Wish I could hear the accent, but I grew up here. Maybe the word figure was a clue. I sometimes say figer too. About the weather, The termperate rainforest on the coast (milder winters and summers) is often grey and foggy which is why the trees can grow so tall. The Willamette Valley has some of the most productive agricultural land in the US. there's great skiing in the Cascade range (drier and sunnier) Then there is the high desert in the east.
We do have an accent. It's weird to think we do. But I travel. And I can't tell you how many times people have not only nailed me on being from Oregon. But from Eugene!

Hell yeah, representin' La Grande, a city in Oregon that nobody cares about, and I really don't blame them, it's boring here. There is a town in the Portland area called Boring lol.
I've lived in Oregon my whole life, so you can probably trust me on this, but the way I pronounce Oregon is with 3 syllables, but the third one is really short and not very noticible... So it's like oh-reh-gun.. Kinda. But you don't really put emphasis on anything but the 'oh' part... But the second thing, people tell me I say England weird, but I don't know if it's just me, I say it like "angland" Like, angle... Is it just me?
I pronounce Oregon with only two syllables, the same way I pronounce organ. This was quite confusing when I was younger and was told that I lived in "organ" but had several "organs" in my own body.
@jubetuber Not quite. The western part of the US doesn't really have any accent at all, and yes, the Vancouver, BC area doesn't have too much of an accent ( however in some parts of town, you'll hear a British-type of accent--maybe people who moved there from eastern Canada ) but eastern Canada such as around Toronto--*VERY* heavy British accent..
Apparently in Oregon (I'm from Salem) we say "melk" and "selk" instead of milk and silk, and we also tend to say "gonna" and "wanna" a lot more than the rest of the country.
I hear ya! Born in Oregon, lived in New Zealand for 7 years, then Canada for 1, and abroad in America for awhile. Have lived in Oregon for the last 7 years or so.

california oregon washington state all have simmilar i guess accents which is mostly they talk faster at times or use the word like alot dude of course.
Oregonians have an American west coast accent, very similar to California, and Washington. The only exception is in the Ghettos (Ebonics), or the beach areas of SoCal.
I don't know why people say Oregon wrong so much. I'm from California so I've only heard it said wrong a few times. The best way i've heard to describe how its pronounced is "its not Oregone, it didn't go anywhere".

Once and for all, folks, let's get this right. It's ORIE-gun, with the accent on the first syllable. 'ORIE' rhymes with Laurie (as in Hugh), and Maury (as in Povich)...or Tory, gory, story, etc.
You are quite right! I just wanted to add that the more north easterly you go in Oregon we tend to drop the e sound in favor of an a sound,. (Or-again.) I don't know why we do it.

@jkoff76 nope, it has only two syllables: OR-GUN. If you add the third syllable it sounds like a non-native Oregonian who is trying reallllly hard :-)
@hoyaJenn. I don't care if the person pronounces Oregon with one continuous monosyllable because someone has taken a chainsaw and cut out all their vocal chords. Really I couldn't give a flying fuck!! Thank you for responding to something I wrote over a year ago. Fuckin' accent!!!
By the word 'accent', most people tend to define the word as a diviation from the norm. However, a person's conception of an accent is a sociological one. So when one says that Oregonians have the least defined accent, it really means that it is most unlike every other 'accent', which from another person's perspective is actually the most radical or all accents. It also assumes that perhaps the accent of the 'deep' south is somehow deviant. Thoughts.
People in the Pacific Northwest arguably have the least pronounced "accent" of any American dialect. However, native Oregonians can detect subtle differences. The country folk, for example, tend to drop the "ing" endings from their words --- comin', goin', doin', etc., while adding a superfluous "r" in words like "warsh" (for wash). This, I suppose, is more about diction that "accent," but it is nevertheless interesting to note that there is a difference between "city" and "country" talk.
I'm from Grants Pass (Southern Oregon). We definitely pronounce "ing" words with the in' sound. But I don't know of many people who through the r into the "ash" sound. It's very interesting how different we speak just by regions.
Many of her sentences either sound like she's asking a question?(lol). Or, she emphasizes the syllable of the last word of every sentence?. I guess that's typical of west coast states.
I'm from Chicago and I really don't hear any difference between our dialects, just sounds natural to me. You are also extremely attractive, for what its worth haha. See ya.
Im from Oregon aswell. ALBANY SPEAKING!!! LOL When a new kid at my school arrives from another state everyone has to correct him/her because they tend to pronounce it Or-e-gone or Or-a-gone (for some wierd reason)
I might have to put a latino/oregon accent post up, though not sure if that's necessary cuz i don't know if mine is any different. and you do sound like an oregonian. or at least like i think an oregonian would sound like. basically saying you sound like my friends.
cool idea. if i could get a video uploaded i'd do one on my california "accent." lol. i actually might be moving to portland next year (my first year of high school) and i can just say oregon is AWESOME
thats funny, i was B&R in chicago but when i went to oregon to visit my mom you guys jumped all over me about pronouncing oregon. i say it like "or-gon"i always thaught orgonians sounded like surfers. nice place tho, in the summer.
The video was made for an international forum (that is why it is addressed to "Fry Fans") where the members were posting links to videos of their different dialects/accents. I joined in by posting mine and gave them a link. The video wasn't really intended to be interesting to anyone outside of that forum. Personally I'm surprised about all the comments.
I have lived in Oregon my whole life. There are several slight variances I have heard from native speakers, but they all say it more or less like I do. There are 3 syllables, the middle one is very lightly pronounced, Or-re-gun. Some say closer to Or-re-gan, I know I probably say something slightly in the middle. What it is not, is 2 syllables, and it is not said like the word organ, and it is not pronounced Or-GONE. The proof is in the state song.
@scittlezs OMG I am so against people saying Or-reh-gone. I get it all the time from other Americans. I'm from Portland and we say Or-reh-GUN!!!! <3 you girl for saying it!
I also have lived my whole life in Oregon, and I tell people Oregon is pronounced similar to "Or-again". When I was back east people were trying to correct my pronunciation. How cute is that?
yay! I'm from Oregon too. Yeah, it is really funny how many people pronounce it incorrectly, I think the problem is that phonetically it reads OR-E-GON but really its more like the word organ.
Wish I could hear the accent, but I grew up here. Maybe the word figure was a clue. I sometimes say figer too. About the weather, The termperate rainforest on the coast (milder winters and summers) is often grey and foggy which is why the trees can grow so tall. I'm from Oregon as well. Regarding the pronunciation, I've seen a bumper sticker that read "Orygun" which made much sense.

I from the midwest and I orgen I leave out the e,I say pop,I say doin instead of doing,
cubbs357 3 years ago
"doin" is not an accent that's just the falsity of your pronunciation.
an accent would be like take apple for instance some people say "epple" or "e-app-ple" but faster. falsity of the pronunciation would be APP. GET IT

fsusemi, please tell me you're not serious. everyone has an accent. there is no default way to speak. some are just heavier than others.

She has a general american accent. . .what is the point of this video

It's pronounced OR-EE-GUN. There are 3 syllables, emphasis on the first one. That's it. Done.

When you say you're saying Oregon very clearly you're actually pronouncing it wrong. Its pronounced Ore-GON. But people from Oregon say it "Ore-GAN"
pojo205 3 years ago

It reads to me like, O'Regan the Irish surname.
