Originally Hiei was going to get together with Kurama, but the artist was worried that it would flunk like his last Yaoi so he just left the two of them as friends. Then, fangirls end up pairing them anyways, poetic irony I say. Though, if you can sell me a good reason Keiko doesn't hook up with Yusuke and Yusuke gets with Hiei, I'll dig it

yes, he is both. the same things are true in the manga version. i think that the manga artist changed his drawing style, and the anime artist adopted that. course, in any case, he ruled all thru the series.
