  • I played this in U of M:)

  • @SuperMacprincess1 University/Underworld/ of Manchester/Michigan/Mars?

  • @timlaimusician University of Michigan sorry

  • el oboe muy mal tocado no mostrava sentimiento

  • los comentarios no son por ofender pero la verdad es que le hace falta mucho por mejorar al oboe y claro que la orquesta que lo acompaña no lo favorece.

  • Great job. Very well done.

  • Good job but too bad we can't see the orchestra aswell :( but this one of the best performances on youtube that i have seen Bravo.

  • Great Job...This particular piece was used in the Heath Ledger film Casanova..

  • A bit sharp , but otherwise I loved your tone

  • I wouldn't dare comment about your playing style due to your nationality. I too was born in Scotland.

  • i play the oboe and i thing thas so good

  • アルビノーニはばかのいっちょおぼえでyngwieのadagio版しかしらなかった!たまには交響曲も荘厳な感じがしていいですね!!

  • When I heard - for the first time - this Concert, written by Tomasso Albinoni something very surprising happened to me. I cannot describe it as I changed my love for Baroque-music .

Before I was a unique Bach-lover, now I realized that more genial musicians - both composers and players - formed this type of music that is in my way of living brilliant, soft and also very emotional simply by its absolute beauty. Personal happenings in my life made me every time more a lover of Albinoni...

  • yay it sounded amazing <3 I'm going to be playing this for a concerto contest for $1000 for my local collage

  • Well i thought that overall it was very good; however, there were a few spots were he was out of tune but ya it was still ausome.

  • LOVE IT !!!!!!!!!!!! THIS IS GREAAATTTTT

  • I think the speed is good and well judged. My personal taste would to be a little more detached than the longer lines you create. American players tend to make the whole thing more legato that I personally like. Its a lovely piece to play and I think you do well. I treat the oboe as a "little trumpet" in this piece and that approach served me well. Keep up the great work Tim.

  • Your playing style is to my liking! The only problem is the quality. Maybe the speed is too fast but it is your's to decide :)

  • ¡¡¡Excelente interpretación, felicidades!!!

  • A reasonably good piece of work. I am not sure I like your phrasing, you don't seem to make your mind about when and where to use the legatos and staccatos, but you have evidently put a lot of work in it and that goes to your credit. Keep up the good work.

  • Super!!

    Verry well done!

  • Where was this recorded? Some kind of European castle, from the looks of it.

  • the oboe has a "humble" sound, it's pretty :)

  • Dynamics and intonation need work

  • Pros: pretty good tone

Cons: just got caught in a double whammy and they both had to do with you playing while a bit tense. 1) kinda sped up but it wasn't too bad. 2) didn't hit some of those lower notes.

    otherwise great job.

  • S'wonderful, marvelous, incredible!

  • no esta nervioso el chino ni na

  • Wonderful interpretation. I like it how fresh and freely Tim Lai and also the whole ensemble plays.

  • I like the way his whole body is playing

  • The nerves were obvious but what an amazing performance. And wow the strings, who were they?

Albinoni makes me weep, his music is so beautiful.

  • critizising because of nationality?? well I guess one would have to be crazy to do that. you play very well!

  • @MsCellobass There are some crazy people on the internet. It's amazing what anonymity can bring out from people.

  • The sound is very distorno from a bad recording. There are a few discordant notes from the strings and oboist who also still need to study.

The trill are madeby the top note in baroque music, there are too many sound-related.

In general is running for an average level of students.

    Good road and good study.

  • this is a great performance! i am playing this song for my solo this year and it's really helping me play it better!

  • The acoustics in that hall are amazing, as are the players. Wow.

  • The accoustics in that hall are amazing, as are the players. Wow.

  • My only suggestion... you seem to be rushing it a little... just a FRACTION, but it makes a difference between making the musical ride truly enjoyable, and not slightly nervous, as it seems to me. Otherwise, very skilled, already. Thankyou.

  • @andreaprodan well usually the rest of the accompaniment follows the soloist so it would end up the orchestra dragging.

  • you play as badly as yours look is. play rather with yourself.

  • Hey I need help... I'm not sure if I'm doing this right. I'm 14 and i've played the oboe for um... 2 years now? and i don't why but i can't get my 'lower' part of my body to blow. instead i use my lungs and i think it's not the right way... my teacher's not very helpful. any tips?

  • @maxliasdf ... breathe into your stomach... if that makes sense!! then into your lungs.. and control the 'outlet'......

