  • stem direction is really really confusing.....!!! :(

  • If and when i finish your lessons, will i be able to write my own music??

  • Andrew thank you for unselfishly sharing your knowledge! I like the way you teach, very easy to understand..also you are entertaining :) that's why I have been able to learn from you... when you go to heaven and God asks you what have you done to help others this is going to be on your list :D..thank you again and take care!!!

  • Helping me a lot...Thanks

  • Dude you are THE BEST, thank you so much for these videos. you've expanded my abilities 10 fold, and you've opened countless doors for me. If you were a woman i would love you long time.PEACE !

  • You're awesome. Thank you for doing this!

  • QUESTION ABOUT STEM DIRECTIONS: What happens if you have two notes the same distance above the middle line and another note below the middle line ( and they're all connected) but the one note below is further from the middle line than the ones above- which one 'wins' then? Does the ordinary direction of the bottom or top stems predominate?

  • @stephennesbitt2000 i think the stems will go up, but im not sure, so dont take this as fact

  • I am having trouble watching these videos, some of them like #1 and #13 I can see the video, but #2 and this one I can only hear his voice, I REALLY hope its just something weird going on with YouTube right now, because I have looked for a LONG time for intro Theory Video lessons!

  • I definantly appreciate you taking time out of your day to post these videos. I've always wanted to learn music theory but I myslef don't have the time or money to do it right now and since I have a computer i'm going to sit here, countless hours of the day and learn my hardest.

  • Your humor scares me... but your knowledge and generosity are admirable and... awesome. Thanks! :D

  • Haha, you're silly, but it's fun to watch ^^

  • i changed my mind and decided to watch all the videos cuz its good review

  • @lypur Im sorry sir, I have one doubt. On the grand staff, what should be stem's direction if you have a central C by itself?

  • I'm very distracted by your gorgeously spikey hair, but otherwise, brilliant videos!

  • Homework :P This is homework because I'm at home. lolz.

  • It's really admirable of you to have spent so much time to make this info available (and totally comprehensible) to people who can't afford a teacher or don't have the resources in their backyard to learn this stuff. I commend you!

  • Great lesson, I’m in(I sub), BTW, I noticed that you’re a Canadian by two things

    1-your eyes

    2- the word OUT

    :)

  • A note with a stick lol. You are entertaining and yet very informative

  • Thank you for graciously sharing your knowledge! You are Youtubes loveable music geek.

  • just remember for the notes. d's and p's NOT 9's or b's. think about it.=)

  • OH NOOO THE DREADED MIDELINE

  • You're a good theory teacher. I can tell you know your stuff. I'm taking my ABRSM theory exam (grade 3) and I needed some info on stems and also beaming. Do you have anything covering the rules for beaming in different time sigs? Beaming, IE connecting eighth notes etc.

  • I have a question this is only for piano...? coz im tryin to learn how to make orchestral music and write symphony's

  • @Turkestra standard notation applies of every occidental instrument, this is fundamental if you want to with symphonic stuff

  • @Turkestra no it applies to any instrument

  • Thank you so much, I now understand sheet music a lot better. I'm going to keep following along until I become a great pianist. I just hope you keep making videos because I'll be really sad once I get to the end of them.

  • Here's A Little Tip To Help With The Note Stem Direction, I Found Useful:

If You Always Draw The Note In An Anti-Clockwise Direction, The Stem Will Be On The Correct Side

  • "Really easy to follow along" as I look at my bass drum music and see splitting 32nd notes.

  • i can't think of giving up in this lesson, plus i have a cute teacher :P

  • i don't do the homework :P

  • A circle with a stick. Lol

  • This guy is in love with numonic device and anlogie as for the the 16th note an inch is oft time cut into 16 parts

  • i play guitar but i don't know how to read music, just play the chords, strums ect. I always thought learning theory will be hard, but after watching ur vids, i think that reading it is quite easy. I downloaded many music theory courses, it confused me more. U r an awesome teacher! U r talented as well :D ur students r really lucky.

  • As a percussionist I can say. If you don't know this......you're screwed

  • thanxz, i have always played by ear, and written and produced by ear.

    i am hoping i can follow your amazing lessons.;

really appreciate you taking the time out to help me and others to understand the maths of music. i never understood it at school , but you make it simple, thanxz again,

  • What if there are four eighth notes, and two of those eighth notes are above the middle line, while the other two of those eighth notes are below the middle line? Which way would the stem face then? Other than that, this was great video and very helpful! Thank you very much! :)

  • oh no! the dreaded middle line! :))

  • i love your goaty and hair dude! I want it!

  • It is getting a bit harder but I will persevere because it is fun and so convenient to study at home at my own time and pace for free with a humorous, generous teacher who knows his stuff and obviously loves teaching music!

