I do something like this. I call it an inverted flam six stroke roll and I play it R(l)llrrl repeat. Or an inverted flam 9 stroke which R(l)llrrlR(l)ll repeat.
@darthjoey13 If you mean your playing a right handed flam (ghost left, accent right) to make the pattern lR LLRRL I can see that working and am going to try it next time I'm at a kit. That makes more sense to me cos otherwise you'd be playing 3 lefts in a row which is awkward. Either way, thanks for the inspiration.
"Please this lick is not a toy, so use it well". That's not only a hilarious statement, but it defines what this "Lesson" is all about. He's just showing players that know how to play it, how to play it in more then one way and not get carried away with playing it in one way and ruining it for everyone!
I'm not bashing any one who uses this lick (especially Todd), but why does this even have a name and history behind it? It's just a swiss flam drag... Again not criticizing, just wondering.
@WGIfan I think it's because some of these hybrid rudiment stuff are used only for snare drumming. So I guess the history was just who are the ones that applied it to the kit and made the lick famous. No idea where the name came from, just that it's like a onomatopoeia way of naming it.
@WGIfan also licks, at least in the drumset world (dunno about drum corps) are much more than what's written on the page. the history and stylistic approach make it much more than a sterile "swiss flam drag."
"However you wanna stick it"....Hmm. Todd is a cool down to earth, bad ass drummer. Sucherman, seems very genuine to me. I love his sense a humor. Drummers, need to check their egos and find a sense of humor. Even Thomas Lang said he don't take himself seriously, yet he's serious about the craft.
You are a great player and a lousy teacher. All your videos are just you showing off under the pretense of demonstrating a lick. If you are going to teach it.....then teach it. Don't just play it a thousand miles an hour.
@gitchigoomi this is taken from his DVD as a promotion. At the beginning of the DVD he teaches all of the stickings properly, and then in this section demonstrates how to use them. If you bought the DVD you'd see he's a fantastic teacher
@gitchigoomi ...I get what you are saying ...but I think this clip assumes that the listener already knows how to play the lick ...that the listener already knows the sticking of the blushda lick .... thus , he is not there to show you how to do the lick , rather he is showing people two things ... one , the pitfalls of the lick ... two , some variations and potentials of the lick
@gitchigoomi I agree with you about him being a lousy teacher. But he is not teaching, he is giving his interpretation of the lick and how it should be used. Just saying. Not looking for an argument.
@Tristnator4 I feel like even then you couldn't judge him as a teacher because you aren't having like a one on one with him where his goal is actually to TEACH, you know? I can say, after watching a lot of this DVD I have learned more about playing drums, both in being a better musician and learning some amazing new sticking ideas, than from a majority of the teachers I've had. You have to do a lot of work yourself too to make the most of his DVD I think..
@Tristnator4 well yourve found one with this nonsense statement how the fuck is he a lousy teacher?maybe you just dont get it but to me this guys not only a great player but an equally great teacher what more do you want?
@gitchigoomi He's demonstrating it in context. Besides, I have eyes and I can clearly see what he is doing and how he is playing the licks. Use your senses to figure it out! The good teachers are ones that DON"T teach you step by step like the viewer is a baby
lol,his interpretation of the lick is just epic.

Some people should never attempt to teach anything regarding the art of drumming.
Todd is one of 'em.
What drivel.
