This is a great song, I have always loved it, but this video sucks. It has absolutely nothing to do with the song. It's not un-Hiatt like in it's look and feel, but the song has enough innate visual elements to carry a video. I despise video directors who come up with a concept and a look and them paste it over whatever song they're assigned to make a video for.
I think the same 9 people have gone to every video on youtube and disliked every one of them.
Great tune. Too bad Hiatt is sometimes pidgeonholed as a pure country guy, I never saw him that way, but some won't give his songs a chance because they perceive all "country" as bad...
There is another version of this video, which is just a single take of Hiatt, leaning against the vintage car, playing the song on guitar with his drummer nearby.
I saw John Hiatt in Atlanta @ the Roxy in early/mid-nineties...for his secon encore he came out playing the Ramones.."Twenty, twenty four hours or more, I want to be sedated.." and folks went nuts..great musician, singer, song writer,..under rated...very qualified..never sold out much respected, "Discretion is and always will be the grander part of valor.." good job John keep up great playing, and we will keep listening and buying your recordings..peace...
John is just amazing. I heard about him through word-of-mouth. My friend said he sounded kind of like Elvis Costello. It was cool to find out he did a song with Elvis, and then later worked with Nick Lowe. Three of the most incredible artists, all working together.
First John Hiatt song I ever heard was "Seven Little Indians". Talk about a great story. Hiatt has it all: Great songwriter - some of the best lyrics ever - great musician to boot. This 1st tape of Hiatt tunes also had the great Jeff Healey - better guitarist than 99% of those who could see...
the words of this song are so deep on such a simple, excellent ,masterpiece of a song. that it has helped me through life. anything worth learning , loving , or keeping, is a slow turning.helped me with god when i was coming to terms in my younger days. and now after all these years i have to remind myself " its just a slow turnin" great song
those old people in the video most likely dead by now but they live on forever this way..... i heard Adam Carolla talking about john hiatt... how his music had substance and the sound was timeless ...i now get it... other songs from 20 years ago sound like songs from 20 years ago....not this one..love it
lots of mucisans like John Hiatt (who are truly spokespeople of their times and countries) connect with us. Try Paul Kelly (Australia), John Martyn(Scotland), Richard Thompson(UK), or even Paul Weller, you won't regret it .
Last Monday, John followed the Los Lobos show, at the Pacific National Exhibition, the PNE. That was a great night! John's guitarist, from Nashville, was remarkable. Eric Clapton would have enjoyed the show. The drummer and bass guitarist were marvellous, too. John is unique. He seems like a truly friendly, happy fellow with a great sense of humour and musical talent. I tried signing along but my lungs couldn't hold the note as long as John. Ridin' with the KInggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggg,..
This song always made me smile, this awsome video makes me laugh out loud. The two are perfect together! You rock brother John and the person that directed this video needs an Oscar!
time is short and here's the damn thing about it . . . you're gonna die, gonna die FO SHO . . . you can learn to live with love or without it, but there ain't NO CURE!!!! - - - Love this song
Ever since I heard John Hiatt's song "Alone in the Dark" in the film "True Lies" when Jamie Lee Curtis performs her srtiptease, I've become a huge fan of Hiatt's genius.
You can learn to live with love or without it but there ain't no cure - it's just a slow turning from the inside out! First song of his I heard, almost 15 years ago. Still gets me every time!
i have listen to john hiatt for years i finaly got to see him when i was 16 and iam 18 now i meet him and he was happy that there kids out there who love his music i will always love listen to john hiatt
I dont think ive heard a song with more poignant lyrics I love this more every decade that im around . John Hiatt should be a national treasure- You Yankees should put his face on a dollar bill or something!!!!!
Years later the acoustic riff that opens this song showed up on the Patty Loveless hit "I'm That Kind of Girl." At least her band had the good taste to steal from the very best.
I grew up a mile or so from John but didn't 'know' him til he got noticed thru his songwriting and since have seen him several times, most recently in Indy about 2 years ago...great song writer/ musican and human being!
i've never had the pleasure of seeing john live, but want to. lol i love this tune. 94 in austin used to play it right after i got outta the usaf at bergstom. thanks for posting.
