  • "men are on top" because MEN are making the choices to reach the top. There are fewer women on the top because fewer women are perusing such careers. Funny how we rarely hear of how men are at the bottom as well making up over 3/4 of suicides, over 80% of the homeless. Women control over 70% of all money and live longer. Men are choosing the careers which pay more because they are more physically demanding and hazardous. The pay gap is justified!

  • I feel like I'm not getting something here... It sounds like they're talking about two different things. Farrell is talking about how "more men are willing to work in certain kinds of jobs" , and Martha Burke is talking about the same jobs but different pay? Hmmm....

  • @akillerkidofcolor Martha Burke is lying to you, it took me a minute to understand as well and as soon as I realized it I got angry. There is no way in American culture that two employees one male, one female employed at the same company, at the same position and work the same hours that one would get paid less. There would be a clear paper trail and a gender bias lawsuit would ensure with the company paying millions. No company I know of would allow it.

  • Yes i just wanted to clarify that the Mosuo tribe can only be called matriarchal in a very broad sense since men had all the political power of the tribe and it was only matriarchal in that the family lineage of "lesser" classes where seen from the mothers side of the family.

We have the same debate raised by the same lesbo man hating women every year IN Australia.I had no idea that the figure was based on Total wage earned by men vs total wage earned by women until looking it up.THATS IT!And it still makes headlines every year!IM sorry but i head 2km under ground for 2 weeks on and 2 weeks off as a job,there no way in the world a woman typing up some legal docs should get payed the same as me!

  • The wage gap clearly doesnt exist otherwise NO one would hire men as they can get women for a much lower price..This obviously isnt true as the wage gap isnt a factor at all in how much a person earns.Have you ever considered this the more you PAY a women or a man the less time he's going to be working because he can go into retirement ALOT faster.This points to why men have more experience aswell with the experience they eventually begin to get higher pay.That's just how it works.

  • The top 1% control 40% of the wealth. Most people up that high are CEO's. Many CEO's are much older than many of their subordanites. Time lag and averaging often change those statistics. That being said, sometimes employers will try anything to pay different people the least that they think that they will get away with, if pay is often non-standard. Compare your pay, expirance, and performance to others in your own field to determine the truth.

    The only thing gov't coercian & increased minimum wages (for example) do is raise overall consumer prices - hurting those minimum wage earners the most.

    Tradesmen have no ethical right to force customers to pay more, or demand they employ them over others (scabs)

    I think that pay rate should be equitable in the sense that both candidates meet the requirements.

    Is their a difference yes, I have worked as a field technican/computer technican and have personally seen it. Rising in a company with manual or stressful labour "dirty work" is usuall given to men as women are weak.

  • Once I gained respect from fellow collegue, we got along great but the oppurtunities were still limited. I worked 12 hours days sometimes and have lifted material above 50 lbs and was asked if I was straight.

    If someone can't see the social demographics of gender roles and how they affect gender neutral individuals as myself, then you are blind. Although on the other hand I will not deny some can exagerate on the difference, women are also to blame for not working the physical aspects.

  • Education, experience, performance and seniority do make a huge difference, which is common sense or so I hope.

    If I applied as an executive assistant, lets say John Doe had a university degree relevant to the position and I had a college degree relevant to the position, then I would only expect John Doe to be paid more than me, since he has applied himself longer in an educational establishment.

  • I agree in some cases there is discrimination but I also see it with men. I guess the best example would be the military and how women need not apply as much as a male physically, yet still retain the same pay.

    Although I have also been treated unjust in the past like I said , women can also be sexist towards other women. Same can be said for men.

    Every job has requirements and in order to succeed one must be able to overpass them. Anything is obtainable but it needs to be worked for!

  • Finally someone said it! In the past 12 companies I have worked at I have seen the payroll at every company. Without being specific, women at the lower levels earn about 10k MORE than men, at the mid level women earn 20-30k more than men, and at the top it is almost equal. The truth is men, get paid less than women and several studies have confirmed this.

  • As an employer, and as Farrel states, I only hope my competition discriminates becuase of gender. Why? They'll quickly be put out of business with negative publicity & lawsuits.

    The reason you don't see endless TV lawyers trying to drum up wage gap discrimination on American TV is becuase its almost non existant.

    Larger forces are at play to frustrate you on purpose dear. Its a long story about big bankers who loan our countries money loving women in the workforce slaving away to pay more income tax. (income tax goes directly into the hands of international bankers in the form of interest only.)

    Don't ever feel 2nd for being a woman & wanting 'women things.' Men & women are totally different no matter what they say.

    If a women wanted or was raised as a gender neutral individual, she could possess anything if she worked at it 120%. The only difference in theses cases are reproductive systems/ delivery amount of hormones.

    Since most of the studies in the past were only done on male subject, most studies are merely theories. More and more studies are being done on women though, not to deny the other side either.

  • In closing, I can only say 'go with your heart.'  Do what your inner voice tells you (whether its working 60 hours a week, or having a family one day and raising kids.)

  • Well, I was hoping I could be shown where this happens with the exact same jobs. Not men vs women per se, but women vs men in the same job. Of course I wont see it, but the interesting thing is that it goes unchallenged. That being said, I am a fiesty Irish prick so I dont mind challenging it.....lol

Two interesting points....I read online last night that between 65-90% of HR people are women....and I read that women get paid 30% than men for the SAME job. So....that tells me that a man getting a job at 50k would pay about 35k for a woman and that the HR person in charge (65-90% women) would not bring that out in the open for some intracompany transperancy? Am I to belive that women in HR see this and do nothing?

  • By the way, the problem with the 'same job' comparison is they don't mention the women average 35 hours a week vs 60 hours a week for men (on the extreme.)

  • Thats were the anger comes from. Public officials create anger by misleading women into believing they get paid less for the same work. Thats been illegal for decades. And I as an employer hope my competition would discriminate because they'd be out of business quickly.

    When infact, men will always take more dangerous jobs, jobs that require greater distances of travel, more education, and are less likely to take several year breaks in their careers to raise kids - losing seniority.

  • I am a feminist, and I am replying. There may be truth about what he is saying to some degree, but there is still undoubtedly sexism in America. Men are not to blame either. The huge addition of women to the labor market has created inevitable problems. The role of family has yet to be established in many families with both parents working full time.

    As far as sexism, it only exists where it counts - against men, in family courts / asset division & criminal court where women average 1/3 the prison time their male counterparts receive for the same crimes.

    So, let's talk stats. You say that 90% of prison inmates were raised by single mothers. This is NOT evidence of causation. The majority of these inmates are also growing up in poor neighborhoods with few community resources, and mothers that are not around because they have to work full time.

    Inner city neighborhoods often adopt anomic forms of employment for youth, this is often crime, specifically drugs and gangs.

    (Stop the belief that more socialism / big gov't intervention / education will some how miraculously solve the problem)

    All thats needed is 2 parent households, and power restored to parents again (eg, booting morinic laws that spanking a disruptive teen lands you in jail.)

    They teach kids to defy parents in our very schools - 1 small part of the equation.
