What comes to mind when you hear the word Rasberry Swirl. Pretend its the name of a bakery. Anything come to mind...like Pinup girls covered in Food or something.
I love tori, and this was the first song I ever heard by her, still my fave.Been getting into some weird violin dubstep mixes lately, would be awesome to hear a mix up with this song to snowboard too...
To be clear, Amos herself (in an interview; Louisville Observer) has stated that "...sometimes I play the role of the man in my relationships with my female friends. I'm not talking physical; I'm talking on an emotional level. And so this is about being understanding. That if I were (a man), there's no way that these men would be able to compete. Because I think they miss the beauty in the women I find attractive..." (Taken from her biography "Pretty Good Years").
Do you think that was influenced by Spirited Away at the end, or perhaps vice versa? Not sure which came first but the gluttony turning people to pigs bit reminded me of it...
@Evilushka People (or men to be precise) were already turned into pigs way back in the Odysee, when they were feasting at the palace of the goddess Circe, who had bewitched their food.
@HappyPhantom21 The previous posts all explain it pretty well - but I'll reiterate, it is about taking and not giving back. As has often been the case, when we look at men and women. Society conditions men to freely take their pleasure from women's bodies, but can't be a man and give back. It's not just about sex either, though, but selfishness in relationships, and can also apply to non-hetero and even non-romantic social relationships I think.
Tori is a great song writer, and comparing her to Gaga is like comparing Tarantino to Orson Welles. That said, despite all her talent Amos has a lot of antimale crap inside her head so she can keep her raspberry to herself. Same goes for the blowjob, baby.
@AmbroseMugwump I disagree with criticizing her "antimale crap". It is her opinion and she's entitled to it. If a man degrades women in music, i.e. most rap, it's perfectly alright, but if a woman so much as hints at a flaw in men she's labeled as a pro-feminist bitch. If men can objectify and degrade women in their music, then women have every right to call them out on their male chauvinism shit and refuse to put up with it.
@asticklus Saying it is her opinion is irrelevant as such has no bearing on my statement about her antimale crap. It is the opinion of many that the world was made in six days, but this has no relevance on my saying that it was not. As for women being labeled bitches for pointing out male flaws this is simply not true, whereas rap - the few times that it is misogynist - gets criticized quite a bit. I think you have confused white women with black men.
@AmbroseMugwump could you give us some specific examples of this anti-male stuff? i don't consider the song here to be anti-male, i think it outlines a lot of the frustrations women have with gender power dynamics and emotional immaturity from men in situations involving sexual and social relationships, and i think it puts in an effort to put a voice to genuine female sexuality for once, but i'd be interested in hearing your side.
Well I'm a big fan of Gaga and I also really like Tori Amos. And yes, Gaga is a creative genius. I don't really see a point in comparing them. Totally. Let's enjoy the music and stop insulting others.
I listened to it again. But it's been under some discussion for years. I think most fans agree that's what it says. It definitely says something about a blowjob, and it makes sense with the song I suppose.
@GenkaiShinigami Yeah, someone had to explain this to me, too. Originally, I thought the voice said "John Travolta." =P
But I think "blowjob" is a bit inappropriate. I mean, "make her raspberry swirl"? Sounds MORE like what the John Waters movie "A Dirty Shame" termed as "sneezing in the cabbage," to me.
@christylynn I think it's just distortion of her voice, no idea what she she's saying. Maybe it's just one of her cute little groans, goes well with the track though.
@jirera28 I said it was a ripoff, didn't say it was good. and it's not my fault you've got a weak stomach, but both the songs mix piano with electronica, they allude to the same "thing" and they both involved fruit lolol
Probably Tori's most bizarre video, but a very good one nontheless. Anyone else think that the guy we first see at 1:04 looks like James Woods, the actor.
most of tori work is hard to understand but not this song the clitosis is shape like a rasberry (if you want inside her well, you better make a rasberry swirl) better go down if you want some LOL
woah...I've just seen this for the first time....I knew the song like i know all of her music....but wow...it just blew my mind....heavy stuff....great great great....
this video has many levels of creative intensity ....its seem edgy...as if breaking out of everything normal...a wild internal beast showing its side out of the cage! Love this! Toris music is eclectic!
I love this song. Been a tori fan since her 1st album came out. She is truly of the goddesses. Also, this is one of the only videos I've ever seen that shows people dancing like people actually do at parties & clubs!
I love in the dance scene when she's just belting it out in the guy's ear. "When all the boys can't be men". If more feminism was like this, the way it should be, I'd gladly jump on board.
This user (And part time troper) has heard that this is one of a few mere interpretations of the lyrics, so it doesn't have to be nausea fuel. I hope...
@GenkaiShinigami Patrick Studios Australia did THE BEST dance to this at their Showcase in 2009. It's fast becomming my favorite dance of the whole show and now I'm addicted to this song because of it.
I would start with the beginning. A familiarity with Little Earthquakes, where she comes from, is important to knowing where she goes from there... you can't fully appreciate anything that follows without the knowledge of what came first.
Since everyone seems to not recommend her last 3 albums before Midwinter Graces, I'll say something. I think The Beekeeper is amazing. It IS one of her most beautiful albums, IMO. ADP and AAtS are also wonderful. Although I do agree that LE and FtCH are good places to start. I recommend that you download all of her albums on Frostwire before buying them.
@TearInTheirHands i would recommend finding the boxed set (in the form of piano keys) A Piano - it's a great comphrehensive collection - only missing a couple of my favourites and i have bought several on eBay.com ... Karen McLovin
@TearInTheirHands I really think with an amazing example of origniality, we should promote the purchase of the album, not free downloads. The Beekeeper and Tales of an Librarian were some of her best I agree
I think you should download all of them , each one is particular. Maybe the less beautiful are the last 3, The Beekeeper, American Doll Posse and Abnormally attracted to sin, while Midwinter graces, the seasonal one, is better than they are. I think you should start from the beginning (I did so) with Little earthquakes, which is still my favourite, but I also love some songs of Under the pink and Boys for Pele and the whole cds of From the choirgirl hotel and Scarlet's walk. :)
I agree, just start from the beginning, then you can see exactly how she has progressed. I actually started with Boys for Pele, then Little Earthquakes, but if you are unsure about where to start, then start at the beginning.
Someone told me to look up Tori becuase I wont to listen to someone that is different but good. I have been listening to her on youtube and really like her. Could you please help me out and tell me what cds I schould downlaod or all of them. If all of them are good which one schould I start off with.
From The Choirgirl Hotel is a great place to start. My favourite album by far, a good mix of everything that's great about Tori. Then, if you like what you hear, just go in order. Under The Pink Little Earthquakes Boys For Pele To Venus and Back Strange Little Girls Scarlet's Walk The Beekeeper American Doll Posse Abnormally Attracted To Sin Midwinter Graces. Enjoy!
mazzam1612 has a great list and is right, start with Choirgirl first. And Little Earthquakes next. Here's my order of recommendation afterward - Under the Pink To Venus and Back Boys for Pele Scarlet's Walk Abnormally Attracted to Sin Midwinter Graces American Doll Posse Strange Little Girls The Beekeeper ^ They're all great, but that's my level of recommendation. :) Her first five albums are almost essential (especially the first two) which are Earthquakes and Pink. :)
@GenkaiShinigami get A Piano, it has several cd's and a hc book and comes in a 'piano' keys box, the only thing i wish Muhammad My Friend was included but for some odd reason, it wasn't. Enough great music to keep you happy for years ... i have bought several on eBay *sweet*molly*malone*
@GenkaiShinigami i have been to almost all in her cds and in the filming of welcome to sunny florida. Where i believe she stopped touring for skarlets walk. Anyway. i recommend to buy them all and listen to them in order so you can grow like we did. another artist that intrigues me is Bjork :) I hope you become and Ears with feet (tori's cute name for her fans)
@lizzyvance if ur new to tori u should def check out " little earthquakes " " under the pink " and " scarlettes walk " those are her best albums ... she is terrific !
@lizzyvance I would say just get Tales of a librarian so you can capture a good feel of all her different styles and albums. Then start with little earthquakes and work your way up to American Doll posse.
@lizzyvance I would say just get Tales of a librarian so you can capture a good feel of all her different styles and albums. Then start with little earthquakes and work your way up to Abnormally attracted to sin
@lizzyvance I started with Under The Pink, which was the current one at the time, and then Little Earthquakes, which was the only other full album she had out... well except Y Kant Tori Red, which is really only of value to a collector. Y Kant Tori red... Is not her best work, I'll put it that way.
The way she makes fun over the face of the man, and that she treats the kid as puppet, saying men are immature and are manipulated... "Things are getting desperate when all the boys can't be men" and Tori is an adult dancing at the club while he wants tea party.
"I am not your senorita", "In the garden I did no crime" <- Those lines are totally Genesis, and she doesn't wanna be punished with submission to men because of Eve.
Some songs by Tori I would recommend starting out with are Cornflake Girl, Spark, Precious Things, Caught a Lite Sneeze, Professional Widow, A Sorta Fairytale and Bliss to start out with. As for other artists, I recommend Björk, specifically her songs Hyperballad, Jóga, and Army of Me. Also, you should try PJ Harvey, Kate Bush (Running Up That Hill, Wuthering Heights and King of the Mountain) and Fiona Apple (Criminal and Sally's Song).
...and she must be pretty strong to just rip through that painting.

