I prefer wired simply because I get less lag on xbox live if my network is purely ethernet
it could be different for everyones setup, and I know wired networks can be messy but only if you're unorganized, just hide the cable runs under your floor, in a wall or whatever, you wont see most of it and usually you have alot of wires behind your computer anyway so its not a big problem, also I find that ethernet is more reliable and quicker to setup
I thought like this as well until I tried wireless. It's not a big deal until you have a laptop and want to go anywhere in the house to use your network. I have an i7 desktop with an SSD....I don't use wireless for that....but for the laptop, it is unbelievable!

Yeah I know, wireless networks on laptops are amazing if setup right, just as long as you're not using them to share your internet connection
I find that its better using an ethernet autoswitcher in that case :)