  • Tell me, my friend, after enjoying this... is there some idiot that dare to say something about your style due to nationality? You touch my emotions with this masterpiece... Albinoni is one of my idols... thank you so much! way to go!!!

  • dude love the opening comment and your playing of course. bravo!

  • Oh, I love so much this concerto....

  • This my new favorite recording for this piece. Splendid job young man.

  • It's Amazing!

  • reading some of the assinine comments around here proves one thing. People will complain about ANYTHING. Your'e concerned about his movements?!? my God. Should he be like a palace guard drone? would that please you? what a fickle, self-righteous crowd you are . The man is feeling the music, stop your bloody whining....jeezus.

  • @PChord1 Well PChord you can feel music as well without movements. I don't say he has to stay still, he only has to select some movements en skip some other. as i said before: Advices takes a player further than just say: oh it's fantastic. (i don't disagree he plays very good)

  • great!

  • Bravo!!! ... fantastic.!!

  • Absolutely fantastic performance! If moving around helps you to perform better than do it. Don't listen to the other comments.

  • @vissi87 I don't agree with you. I think moving can disturb the audience. When you move to much your sound can never be optimal. The sound from this player is already very nice but can even become better by standing more still. Advices take a player further than just say that something is fantastic!

  • ha, what you like!!

  • muito bom

  • sweet EUPHONY!!!!!! BRILLIANTLY EXECUTED AND PERFORMED

  • Musical performance is very nice. But you're moving to much. When i don't look it sounds nicer than when i see your movements.

BUT your sound is very nice!!!

  • Beautiful performance! thanks for sharing

  • Don't even listen to all these comments buddy. This is a great performance.

I heard this piece of work when I woke up at last Sunday morning. I LOVE IT!

  • The oboe is not an easy instrument to play.

  • I have listened to a few other oboists play this piece and notice that they play more staccato.

  • finooo

  • But i have to say, you play it very well. Nice work on the instrument

  • I was questioning myself about the initial warning, but now i know why...ahahahahahah

  • love is real

  • This is lacking in basic technique, (phrasing, etc...), and I just don't like your sound, (this is more personal, some may like it, I don't), watch out for being to bright.

  • I don't know if it's because of the quality of the microphone, but otherwise you really have to be careful with high tones. You often lose control over them and then they sound very unstable.

  • I have watched this video a number of times and I love it. Anyone who has a comment about race, creed or color can take their foul unjust comments and stick it. Keep up the excellent playing, and thank you for sharing.

  • Very nice. The young people play it very well.

  • Baroque is a lot of counterpoint; not easy to play flawlessly! Good effort.

  • stay still dammit :P

  • @tomolad93

As an oboe player (who wishes they could be this good), I can say that if you truly love what you are doing (as this wonderful perfomer seems to), it is very very VERY hard, maybe even impossible to stay still while "FEELING" the music. Oboe is also hard enough to make your fingers work right while sitting down, let alone standing up,so I think you should appreciate this wonderful performance more! Great job, I hope to be as good as you someday! You have an amazing tone!! =D

  • super piękne brawo

  • Don't like his attitude... But maybe it's because he was nervous.

  • I did notice a few slips in the strings, but I will not criticize since the performance was good overall. This piece is a true test for an oboist: those big intervals separate the masters from the learners. Mr. Lai's playing was quite masterful, as much as I could hear. What absolutely strikes me about his playing is the character: he plays with a strength of sound. It is the true forte: not loud, but strong.

  • Listen to it around 27 for an example of "off" strings . .I find the effect charming though, as before mentioned it makes it clear that this is not some kind of synthesizer or digital production, but real live people playing actual instruments. I love it.

  • I dont think the strings are 'slightly off', not compared to many Ive heard anyways.

  • perfecto !

    nice performance !

  • Wow, well done! It is in my fav. now. Love the Albinoni music.

  • Excellent. One of my favorites. I happen to like the slightly "off" strings they make the piece sound REAL and not like a computer. Love all three of these in fact. Nice work Tim

  • Nimen/nin tan den hen hao :-)) Wo hen xihuan nimen de yinyue

  • Les concertos pour hautbois d'Albinoni sont très beaux.

  • I think the orchestra sounds a little too loud. Otherwise I think you did a good job!

  • I do not like to.

I thought it was an experienced musician ;/

  • omg is that westminster school- i go there now!

  • indeed it is!

  • haha, i see mr hopkins on the harpsichord. great playing btw.