If you have the good fortune of catching John at a small venue like the State Theater in Kalamazoo, MI, he will stay after and shake your hand. Amazingly nice and humble man.
love this song..I saw JH in concert around 1989 ~ with Robert Cray band.....JH blew him off the stage!! Unintentionally id think! He is such a great songwriter
@tiktoride I don't think John sought out Fame like other Musicians! Less Pressure, play when you feel like it! I'm sure John has made a good living doing what he enjoys doing!
I listen to very heavy music, but I have always loved John Hiatt. His lyrics are classic. Excellent song writer. Slow Turning has been a favorite of mine for at least 15 years.
omg i lov hm i no all the lyrics 2 his song. me and my family r big fans of him. even my 1 year old sis and 3 year old sis they r so cute when we put the cd on. my 1 year old dances 2 him in her carseat. and my 3 year old sister dances and sings cuz she knows all the worlds and dances it is hillarious
I LOVE this song. I'd never heard of John Hiatt until he came out with this album back in 1988 (was it?), and this song was played. I immediately knew I had to get the album, and it was one of my favorite at that time in my life. Brings back some good, and some painful, memories. Great song.
Same here. I first heard this song on a local radio station, and immediately traveled a considerable distance(70 miles)to purchase this on vinyl l.p.! (I was still buying vinyl back then!) I thought that it was black singer, that first time I heard it,and I remember being quite surprised upon seeing the face on the album cover was a white man.
This is a very easy song to play. Hiatt shows that less is more and that a good song doesn't need a lot for people to appreciate it. I saw John at a 500 person venue in 1987. He played for 2 1/2 hours. There was a lot of great energy that night. Sonny played slide and the band rocked the house. Good memories.
This was the first song of his I ever heard - he totally blew me away with his lyrics. I think I have 8 of his CD's, and there isn't a cheap lyric in any song.
JerLewis63 : Urban's is just a contemporary countryized, "this will appeal to the masses" version (ie. his "Thing Called Love" vs Bonnie Raitt's). You can tell this vocal, like all his vocals, came from deep within. You need to listen to the cd's "Bring the Family" and "Slow Turning" to get what he's about...also,superb songwriting and performances like these require that you try hard.
John hiatt est un grand artiste americain trop peu connu en france.a decouvrir de toute urgence.the big classe...commencer par "have a little faith" ...vous comprendrez immediatement pourquoi j'ai craqué pour ce grand chanteur...
All John Hiatt music, and this song in particular, have been with me since the early eighties in Austin, TX. This song has a way of popping up on the radio somewhere when I need it. Best songwriter ever.
John Hyatt is worldfamous in the Netherlands. I love this guy and I'm glad he did not end up in The House Without Any Windows. Thanks for everything hope to see you ever again, preferably in the Paradiso, Amsterdam.
This man's music has gotten me through lots of good and bad times. Found him as a young boy climbing through repo'd cars collecting cassettes that were left behind. I've seen him twice live. You will have many moments of realizations while listening to his music. Thanks Mr. Hiatt.
I saw John in Kalamazoo MI. He came out and shook our hands and talked with us afterwards. And he had done the whole acoustic show alone. He was very genteel and gracious. The man's raw soul, energy and charisma is second only to his talent. Fantastic song. My second favorite of his.
I too had the chance to meet him out back of a venue once last summer. He was so warm and genuine; it was as if he knew me already, and he was genuinely interested in my tale...my hope for him is to "not fade away, not fade away...". Do yourself a favor and go see him.
"and I'm yellin' at the kids in the back, 'cause they're bangin' like-a Charlie Watts..." Great line.

keith urbans version is better.....he makes it sound good without trying so hard
JerLewis63 3 years ago
JerLewis63 : Urban's is just a contemporary countryized, "this will appeal to the masses" version (ie. his "Thing Called Love" vs Bonnie Raitt's). You can tell this vocal, like all his vocals, came from deep within. You need to listen to the cd's "Bring the Family" and "Slow Turning" to get what he's about...also,superb songwriting and performances like these require that you try hard.

Thanks Mr. Hiatt.

a great lyrisist indeed, my favourite line is:
' the only bars i frequent these days,
have lettuce and tomatoes' .....
jonnybellie 3 years ago
"yellin' at the kids in the back
cuz they're bangin' like Charlie Watts"
Only Hiatt would write a line like that!

It's hard to believe how few people know John Hiatt. For me there's only Dylan and Cohen above him...

But neither Dylan nor Cohen can match Hiatt's vocal talent.