  • Thank you for today's lesson, Teacher. :)

  • Thank you so much for this am enjoying to learn! You are a good teacher. so far :) really great

  • When i search for sheet music or music notes, in none of them do the stems go downwards? Is this a western/canadian/french style or universal? That when notes ontop of the B line note are drawn the stem has to point downwards and vice versa for lower than B notes? Hope for an answer from anyone soon :) Sincerely, Liam :)

  • There's something very warm and human about the way he teaches.

  • There's something very warm and human about the way he teaches.

  • hey andrew! i just wanted to thank you for taking the time and effort to teach this course. people dont understand that music theory is the road map to playing music. why waste your time trying to play an instrument by ear when you could just learn a bit of theory and be gooood? Anyway, you rock! keep it up!

  • @internaldb But at the end of each day (*if you do your homework) you have a little less to learn.(At least when it comes to learning the theory, applying it is the real trick)

  • I don't understand the "debate" : if you are serious about music you cannot do without theory - at the very least the basics as provided in this course. And like with everything you may be serious about, it takes time, patience, repetition, perseverance.

  • thanxz lypur, for classical music i agree

, but pop music , most if not all music producers i have worked with, dont read music.

i love your lessons and for me as a professional songwriter/producer, this is a first for me to be able to read music, thanxz

  • thanxz, very helpful!!!

to the person whos wants to know if you need to know any music theory for music production, no you dont! if you can play the keyboard by ear and can programme then thats all you need.

music theory is for those who just want to learn the maths of music.

if you learn the basic notes and are blessed with natural talent you will be able to play an instrument without learning all music theory,

  • @mzzphit Glad to help ^_^

Yes, you can get by without knowing music theory, but if you look into history, every single great composer was well studied in music theory. In my own opinion I believe that trying to be a composer without music theory education is similar to trying to be an a scientist without taking any science courses. Of course you can do it, but it will put you at a disadvantage. On the flip side, music theory isn't a magic pill either, it's simply a tool. ^_^

  • Comment removed

  • @Lypur well said, and just a guideline too, not sacred laws that if you break you get brutally punished or something

  • @Lypur No legitimate producer has ever not learned theory. I guarentee that. You're all fooling yourselves by thinking you're an artist in any form but have'nt studied one bit of music theory. I smell trap beats

  • @Lypur thank you for uploading these mideo's

  • @Lypur

How much of this should I learn before I am able to compose simple chiptunes?

I've just remembered that I have studied that when I was like 8 years old too but my parents made me sing in a chore. I didn't like it and I felt embarrassed. I think I did it for 2-3 years and then I dropped out at first opportunity. Maybe it was a mistake. Too bad I never learned to play the piano.

  • @mzzphit ur saying that if you can speak fluently ...you dont have to learn how to read and write...

  • Can I know which lessons are necessary for Electronic music production ?? I don't think I need to learn the notes.. :/

  • the fucking advertisement bust my speakers =|

  • wat the,,, ist lesson 1-40??? omg.. hahaha.. but its good i really understand it well..thank you sir..=)

  • thank you for these lesson! you are awesome!

  • 9 people hate you but 524 like you

  • i love your hair by the way

  • What if you have the same number of grouped notes above the middle line as the number below it? How do you determine which way to draw the stem?

  • And I thank you so much there needs to be more people like you in this world I by no means have any way to get to paino lessons or music classes because my parents are so busy but now I have a whole music theory class at my fingertips again thank you very much Lypur I can honestly say you have changed someones life.

  • I watched the first two videos and understood everything and memorized it within like 30 minutes guess that means ima a natural? I dont know but these videos work very good. I just think some people get intimidated by how smart he sounds and dont follow through.

  • i have a music theory test about two weeks i will make it i hope so thank you so much for doing this

  • I used to play piano for 9 years but I stopped and now I want to continue my theory but I don't have the money.

THANK YOU SO MUCH. If I ever see you in real life I'll hug you and buy you food, coffe, whatever I can.

  • This is so great to have these lessons. I am so gratefull

  • Thanks so much for these videos. You are teaching me so many things that I could never afford to pay someone to teach me. You are a blessing to me.

  • Those 260 000 were your viewers but these 65000 are your students. Still you are best teacher on earth. i am one of those students.... lots of love and good wishes for you :).

  • Most generous person in the world and you hope he gets what he wants out of life?

    Calm down bro

  • @GiantBandana no you

  • this is amazing. what you are saying actually makes sense.

  • Your lessons are absolutely comprehensible! Thank for your efforts.

  • Thank you Andrew for these great lessons, they are so easy to follow, you manage to explain in such simple terms, I have tried to read this stuff in books and didn't understand it

  • The number of people who watched the first lesson drops dramatically from there onwards, something like 260 000 to 65 000.