@lizzyvance Go and buy the first three in order - Little Earthquakes (best album), Under the Pink, and Boys For Pele. Those are the core collection.

@lizzyvance I would say just get Tales of a librarian so you can capture a good feel of all her different styles and albums. Then start with little earthquakes and work your way up to American Doll posse.

@lizzyvance I started with Under The Pink, which was the current one at the time, and then Little Earthquakes, which was the only other full album she had out... well except Y Kant Tori Red, which is really only of value to a collector. Y Kant Tori red... Is not her best work, I'll put it that way.

@lizzyvance oh geez all her albums are amazing in my opinion but i'd say the ones i listen to most often are:
Boys for Pele
The Choirgirl Hotel
Tales of a Librarian
Little Earthquakes
Strange Little Girls(cover songs)

LOL This video has absolutely nothing to do with the song. Oh Tori, I love her and her eccentricities.

Same here! It's also my favorite music video ever, next to Cornflake Girl (UK) and Spark.

@TearInTheirHands What? I think it has everything to do!

Love this, anyone know any other good songs by her? or by similar artists?
ihaveashed 2 years ago
Some songs by Tori I would recommend starting out with are Cornflake Girl, Spark, Precious Things, Caught a Lite Sneeze, Professional Widow, A Sorta Fairytale and Bliss to start out with. As for other artists, I recommend Björk, specifically her songs Hyperballad, Jóga, and Army of Me. Also, you should try PJ Harvey, Kate Bush (Running Up That Hill, Wuthering Heights and King of the Mountain) and Fiona Apple (Criminal and Sally's Song).

It is! <3 My favorite video and song by her. :) I'll admit, I seem to like her better from LE - TVAB. But I love all her music either way. :)
