You are all stupid... A cover by a band of a song from another isn't aiming to be as good or better as the original, in the same sound, it's a tribute... U2 was in the experimentation of new sound before Achtung Baby when they did that, and they wanted to give this song a shot with a new kind of sound that they were developing. By no mean they wanted to sound as the rolling stones. And this is actually pretty good in it's own style.
I think this one is ok. But I still prefer the original one, of course. But come on people, U2 didn't actually ruin it. They just made a cover becouse they like the original one. I have seen better covers, but some people may like this one, so let them like this.
@Volume725 Mick Jagger was one of Marianne Faithfull’s many sexual partners. They had a higly publicised romantic relationship.
In her 1994 autobiography, “Faithfull: an autobiography,” she wrote that once during sex with Mick Jagger, he whispered in her ear, “I’d like to be making love to Keith Richards right now.”

@METALLICA6547 you're the fuck up you fucking shitstain stop commenting on this cover as if was just released yesterday when the cover itself was recorded in 1992 and is almost 20 years old...btw this cover fucking rocks...anyone who doesn't like it like the shitdick who's comment appears next to yours is a fucking moron...that means you
Speaking of a fucked up cover that would be Metallica's "Whiskey in the Jar"....only they could that song up that badly
I've listened to this version a couple of times, and have heard how, over the "MANY" years the Stones have played Paint it black a difficult song to play live.
Mick's voice has certinally changed on this one a lot over the years, more so than any other Stones song that I can think of. I liked the early versions of this with Brian jones on the sitaar.
Trust me if this "U2" version was by any un-known band or "a lesser known band" it'd have been shot down in flames !!
I love U2, but this is a fucking mess. There are certain R&R songs, such as Eric Burdon's "House of the Rising Sun", Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody", etc., that can never be duplicated. Bands that attempt such folly only embarrass themselves.
@thatwalrusguy I didn't intend to imply that Burdon (Animals) wrote HOTRS, only that their version has become an iconic masterpiece, much like Bohemian Rhapsody and various rock classics. I know artists want to express their creativy and interpretation of other works, but some songs simply transcend those bounds, and even well-intended imitations end up simply make me cringe.
I love both the original and this cover. People who dont understand the lyrics and the move of the song are the Idiots and quite frankly the dumb fucks who will never realise the meaning of the song. And therefore those people are irrelavant in this thread. That is all.
why oh why did the record company/Stones or whoever owns the rights to this classic song allow this monstrosity to come out. i really dislike U2 but that has nothing to do with why i dislike it, if had been good i'd have commented so. this is just vile.
Is it me or does it seem that people mistake a band doing a cover song from another band as an attempt to "make it better" or "one up" the original? And these people get all bent out of shape and disgusted? Look people, cover songs are done because the band that's covering it loves the song and respects the original artists. It's a tribute more than anything else. Have a coke and a smile. Keith Richards doesnt care...so why the fuck should you? Holla.
@TheChoice264 i get that, in most cases, bands do covers as a homage but this sounds more like an insult!! sorry just my opinion. although i dont think Mick n Co will be complainin' about the money generated from said insult.
@TheChoice264 Keith Richards probably doesn't care because he gets royalties for this crappy cover and there wasn't much he could do to stop U2 from putting it out in any event. By your logic, I could take a dump, dedicate it to the Rolling Stones, and it's a tribute. That's pretty much what U2 did here.
@TheChoice264 There is a difference between not liking a cover version and expecting it to be the same as the original - personally I think the song lost it's nerve and feel when u2 covered it but that doesn't mean I can't appreciate why cover songs are made.. BEst cover I ever heard btw is Manic Depression by Hendirx, covered by a punkband called Nomeansno, you should give it a listen if you're into that sort of thing =)
@TheChoice264 Sorry man, this "respect and love" thing is only Your theory. Cool rock covers are imho eg. "Bang Bang" by the Raconteurs or "Jolene" by White Stripes. Imho a cool U2's cover is eg. "All along the Watchtower" of Jimmy Hendrix' song. It has power and all the things. But... this one... this one is pure sh*t. It's only a weak, unnecessary copy - not a real cover.
They should make it to where if you fuck up a good song by doing a crappy cover you should lose a finger or two. They would teach you to try and fix something that aint broke.
u2 does not suck >_> maybe this one song but come on this band made lots of albums my favorite album is u2 war and the best of 1980's-1990's. once again Bono does not suck you people probably love rebbeca black-friday lol.
U2 sucks ass they are one of the worst bands in history, and bono is a self obsessed prick. and dont say its just my opinion because anyone who says that is too much of a worthless dumbass to come up with a reason why U2 doesent suck. they ruined a great song by a legendary band.