Shows the amount of people who persevered. I'll just take that as a lesson not to give up on these things so easily

  • @marluxene only 1% of the people from lesson 1 make it to lesson 40.

  • Some philosophers say the true meaning of happiness comes from a life of virtue.

You have certainly achieved that, my friend. Thank you so much for this.

  • Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge. You are very generous. May GOD bless you.

  • It's actually halving, not doubling. GREAT LESSONS!

  • dude u are my hero

  • A music teacher of mine had a trick to remember the stem positions. Imagine the staff is an ocean, and the middle line is the top of the water. Below the middle line a note is drowning, and above the middle line the note is paddling. Then when the note is at the bottom and the stem is going up, it looks like a "d" because the note is drowning. When the note is at the top of the staff, the stem is going down and the note looks like a "p" because the note is paddling.

  • about the flag staying on the same side... a little memory help might be the focus line..."the wind stays blows from the same direction even if i move the stick its hanging from"

just came to mind that the clef could be presented as a ventilator form which the wind blows so the flag is always away from the 'source of wind', the clef

  • about the flag staying on the same side... a little memory help might be the focus line..."the wind stays blows from the same direction even if i move the stick its hanging from"

    just came to mind

  • what about the bass clef?

  • @sushicraver975

if i'm not mistaken...the same principle applies

  • I LOVE YOUR LESSONS! Thanks a lot :D

  • man i love your funny ways of teaching :)

  • Mathematicians would say 2^n-th power :-)

  • Thank you soooo much!

  • wow who would dislike this?

  • your funny , im brushing my self up with your music theory lessons and these are good videos , keep up the good work.

  • thanks for taking the time to teach , maybe know ill be able to learn how to write music i play myself or maybe in my head , is that possible? anyways i always do your homework rather than school ha ha ha. that is bad isn't it ?

  • so when you have a group of connected notes the stems always go down?

  • @justsomewammyskid They only go down when the note is located on or above the middle line of your staff. 6:50

  • @VexylMusic oh ok, thanks

  • Comment removed

  • Just saying... it isn't doubling really, it is getting cut in half. Or am I looking at it wrong?

  • @Rockerman52 sort of, because their 'cut in half' you can fit twice as many in a bar

  • You're an awesome teacher! :) Thanks for sharing these lessons with us :) I've finally decided to learn music theory because I play the guitar and your videos are really helpful! I was just wondering about that group of three notes, two above the middle line and one under the middle line, do the two have to be on the same space/line?And do both of the ones above connect with the one beneath the middle line or just the one under the line and the second above the line? That's what I was wondering.

  • what does the arrow above the e 8th note (on the stem directions) mean? or signify??

  • Um.. What about stem direction on a grand staff? :o [excuse me if its in another lesson :P]

  • He looks like Bernardo from Zorro Generation Z XD

  • I'm finding this really helpful! It's not boring either and it's good as it's in small chunks! x

  • i found very helpful

  • You are an excellent teacher. I've been playing guitar for a few years, but I've only just played songs by reading tabs, or by improvising. But, you are helping me become a real musician. Thank you.

  • I really enjoy this, but I'm learning it so I can learn to compose, are you going to give lessons on that?

  • So all the little circles and lines don't like the purple forestpeople, and now we know that it's because of the beach incident. I can't wait to see how it will unfold. This story is amazing.

  • Thanks man this helps soo much, thank you so much your a great man

  • The stems are glued to the note heads. They don't slide around at all, but they spin along with the notes. The flags always blow in the direction of the music, like real flags in the wind. That's a good way to remember. :3

  • @Wolvenblaze : Thanks!

  • I really appreciate you doing this. I'm currently taking a class called Music in Context at my college and it's supposed to be about music history and appreciation and stuff but my teacher insists on telling us all these advanced theory things and expects us to already be familiar with it. This has helped me deal with him and his bs lol. :) + This has helped a lot with my singing and drumming.

  • Oh mate you make me laugh, thanks loads for these free uns. Anyway all i wanna know is,is there definate advantage in learning all this theory because i can play guitar quite well and all i can read is tab.

  • Thanks for the helping video, really great.

  • Watching your videos to brush up on my knowledge of music theory (or lack thereof). Didn't know about the "tug-a-war" aspect of the stem direction for grouped 8th and 16th notes. I've just blindly let Finale Notepad do it for me these past years... *blush* You learn something new every day... Thanks.

  • These are really awesome tutorials man. You explain things in a way I can understand. Hopefuly I can apply what I learned into producing hip hop music.

  • thank u for all the great stuff :)))))

  • thanks andrew

  • i just lost the game.