  • i like that piece

but i think it's a bit to slow (i play it too and a bit faster)

  • awesome i also play oboe so muchh betta then himm

  • Very nice performance. Congratulations!

  • ow i got to grade 5 on the oboe and played it for 4 years. Had to stop to concentrate on piano. Didn't have time for both :(

  • me too

  • gosh ive been playing oboe for 2 years and i can play this but he has such a good tone.

  • This was filmed 3 years after I started playing the oboe (I started when I was 15). Keep working on the embechoure and the support. The nice tone will be a by-product of the hard work you put in!

  • what?? 2 years?

    either ur bluffing

    or ur unbelievably talented

  • it's normal. i played this when i learnt the oboe for 2 years as my grade 8 music piece :)

  • um actually it's not normal

could be that u can play it

but the question is how GOOD u play it

if u can play this song within 2 years AND it sounds nice so u have to be very talented.

  • GOD, I LOVED ITT!!!!

OBOE is soooooo "dramatic", it has a very beautiful sound. If i could choose by playing a woodind instrument, i'd choose oboe :).

  • its also alot harder to play in tune, and you need to suport so much more than flute. alot of what you sound like depends on your reeds too.

  • If it's harder to play in tune, then why does the entire orchestra tune to the oboe?

  • Because the oboe is the hardest orchestral instrument to tune

  • because the pitch is adjustable it allows the instrument to be tuned much easier without having to pull it apart like a clarinet or flute, so its simply an easier instrument to pick the tone up from.

  • @yallieballie the orchestra tunes to the oboe because the oboe is the only instrument in the orchestra that can be heard over all the other instruments.

  • Very nice. Oboe is my favourate woodind, if I were to play anything aside from classical guitar and it would be oboe. Your performance is great.

    Ryan

  • what is the bass section consisting of? contrabass, cello, basso continuo? Which part is the harpsicord doubling?

  • This is lovely. Albinoni wrote more than his Adagio. Baroque rocks!

  • Una muy buena interpretación para este hermoso concierto de Tomaso Albinoni, felicitaciones Tim Lai

  • muchísimas gracias

  • Pinta para ser muy buen oboísta.

  • To anyone who makes any (positive or negative) comment on the sound: the audio was recorded on a Sony camcorder - the same one that is also recording the image. Sound quality will naturally be poorer than the professional recordings that are around, and I can live with that.

  • it is a very difficult Bach's piece to be performed, but he works in a very good way, oboé is not too easy as flute, congratulations

  • albinoni, not bach

  • How is it harder?

  • i'm currently on the alto sax, i'm 16 and i've been playing for 5 years now. i've been told that i'm really advanced for my age/experience and my band teacher has told me to try out oboe for a challenge :)

listening to pieces like this gets me really excited, keep up the great work, this sounds awesome!!!!

  • You should!!! :D...

I think it sounds very nice :P

  • Hey! I just wanted to thank you for posting this. I'm learning this at the moment and it was really helpful to hear the string parts etc that go with it and also someone elses interpretation (crap spelling!) of the peice.

    Keep it up :)

  • well i started with clarinet, then bass clarinet, then basoon, then saxaphone, then oboe XD

lol i know.. too much switching

  • o i want to try more different instruments...

  • I really love your performance. I played violin a few years. Although my parents wanted me to be a violinist, I always wanted to learn oboe. I think its sound is so noble. I became to love oboe after listening this song ten years ago. I did not know the name of it. Now, I am so happy that I can find this song. There might be some bad comments here, but I want to say that this is impressive. I totally love it. Thank you for sharing your music!!!

  • La pieza es bella, pero esta interpretación tiene varios errores.

  • Anyone knows a web page where to download the score for this movement??

  • fantastic!

  • Absolutely brilliant thank you

  • albinoni=music;great oboe playing.

  • brilliant tim, cant believe i came across this little beauty, now i have to watch all the movements. I heard all your practicing at uni, but with the others it sounds even better!

  • i love oboe's sound. it's orgasmic. i love it

  • Nice! Love the sound of oboe.

  • Wow,this is really good. I play oboe, guitar, upright bass, flute, and piccolo. I'm the school's oboe/piccolo player now though. I play oboe during concert band. I've tried really hard with oboe, and I really love it. I went to honor band this year, but I made last chair. I'm completely self taught. I'm gonna get a teacher this summer though. :) May I ask you something?? Do your hands ever shake when you play?? And if they do,how do you stop them from shaking???lol -Kandy-
  • Hands shaking when you play??? uhh.. Take aa deep breath lol calm down.. i think your nervous. its good your getting a teacher.. i play oboe.. and its like.. i was reborn when i got a teacher!! its really fun.