I'm huge U2 fan and I love the fact that this song is in my collection; however, this is a crappy song. They completely toned down the original version. It lacks creativity and emotion. There's a reason why it never became popular. The same can be said for their other song on that single - "Fortunate Son." That is also bland and monotonous, not doing any justice to the original.
Bono does some great covers, but I agree this isn't one of them and Mick is arrogant but I still like them although The Stones just don't cut it for me live anymore. but their Music will Def Live on 4ever
im guessing U2 did this as a tribute to a band that influenced them. being from ireland and a fan of U2 i can honestly say it didn't work. it would be like some redoing 'with or with out you'. some things are best left alone
@TheMichaelsnumber1 GAGA, fucking hell no! The rolling stones are better, that's mostly what i meant, and u2 is all technoish, not rock so i don't give a fucking shit.
No youre wrong, what it does is bring the lack of colour from that era (liaten to all the other songs from that era - lacking stereo and templates of colour) The stones Original is timeless and essential to music but, covers are the updated accounts of this feeling. The original will be forever heralded as the best but these covers hold something for the new people in this generation. Both are great. Dont be that sad person who clings on to the past.
Is my opinion wrong? Maybe i should have added ''Personally i think this is a bad cover''. But considering these kinds of videos isn't crawling with 12-year-olds i thought it wouldn't be necessary, i guess i was wrong.
And saying i'm ''that sad person who clings on to the past'' for not liking something you do is making you look like an idiot.
Please don't be that one sad person who can't accept other people's opinions.
At no point did I call you sad. I discredited your lackluster *Bad Cover* comment. I thought I was quite neutral and explanatory and did not directly insult you as you did me. I said dont be, not you are. Im probably older than you to be honest but I recognise that a song is good aswell as the original being the best. And by the way you misquoted me too, but others will see that too , so Im thinking im not the one who is an idiot.
''...and did not directly insult you as you did me''
Where exactly did i directly insult you?
''At no point did I call you sad'' You're right, i misspoke. Does that make me an idiot? Certainly not, you're shooting yourself in the foot here.
''...I recognize that a song is good'' YOU think it's good. Like many others; I don't. While saying that in my first comment i even tried putting a bit of humor in as well to make it remove the melancholic edge to it.
@smartguy9765 Ok I dont know what you saw into what I wrote but it was obviously more than i intended. I meant no harm. You have every right to your opinion and I relish the fact that you do. Everyone is entitled to their opinion. Thank the grace for that.
@smartguy9765 Derp? you have quoted me saying this. And I obviously didnt. A lie. Which puts everything else you say in disripute. Your lie departs you from thinking you know about what you talk about. And also your lack of inteligence saying i directed ANYthing at you is obsurd. Get over yourself. and Learn from human kindness.
@smartguy9765 Ha, To be honest I never expected a reply. but you and your *derp* seem to be looking down on me and my opinion. Of course I have a right to it. So im not defered by your arogant slight. I stated my opinion and that is that. What ever you think is yours. Keep your derp with you whereever you go im sure it will keep you loose comfort.
@smartguy9765 Dude like I said - I never said your sad - you have a right and I welcome your opinion - i just think its wrong - which is MY opinion that you seem to think I dont have a right to...
This is awful. I actually like U2 but this is really crap...Echo & the Bunnymen's cover is so much better, but of course they were never as famous :/ This world is f-ed up!
Are you actually stupid? Where the hell can you hear autotune, the effect you hear is actually a Chorus/Flange type. So next time, actually know what your talking about before commenting ;)
This isn't a bad cover, and it's better than most of the versions of this song I've heard, but the Stones' version will remain the definitive one for me.
Feel free me to call me out on this (I'll just ignore you), but I wouldn't mind a Three Days' Grace cover of this song. For some reason, I think its lyrics and guitar/sitar riffs would go well with 3DG. That's my call.
omg this is unbelieveble like u2 can ever come near the quality of the stones, just compare bono to mick then you know enough. u2 should be allowed to cover good music cuz they cant make any either.
Common guys music isnt a item too make war about, in fact music is an universal medium too unite the peoples against poverty and injustice, the main ingredients for dispair and war!
i just saw the title and wanted to say FUCK YOU U2!! UR A SHIT BAND WITH A DICKHEAD OF A SINGER THAT WONT SHUT THE FUCK UP THINKING HE'S JESUS TRYING TO SAVE THE WORLD, THIS WAS A SHIT COVER AND U ARE THE MOST OVER RATED BAND IN THE WORLD!! now if only they could see my comment :(
Awesome cover. U2 and the Stones are two of rocks greatest, obviously u2 showing their respect for the Stones here. Bullshit comments as usual all over this video.
I think you guys need to stop thinking about the Stones while you listen to this, because it's a cover, it's not supposed to sound the same. Think about it as an isolated thing and I think you'll like it better.
You are all stupid... A cover by a band of a song from another isn't aiming to be as good or better as the original, in the same sound, it's a tribute...

