i have a question, i have to change my timing belt one a 2.4 kia (almost the same as the mitsu 4g63/4) the belt didn't snap but when i was inspecting it it had lots of missing teeth and as i pushed in it checking the tension it fell apart.. im wondering is it safe to turn the cams with out the belt?? . oh and for all those looking for info on KIA and Hyundai.. DON'T PAY ANY MONEY FOR SERVICE MANUALS.. THERE FREE!! kiatechinfo
you guys have it all wrong. DSM stands for Diamond Star Motors. Chrysler, Mitsubishi, and Plymouth got together back in the late 80's to produce 3 cars, one under each of their "make" names. Plymouth Laser, Mitsubishi Eclipse, and Eagle Talon. They either came with a 1.8L, 2.0 non-turbo, or a 2.0 turbo. The 2.0L motor was all Mitsubishi's design. They had been using the motor years prior to them being in these cars. The 2.0 is also known as the 4G63.
This how to video is missing the most important information for changing a dsm timing belt...dialing in the tensioner. Where's the torque spec and drill bit trick? Plus spinning the motor and waiting for the belt to settle... Come on man youre setting up folks for tensioner failures. This is a decent over view for timing marks and some other good info. People do it the way the write up on vfaq.com explains, sry bro just looking out for fellow dsm'ers.
then pull the pin and measure the pushrod projection
I do have that other special tool the MD998767, to properly tension the eccentric pulley with, but I'm a little confused on that step of the process.I do have the 2003 eclipse 2.4 SOHC but I think it is basically the same as the engine your working on except for the crank timing mark location and only one cam pulley
Great Video! I noticed that you didn't show how to properly tension the tension pulley in this video, and that you have special tool MD998738, which I have
now do I install the special tool MD998738 in place like you show on your video? then screw it in until it stops on the tension arm, or keep screwing it in until the tension arm is on top of my hydraulic pushrod that still has the pin in it?
if so, then I tension the eccentric pulley to specs, until the pin is easy to move in and out?
replaced my timing belt today, i torqued the crankshaft pulley back on with the plate that you cant have reverse, i didn't note the way the plate went on or off, how do i know if its on right? will the gap still be there between it and the sprocket if its backward, even with the bolt tightened? please help me out!
hi ... i have a stupid question, i have 4G63 but it is OHC, it is old Galant from 1998 with 2.0l 100kw i can´t find any "issue" how to replace timing belt on this engine, could you please tell my some advices please ? also sry for my english, i´m from czech shitpublick.
O thank god... im doing a build and havnt got to this point but dreaded it... Im glad i watched the video on the rods and stuff, cuz i was just gonna buy new bolts and throw them in, but i guess that would not be a good idea. u just saved me a motor i think lol :) auto student still attending building a N/A 4g63
Sounds like a plan, Ill get one up here this week. Until then, we do have a nice tech article on the site with about 10-20 or so pics. Its in the quick specs category of the site.

@MrOpoooooooooooooooo Well i have a tsi 4g63t, its made by Chrysler, Mitsubishi i believe came out with it first.. Then Chrysler copied it or something to be able to compete against Mitsu Its all on google if you wanna check it out ..
@617k122 The 4G63 is a Japanese engine. It's part of the Sirius group of engines designed and built by Mitsubishi. This includes: 4G61, 4G62, 4D65, 4G64, 4D68, etc. It was introduced to the US through Diamond Star Motors, which was a contract between Mitsubishi and Chrysler. The 4G63 has also been used by Hyundai. The Eclipse, Talon, and Laser (DSM pre-'99) is a Chrysler design making it a US Domestic. If you want more information, just ask. But don't steer the guy in the wrong direction.
@MrOpoooooooooooooooo Yea, the Evo came with the 4G63 and No -- Not Chrysler.. The 4G63 is a JAPANESE Engine Designed by Mitsubishi. The Evo had the Sirius 2 version of the 4G63 which features the opposing head. If you look at the difference, the Evo shows the cam gears on the Left and transmission on the Right. Which is opposite any other 4G63 Application. If you want more information on this, please feel free to ask.
Almost ready for the BSE Video. We are waiting for a NEW PART that we are making, which is a Aluminum Spacer that replaces the Balance shaft gear that is on the crank. It will MSRP for around $20 :) and take off 7 OZ. from the crankshaft. Great bang for buck, along with the Aluminum Crankshaft Timing Belt Drive Gear coming out in the Spring.
This doesn't even begin to demonstrate how to properly install the timing belt. This video will fuck more people up than help them.

@lawnside82 Don't turn the cams without the belt, the pistons have a chance to hit some valves, unless u know what u r doing

very informative except for not showing how to set the tension. Thats one of the most important steps.