  • Oh,I totally agree!I just went to my first lesson yesterday, and I learned so much in that one lesson!

    I absolutely love it!

  • umm are you out of your mind?

I own this piece in my collection.

All I said is some suggestion and your being a total prick. I can play all 3 movements.

  • Pretend the people in the audience are all naked :D and you won't be so nervous lol

  • what do you think about flute? i dont know what to learn flute or oboe.. i wanna go to a conservatory or something like that.

  • i would recommend oboe.

i was classically trained on the flute and its a great instrument. but there are too many flute players out there & the competition is much more intense. if you are young, start with the clarinet so you can get used to a reed instrument and then upgrade to the oboeo.

  • I started on flute, then violin, and now im playing oboe. The fingerings on flute are much more similar to those of an oboe than those of a clarinet are.

I recommend oboe. The flute is a good instrument, but competition is way fierce and there are just too many flutists XD

  • Seems to me like the orchestra is simply pumping out the notes rather than feeling the emotion behind this piece.

  • Btw.. are you in an youth orchestra?

  • omg

    love it

  • I play guitar and I love this shit man. Awesome work.

  • i played this song too. it is not easy. bat he played very born, he most played with very big energy

  • Sounds like an easy piece..

    but sounds so good!

  • I a flutist, and i envy your playing very much

  • Really nice sound! Bravo! Also the orchestra is great!

All the same your articulations are boring!

Play it a bit more "agressive".

  • Lovely tune and playing! TY

  • Wonderful work! Thank you for posting this!

  • Bravo. Bene.

  • Hes chinese . Junguk

  • lol oh he is junguk... btw r u Korean?

  • lol yeah

  • I bet i'm not!

  • you would know...lol

  • Some errors here and there but I think that is mainly because you were so nervous. There are some meditation techniques that can help to control your nerves on stage. You got a good sound. Maybe you could articulate more; too much legato for my taste

  • i agree, the notes are correct most of the time, but it sounds a little messy because of the oversised legatos, but a very good job, its not easy as some people may think

  • You have to rest in the tempi, to be a part of the music. Don´t push it, sing it!

  • It's wonderful.

  • sorry to be mean but those little slight movement u did before u start playing is very unprofessional and maybe unrespectful to some anal ones, so do take note on that

  • you did very good but you can tell your nervouss.. work on that and you'll do better

  • I like Albinoni very much and it´s nice of you to share this video with us. It´s good!

  • so im playing this piece right now. to tell you the truth, this is the first recording i have heard of it. it sounds great! i cant wait to get it sounding better :) keep the good work.

  • I like how everyone who comments on YouTube are experts. Well performed!

  • Good job, but you seemed very nervous ;)

  • I don't like it very much, but it's not bad!

  • q te pises fillmeu? astudiar com un jabato!!! redeu!!! vax a ficate bon treball, perq no vas a pillar ni una...great job!!! xdd

  • My ears give you 5 stars! And that is after my eyes are ignored! I agree with iheartmyoboe. You did some "no-no!", like putting your hand in the pocket (is this shopping mall??) ... ok, you're nervous ;)

Dont make your good music suffers just because the eyes get some unusual stuffs!

  • Excelente interpretación, felicitaciones!!!!

  • Bravo for your level!Continue practicing!!Dear iheartmyoboe:Your critics are exact but for another level.May be in three or four years he will understand.

  • Thank you so much for posting this.

  • Bravssimo, Tim, commendable effort.Albinoni wrote beautiful music. Check out also Han de Vries (ex-principal oboist of the Concertgebouw Orch.of Amsterdam)superb version of the Dutch school of oboe playing. sd goh (malaysia)

  • First of all this piece is really repetitive it NEEDS ornamentation, baroque music was meant to be ornamented. Also, you MUST stay focused for the entire performance, don't fiddle around with your reed or look back at your ensemble. It's distracting to the audience. Movement while you're playing is fine but you sway out of nervousness and it too is really DISTRACTING. Don't worry about your audience just think about the music you're creating and get lost in it. Happy Oboe Playing!!

  • sometimes you have to fiddle with your reed... i did a solo piece and my reed started shifting... yeah that's bad... i had to fix it... or have a messed up C D and Eb for the rest of the evening... or until i put my new reed in... sometimes you have to do that...
