I saw George and Ravi Shankar in Seattle in 1974...Dark Horse tour...yes George's voice was hoarse--even on the record, if I remember correctly. Bass player is Willie Weeks, who toured with EC and Steve Winwood in 2008-ish and inspired the band to include "Them Changes" in their performance. 1974 George Harrison tour--Willie Weeks, Andy Newmark (drums), Tom Scott, Billy Preston. Great band, great performance. So glad I saw ONE Beatle in my lifetime. Maybe I'll see Paul sometime.
I was in ninth grade and saw this tour open in Tulsa OK. My brother and I ate at the Mayo Hotel with our dates before the show and saw Billy Preston with much of Leons entourage go through the lobby. George opened with an instrumental Hari's On Tour. The show was awesome. The Ravi Shankar was a little tedious to me. The place was full of hippies smoking weed. His voice was fine that night. He started the tour in Tulsa because as George put it-it was the home a very good rock n roll piano player
This was the second rock concert that I got to see. I had my choice, I could see BTO or George Harrison. I picked George and never looked back. It was my first introduction to Indian music since Ravi did the first set. It was also the first time I saw an arena filled with pot smoke. The second set featured Billy Preston, Leon Russell, Tom Scott and a host of others, along with George Harrison. It was one of the best shows I've ever seen, including seeing Paul earlier this week.
great song but i remember something about george having terrible reviews on this tour because of his laringitous . this actually does nt sound bad to me but i do remember hearing the lp and thinking he might have been best leaving doing the vocal for a few months untill his throat healed . i still think george produced the most interesting solo material . not to detract from the others though
George wasn't hoarse from smack, as some have claimed on YouTube. That's absurd! He was forced to record the Dark Horse album immediately before the Dark Horse Tour. He got laryngitis while recording the album, which had a deadline, then started the tour. I saw him on that tour, in 1974, playing in Texas. He was hoarse when I saw him, and yes, the "Dark Hoarse" jokes started, including in Rolling Stone. He still put on an amazing concert, and this, released as a single, is still a great song.
looks like he is playing a concert size GUILD acoustic with a very expensive custom rosetta. not a very comfortable guitar, but produces maximum volume.
I remember back in the day, 1972, I met a man from Austrailia. he said I was a dark horse. It was the best compliment any one could have given me. I immediatly thought of this song when he said that.
I saw the tour in '74. Madison Square Garden Pot Pipe. Ravi Shankar was up there for ever, and when George finally played, his throat was shredded. Nevetheless, and not just for this 15-year-old, the excitement was absolutely electric, like Beatle fighting in a big heavyweight fight there, but Ravi wore us down, George was just ok, and it was a bit of a hazy bummer. cool.
amazing song. Even when its poor quality. George i love you and hope you have already blessed my life with your music and insights. You are my hero and always will be.
I have the 45 from December 1974. can't get it on iTunes! darn it!! can't get Ringo's studio version of "Photograph" only the icky live version! what is up with that?
I saw this tour. I used to have a very good cassette of the show in Tulsa but, alas, the years have lost it. Even so, I don't remember laringitis. Maybe Leon Russell's Doctor fixed him up before the show? Leon appeared at the end of the show. Rumors had Clapton on the bus but, if he was, he didn't show his face. Billy Preston was on keys. Jesus what a band. Good to see Tom Scott on flute. Great music. Ravi did an entire set too - full ensemble. They wouldn't give anyone that kind of budget now
Thank you so much for sharing. I remember the song and I had the 45 of it. Does anyone remember the flip side of the 45. He was singing and he also had lost his voice. A very interesting song. I think it was called "I don't care anymore" Wuld of loved to have gone to one of those concerts but to be honest I was about 11 or 12 but I was so into his music. Not his religion but I guess how he combined the two.
@timbrewolf1 - I was there too. I do remember Harrison's voice was in bad shape but it didn't matter as it was a great show. Was sitting behind the stage and saw Leon starting to walk onto the stage before most of the crowd did. It was fantastic.
@sooners1959 I was off to the side and saw Leon earlier than some too. Get this: My "ticket" was through a neighbor, a Tulsa cop, who drove me to the show and had me wait in the basement while he checked in and came down and opened a little known door!
I understand that the 1974 tour rehearsals took place at A&M studios in Los Angeles, where the Dark Horse label was housed at that time. This footage may be from those rehearsals.
He had Heptitus I think and the Damn Record company was pressing him to complete his LP and I think that he wasn't happy with the result.... I feel bad for him....

This is old footage around the time he first met his wife Olivia, I believe; in the 1970s. He became quite thin for a while but gained weight and looked much healthier after he was married again, stopped touring and had Dhani, his son.
he was ill from drinking Olivia made him do acupunctre and clean up his act. There is a record cover with George, covered with acupucture needles on his face

i so wish this was written before concert for bangladesh ,it would be awesome live with that collection of artists,on that grand of a stage, you go george!!!!!!!
I tink the album after this Extra Texture was his last Apple album so if you notice his greatest hits from 1980 starts in 1976 and all the videos are post that year in the DVD box as well as I think Greorges contract was with Warner and he has all the rights- so in effect it would be geat to see these videos in pristine condition- I am sure filmed the tour in 74
I remember back in 1974, having seen the shows at Madison Square Garden, George was interviewed and stated that the shows were being filmed and if they werent any good they would never see the light of day cause he owned them and would go back into his cave.
Is there a better quality version -This is a great under-rated Georeg song- got played on teh radio all the time back then- but the quality of this video is hurting -wonder if there is afull length video of this tour
I stood in line to get tickets for a whole day with my sister back in 74. The day of the concert, a blizzard came thru Ohio and the concert was cancelled!

Hey! I was at the same concert at Hofheinz Pavillion! Remember when they turned up the lights in the audience when he sang "My Sweet Lord"? What an intensely spiritual experience that concert was! God, I miss George so much!

at this time he performed, it he had a sore throat, that's why the recordings are so hoarse.
But I really love this song!!
Dark Horse is my favourite of all George Songs,
you should watch the demo version of "Dark Horse", where his voice is normal.
