  • "and I'm yellin' at the kids in the back, 'cause they're bangin' like-a Charlie Watts..." Great line.

  • this is one of favorite jams from John...rock on brother

  • Singin' what I had to say. Brilliant.

  • Permanent favorite! Love the rhythm to the dancers in the video!

  • Bangin like Charlie Watts classic

  • This is a great song, I have always loved it, but this video sucks. It has absolutely nothing to do with the song. It's not un-Hiatt like in it's look and feel, but the song has enough innate visual elements to carry a video. I despise video directors who come up with a concept and a look and them paste it over whatever song they're assigned to make a video for.

  • Is this guy Mellencamps long lost dadddy?

  • just discovered hiatt. amazing. one of the best.

  • charlie bit my sticky finger

  • Heard the song the other day in a movie called The Rookie with Dennis Quad...Great song , great movie......

    Cheers

  • @Cowiesxr6t

thats the only time i ever heard this song

  • I love John - but do you think that Dave Grohl is his illegitimate son??? Just sayin'....

  • @dadonred LOL! I never noticed the resemblance until I read your comment.

  • Brilliant, just fucking epic.

  • this tune's a stomper.. love the banjo.. love the growly voice.. love the humor..

love john hiatt..! the man's a treasure..

  • I think the same 9 people have gone to every video on youtube and disliked every one of them.

Great tune. Too bad Hiatt is sometimes pidgeonholed as a pure country guy, I never saw him that way, but some won't give his songs a chance because they perceive all "country" as bad...

  • There is another version of this video, which is just a single take of Hiatt, leaning against the vintage car, playing the song on guitar with his drummer nearby.

  • This song. Get's me through (the really rough parts of life that i DO not want to deal with)...the parts that hurt.

  • yeah, kinda like the best song writing.

  • Been listening to this tune for long time. And I honestly think I luv it more now. And I luved it so much then~!

  • If you've never seen John in concert then your bucket list is not complete...

  • Love it

  • I love that line "...Yellin' at the kids cus' they're banging like Charlie Watts."

Watts is The rollingstones drummer for those of you who didn't know.

  • Dude looks like a cross between Tommy Lee Jones and Billy Bob Thornton........

  • I saw John Hiatt in Atlanta @ the Roxy in early/mid-nineties...for his secon encore he came out playing the Ramones.."Twenty, twenty four hours or more, I want to be sedated.." and folks went nuts..great musician, singer, song writer,..under rated...very qualified..never sold out much respected, "Discretion is and always will be the grander part of valor.." good job John keep up great playing, and we will keep listening and buying your recordings..peace...

  • John is just amazing. I heard about him through word-of-mouth. My friend said he sounded kind of like Elvis Costello. It was cool to find out he did a song with Elvis, and then later worked with Nick Lowe. Three of the most incredible artists, all working together.

  • Brother John is a genius songwriter. Vastly underrated. A secret for those who take the time or have the luck to be exposed to his music. Wonderful.

  • There is a reason why people like Mr. Hiatt aren't uber famous. At least I like to think there is. They don't want to be.

  • Some artists hire song writers.. Some artists ARE song writers. Hint, hint.. Nashville.

  • There are no words to describe how happy that album has made me. ROCK ON JOHN!!!

  • This just might be one of the best songs EVER!!!

  • JustAintthatWay,

First John Hiatt song I ever heard was "Seven Little Indians". Talk about a great story. Hiatt has it all: Great songwriter - some of the best lyrics ever - great musician to boot. This 1st tape of Hiatt tunes also had the great Jeff Healey - better guitarist than 99% of those who could see...

  • One of the best songs ever written, period.

  • @ThePopcorn2323 i agree 'cept it aint even the best song on the disc

'tennessee plates' and 'paper thin' knock my socks off

the former has the best storytellin' lyrics ever

and the latter the best ...the best i dont even know what just

every time i hear that opening lick it's on and im in

  • One of, if not the best vocalists of my life-time.

  • the words of this song are so deep on such a simple, excellent ,masterpiece of a song. that it has helped me through life. anything worth learning , loving , or keeping, is a slow turning.helped me with god when i was coming to terms in my younger days. and now after all these years i have to remind myself " its just a slow turnin" great song

  • those old people in the video most likely dead by now but they live on forever this way..... i heard Adam Carolla talking about john hiatt... how his music had substance and the sound was timeless ...i now get it... other songs from 20 years ago sound like songs from 20 years ago....not this one..love it

  • nice song how did i miss this all of these years???

  • lots of mucisans like John Hiatt (who are truly spokespeople of their times and countries) connect with us. Try Paul Kelly (Australia), John Martyn(Scotland), Richard Thompson(UK), or even Paul Weller, you won't regret it .

  • Nice Video!

  • John Hiatt is the man!!

