomfort is most of the times in there. If I have to give a mark to the pain ranging from 0 = inexisting pain, and 5 worse pain, I would give it anywhere between 1 and 2.5. Most of the times it is some type of discomfort.

  • It has been one year that I stopped lifting, in order to get this resolved. I would like to get back to the gym, pain free, and able again to squat and deadlift. Any opinion, suggestion would be helpful. Thank you.

  • This music makes the video. I'm having this procedure done on july 20th. Wish me luck. I'm a fitness instructor/personal trainer and I've been lying on my stomach on my elbows for about 10 days straight now. I can only walk for a short time. The pain is relentless and excruciating. This has waxed and waned for months. Time to bite the bullet. PLEASE BE SUCCESSFUL!!! Cross your fingers for me....

  • And yes, my impingement was on my sciatic nerve to answer that question lower down on the page. My pain was down the back of my right leg which felt like I was overstretching that muscle in gym class or something like that,, firey,, and hurt all the way down to the tip of my toes. It also hurt alot in my back too. I still have some recurrent nerve pain down my leg, and my low back just always aches, but it is managable for the most part. HOpe this helps anyone about to get this done.

  • I had this done in 2005. I was on narcotics for 11 weeks where my surgeon told me 7 weeks was average. It was instant relief when I woke up from surgery. However, I still suffer from chronic back pain. It is not as bad as it was before this surgery. I became an addict to oppiates because they sent me to a pain clinic and all they do is give you narcotics. I am off them now, and I manage my pain ok. I would recommend this though, because I feel better now than I did before thats for sure.

  • Brian, so sorry to hear that. How dreadful for you! My pain was actually down the back of my left leg caused by the L4-L5 disk, and I guess I was lucky... But I have heard actual 'back' pain can be much harder to deal with. Best of luck to you!

  • I had this exact surgery last year, except my insicion ended up about an inch and a half, not 2.5 cm. Anyway, I'm doing just great and it's so wonnnderful to be out of pain! Thanks for posting this, I always wondered what it looked like,

  • my sisters getting this done how long does it take to recover from this surgery thanx jo

  • The recovery time was a little longer than I was told. Bottom line, I was out of work for 2 1/2 weeks, no lifting for 6 weeks, and it took probably 2-3 months for the full recovery. Good luck to your sister!

  • 2 1/2 weeks who are you trying to kid. 12 weekes i was of work. 2 years on and i still suffer back pain. I dont believe you ever recover from this illness

  • This is very true! Not everyone has a wonderful recovery. I had the procedure done 8 wks ago. At wk.4 leg pain/burn reoccured. A small percentage of patients will develop epidural fibrosis (scar tissue around the nerve) or possible reherniation. And once u have a back problem u always do. You will ALWAYS have to be careful with lifting/pushing/pulling. This surgery is not a miracle cure. :-(

  • Is this the sort of operation they tend to do if this is interfering with the sciatica nerve?

I think this maybe what i have to have done

  • Yes it is

  • This seriously looks like a hack job and has me scared for microdiscectomy surgery lol.

  • hack job? 45 minutes are enough to let the patient stay better... don't be scared... She's now running, swimming, doing every kind of sport she wants (including make love ;-), and working as before the hernia. She's happy...

  • Thanks for some confidence but I guess for the surgeon they do have to spread apart the skin suck up the blood move the muscles aside.. So i guess it all looks hacked lol.. I go for surgery Jan 15th less then week now.. Been watching too much shit so ill stop and go in knowing ill be fine.. If Joe Sakic can get back surgery and return to professional hockey then we are all good to go and there is hope.

  • Alright Diggy, just noticing you were in for surgery recently, how are you getting on now? I go in for this mid-march and looking at that video is pretty unsettling. apparently, there's 3 months of no gym after the operation :(

  • This is incredible, to anyone who is considering this surgery, seek alternatives. I had a microdisectomy on my L2 and L4, I was told to go out and live a normal life, strengthen my back ya ya ya, guess what out of nowhere I have the same disks reherniated. SEEK ALTERNATIVES!!!

  • @imshort141 For herniotomy both macro discectomy and microdiscectomy are appropriate, as long as surgeons have mastery of the procedures. A review of the literature reveals success rates for lumbar discectomy ranging from 80-96%. The outcome of lumbar discectomy does not appear to be affected by the use of a microscope and depends more on patient selection than on surgical technique. So, dear friend, please do not scream to seek alternatives, suggest to find a skilled surgeon.
