Well there were patches of ice on the trail, but for the most part it was crusty snow, with just enough give for me to get by with poles alone and not the spikes. Dave, W2VV used his spiky snowshoes at the summit and the whole way down. He also used his lightweight spikes on a good part of the trail up. I did not think I was sinking in enough to warrant using my snowshoes.