  • Last Monday, John followed the Los Lobos show, at the Pacific National Exhibition, the PNE. That was a great night! John's guitarist, from Nashville, was remarkable. Eric Clapton would have enjoyed the show. The drummer and bass guitarist were marvellous, too. John is unique. He seems like a truly friendly, happy fellow with a great sense of humour and musical talent. I tried signing along but my lungs couldn't hold the note as long as John. Ridin' with the KInggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggg,..

  • THE BEST song writer in America!

  • This "master of Disaster" will be playing in Rutland Vermont,SOON! Ahma gonna be there!

  • He's a wordsmith for sure, plus he puts out on stage totally. The best of both sides.

  • This song always made me smile, this awsome video makes me laugh out loud. The two are perfect together! You rock brother John and the person that directed this video needs an Oscar!

  • I think Hiatt saved my life.

  • That is what matters

  • Nobody can turn a phrase like John and his musical abilites are amazing.

    I love him.

  • time is short and here's the damn thing about it . . . you're gonna die, gonna die FO SHO . . . you can learn to live with love or without it, but there ain't NO CURE!!!! - - - Love this song

  • Ever since I heard John Hiatt's song "Alone in the Dark" in the film "True Lies" when Jamie Lee Curtis performs her srtiptease, I've become a huge fan of Hiatt's genius.

  • never did get what I wanted but now I get what I need.....love this

  • Got to see John several times. Under rated and under represented here on You Tube. You rock John. Love ya!!!! =)

  • Killer song. Love it.

  • Love the "dancing' by the dude with the white cowboy hat!

  • SONGWRITIN' HOMBRE, Y O U R O C K !!!

  • Yeah,he's so underrated that everyone who can afford to cover his songs...

  • yea , he is really underated , great

  • You can learn to live with love or without it but there ain't no cure - it's just a slow turning from the inside out! First song of his I heard, almost 15 years ago. Still gets me every time!

  • such a great song. love john hiatt,

  • America's most underrated singer-songwriter. I dare you to find a bad John Hiatt song.

  • "I always thought that our house was haunted because nobody said boo to me........"

"The kids are in the back banging like Charlie Watts. "

Fecking brilliant stuff. Kosher' you are so right about John being criminally underrated.

  • is this the original video for this song?

  • John Hiatt is in my opinion an American icon and one of the greatest singer songwriters to have blessed the musical world.

  • One of the best albums I've ever heard.

  • man o' man what a sweet voice

  • Who is the older guy in the white suit? Looks like he could be a relative.

  • MAn I just got the re4mastered version of this album (I always hated how low the levels were on the original) and I am Hiatt Heaven!

  • Love this song, love John - and his obvious love for the Stones!

  • @queenjaneapprox -and Buddy Holly too "not fade away"...

  • Just got tickets to see The Great Master in March at The Birchmere in Alexandria, VA!! Can't wait!

  • I do believe this man has just aquired a new fan.

  • I dont think ive heard a song with more poignant lyrics I love this more every decade that im around . John Hiatt should be a national treasure- You Yankees should put his face on a dollar bill or something!!!!!

  • Years later the acoustic riff that opens this song showed up on the Patty Loveless hit "I'm That Kind of Girl." At least her band had the good taste to steal from the very best.

  • Anudda great song from the master!

    Best songwriter America has produced!!

and a great bloke whom I've met!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Yur right!

  • John Hiatt is criminally underated. An assload of more well known country / rockabilly / rock "stars" wish they had his genuineness.

  • Ain't that the truth? This was a killer album.

  • LOL, try to get a ticket to one of his shows in the Denver area. GOOD LUCK! He has always sold out here when I caught him!

  • @kosherspeare

Amen! John has more talent in his pinky than most artists today.

  • @MrKevinTN Couldn't agree with you more, I can't stand a lot of these "talented artists" today. Ugh what's going on??! xD

  • @kosherspeare , I HEAR YOU

  • @kosherspeare I couldn't have said it better myself!

  • fuck good times, my twin and i...... lov dis song

  • I grew up a mile or so from John but didn't 'know' him til he got noticed thru his songwriting and since have seen him several times, most recently in Indy about 2 years ago...great song writer/ musican and human being!

  • OMG, i love this!!!!!!!!!

  • This is John Mellencamp if he had any idea how to write a song

  • john cougar fan's bitching about getting songwriting credit. viva indiana.

  • i've never had the pleasure of seeing john live, but want to. lol i love this tune. 94 in austin used to play it right after i got outta the usaf at bergstom. thanks for posting.

  • If you have the good fortune of catching John at a small venue like the State Theater in Kalamazoo, MI, he will stay after and shake your hand. Amazingly nice and humble man.

  • This is the first song I heard from JH it crossed over to some rock stations in 1989 or so. What a singer !

