That would have been a good thing, sure. But wouldn't Germany be far harder to defeat when only fighting on one front and having the ressources of the whole of Russia? Imagine what could have happened if all the panzers from the eastern front had lined up on the coast of Normandy... You could always just nuke them, certainly. But by conventional means, I doubt it would have worked like that.
If the Americans had waited and nazi germany defeated the soviet union then it is quite possible that the americans and british would have been defeated in europe, they struggled against the weaker soldiers stationed in france, what would they have done against the entire german army who were more expierenced with more sophisticated weapons . Also think about how many more would have died if the americans had waited .and vietnam whould have happened anyway

My understanding is that they did think they were going to be there. The carriers were on their way to berth in Pearl but were delayed a day because of weather. So, act of nature helped out on that one.