  • thanks. these videos are really helpful.

only one thing im not sure of..

how long is the stem supposed to be?

  • @davencarp1991 it doesnt really matter, but most would be about twice the size of the circle :)

  • keep up the great work man, forget about all the haters there just jealous...keep it up.

  • So if a note is on the bass clef, the stem is pointing up or down based on the middle line in the bass clef?

Also, what happens if a note is on middle C?

  • THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THESE VIDEOS. :)) I played violin for nine years, but I had a love hate relationship with my violin, and I wasn't interested enough in practising, especially the music theory. Then I gave up playing and I've regretted it since. I haven't touched my violin in years and soon I am going to start going to a band course, and I really want to shine there and be able to sing and learn a new instrument with confidence. And thanks to you, I'm remembering the theory part again, YAY!

  • (It's actually dividing by 2) The numbers get bigger but the time divisions get smaller!

  • You are one of the most generous people in the world for doing this, I hope you get everything you want out of life. Bless you and your family.

  • it's a shame 7 people missed the like button

  • "Merci!" is all I have to say. I had to start on one of the later videos since I've been involved in music since the 5th grade, and studying theory for a couple of years now. But I found where I was and already am learning more from the videos I'm on than the past couple years! I'm so tired of being ripped off by buying theory books that barely tap into it's beauty. But you offer people that beauty for free- and more! Thank you

  • lypur ur a great teacher and all but how do you play the ones with the 16th and the 32nd notes T_T..just could'nt understand it.

  • thanks, you're a terrific teacher!

  • Great stuff here.. Thanks so much for teaching music theory. I wish you create some lession on other musical instuments what you know.

  • Lypur, you rock. Seriously, I am learning a lot, thanks.

    Oak

  • this is wat i was looking for!!! THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • i like your vids but no offense ur not that funny

  • can't wait till i learn more. oh man :)

  • As a marching drummer who is trying to get into guitar now i thank you so MUCH!

  • I've had my keyboard since 2007, and even though I tried to learn the piano, I know jack. If I hadn't found your website a few months ago, I totally would've given up. Thanks for making things simple, and giving me hope! You're amazing!

  • mañana la cuido de 7:30 a 13.... por eso .... (cagó la chivi ahora e me diario) na mentira no embrollo ma con cosa ajena

  • i like the homework haha!!! ^^ thank you !!!

  • Which way does the stem go if it's inbetween the basems and treble clefts at center c

  • @Soccermaniac3555 Id expect upwards since it's still part of the notes played on the treble/bass clef staff and it's still below the centre of the staff. Am i right Andrew?.

  • Comment removed

  • @Soccermaniac3555 Actually i am wrong, i remember from music theory in college that you just add in a single note in the below, above and Centre area, there are no stems, only if it's on the lines and spaces, the C note in the Centre is usually a whole note with a line though it (which is the "invisible" ledger line, you get taught without drawing them in these days and the ones not on the ledger lines are just whole notes.

  • Where's number 2??

  • Your such a bro dude. These lessons have helped me so much. Thanks a lot dude!

  • You have convinced me i'm going to buy a piano, i can't believe it i had a piano around the house for about 20 years and never gave it try! I'm going the whole way ...

thank you thank you thank you

ps. if you ever come to italy you have a place to stay.

  • very kind of you to do this, thanks again :)

  • thanks a lot for the effort man, you do a great job.

  • the way i remember the flag positionsis east and west. the people in the west are stereotyped to have a southern accent and the people in the east aresupposedto have a northern accent, yes its stereotyped but its the way i remember it! your lessons are great andrew!

  • This is so cool Your a funny dude... I love it...

  • I wish you were my music teacher =_= mine sucks bigtime. Your videos are really helping me with both playing piano and passing my music GCSE(english grades lol) :} thanks a bunch ^-^

  • i lol'd at 1:27

  • lolz...youre funny

  • Very Very Good stuff. I am so glad that you are doing this!

  • I am doing the third lesson, the learning curve is different but its starting to make sense so now when I look at my keyboard I am not totally lost ....thanks again...I got alot of notes to draw :)

  • In regards to stem direction, I often see in piano/vocal/chord sheet music a note with the stems extending both up and down on the exact same note. It's usually in the "vocal" staff, but I've seen it in the piano section as well. What exactly does that mean?

  • what about breeve? is that then length of 2 whole notes?

  • Thanks Andrew - well explained and very helpful!

  • Thanks very much for posting the video. Your teaching has really helped me. Keep up the good work. Rgds

  • Andrew, I really have to thank you for your generosity to share your knowledge here, I am an adult piano learner, and this really help me a lot....

with me learning this at home...

  • 6/8 time could be counted in 8th note triplets right ?