Kaldhore 7 months ago
@smartguy9765 Derp? you have quoted me saying this. And I obviously didnt. A lie. Which puts everything else you say in disripute. Your lie departs you from thinking you know about what you talk about. And also your lack of inteligence saying i directed ANYthing at you is obsurd. Get over yourself. and Learn from human kindness.

@Kaldhore
Didn't we already already have this discussion?
And derp summarized all than followed, as well as compliment the incredibly bald ''youre wrong'' statement.
Was there anything else you wanted to talk about?
smartguy9765 7 months ago
@smartguy9765 Ha, To be honest I never expected a reply. but you and your *derp* seem to be looking down on me and my opinion. Of course I have a right to it. So im not defered by your arogant slight. I stated my opinion and that is that. What ever you think is yours. Keep your derp with you whereever you go im sure it will keep you loose comfort.
Kaldhore 7 months ago
And BTW I never said at all youre sad - i said dont be. If you choose (which you did) to be that person then im sorry.
Kaldhore 7 months ago
@Kaldhore
How does my previous comment make me sad? You're an idiot either way though, so whatever.
And you have already told me all this like three weeks ago. Are you mentally handicapped in some way?
smartguy9765 7 months ago
@smartguy9765 Dude like I said - I never said your sad - you have a right and I welcome your opinion - i just think its wrong - which is MY opinion that you seem to think I dont have a right to...

This is awful. I actually like U2 but this is really crap...Echo & the Bunnymen's cover is so much better, but of course they were never as famous :/ This world is f-ed up!

@XRobertX009

@nahalba stfu dumbass he sings anything great...no doubt better than you in your dreams!

One of the great covers done at that time such as Fortunate Son or Satellite of Love.
Great sound of the Acthung Baby era.
DOMGO73 1 year ago
This version is absolute shit compared to the original. WTF were they thinking? You can't give a dark title like paint it, black a poppy sound.
PAVN 1 year ago
omg this is unbelieveble like u2 can ever come near the quality of the stones, just compare bono to mick then you know enough. u2 should be allowed to cover good music cuz they cant make any either.

I think you guys need to stop thinking about the Stones while you listen to this, because it's a cover, it's not supposed to sound the same. Think about it as an isolated thing and I think you'll like it better.

I did not know, that U2 can play- FANTASTIC!!!

Way to soft.
U2 Rocks a lot, maybe more then the Rolling Stones (in my opinion), but this cover is a thing, that isnt good.......