  • Something about this song puts me in one hell of a good mood.

  • @withinspace amen to that.. couldn't've said it better myself.. :)

  • Any chance you would have the recorded (not live) version of 'Thank God the Tiki Bar is Open'?

  • Check out Little Village another Hiatt band Hiatt, Lowe, Cooder and Keltner. A Great band

  • Saw them in Edinburgh, they are sadly missed. Going to see Cooder, Lowe and Flaco next month in Gateshead, can't wait.

  • I love this dude!

I remember when I was just in pre-school my dad would play his albums and I would sing along.

I'm a teenager now and I still love listening to him!

  • I LOVE this song! Since I was 24 (i think it came out in 1986) THANK GOD for You Tube

  • Not fade away, not fade away....Bangin on the drums like Charlie Watts

  • "Yellin' at the kids in the back cause they're bangin' like Charlie Watts"

Man somewhere I grew up and get this now...John is a genius.

  • Uncanny man.. The line stands out in my childhood too. And yes, i grew up too and get it now.

  • love this song..I saw JH in concert around 1989 ~ with Robert Cray band.....JH blew him off the stage!! Unintentionally id think! He is such a great songwriter

  • I have seen Brother John many a time. What a great guy. He should be much more popular. A true AMERICAN, and a wonderful song-writer.

  • Hell yes!!

  • @tiktoride I don't think John sought out Fame like other Musicians! Less Pressure, play when you feel like it! I'm sure John has made a good living doing what he enjoys doing!

  • This song got me into John Hiatt. I have been a fan since..

  • I listen to very heavy music, but I have always loved John Hiatt. His lyrics are classic. Excellent song writer. Slow Turning has been a favorite of mine for at least 15 years.

  • omg i lov hm i no all the lyrics 2 his song. me and my family r big fans of him. even my 1 year old sis and 3 year old sis they r so cute when we put the cd on. my 1 year old dances 2 him in her carseat. and my 3 year old sister dances and sings cuz she knows all the worlds and dances it is hillarious

  • Nobody can turn a phrase like JohnHiatt can, and nobody will ever mistake his voice for anyone else. I love him.

  • Great song.

  • Is that ex-Eagles man Bernie Leadon on banjo @ 1:28?

  • and no one has baby blue, everybody want love or pitfall

  • my faves are master of disaster, i think it called everybody want love, baby blue, and permanent hurt. also pitfall i think it is

  • bangin like charlie watts

  • I LOVE this song. I'd never heard of John Hiatt until he came out with this album back in 1988 (was it?), and this song was played. I immediately knew I had to get the album, and it was one of my favorite at that time in my life. Brings back some good, and some painful, memories. Great song.

  • Same here. I first heard this song on a local radio station, and immediately traveled a considerable distance(70 miles)to purchase this on vinyl l.p.! (I was still buying vinyl back then!) I thought that it was black singer, that first time I heard it,and I remember being quite surprised upon seeing the face on the album cover was a white man.

  • I'd love to hear John sing "One for the One" again on Youtube. For some reason it was taken down.

  • This is a very easy song to play. Hiatt shows that less is more and that a good song doesn't need a lot for people to appreciate it. I saw John at a 500 person venue in 1987. He played for 2 1/2 hours. There was a lot of great energy that night. Sonny played slide and the band rocked the house. Good memories.

  • This is the song that got me hooked on John Hiatt. One of many great songs from 'Ol Hojn.

  • Comment removed

  • Is there anyone better???? I think not!

  • My husband was just watching, "The Rookie" in the other room and I heard this song playing. Great song!!

  • Now I'm in my car OohI got the radio down I'm yelling at the kids in back 'cause they're banging like Charlie Watts!

  • John Hiatt is one of the most underated musicians ever. So many people have covered his songs.

  • This IS one of the best songs ever written!

  • John Hiatt rocks! I wish someone would put up "You Must Go".. my favorite song of his.

  • I've always loved this song and John Hiatt in general, and it completely fits my life right now -- thank you for posting this great video!

  • i feel the same.good stuff.

  • This fucker is the reason I still listen to music! He's the BEST!

    taxiboysdrummer

  • i call this my theme song.

  • Hey HiattHouse can you post a Trudy and Dave video? I love that song and can't find it anywhere. DO IT please?

  • Wow! Senor Hiatt is my hero! Banging on an ol' guitar makes this racket down here!

  • 1 of the 2 best songs ever.

cant think of the other 1 right now.

  • hail yeah

  • Love John Hiatt. Bring the family and Slow turning are two of my favourites album of all times.

  • This song turned me on to John Hiatt. Be lovin it ever since!!!

  • paisleyrules: clueless comment. Hiatt's voice sounds like he's BEEN SOMEWHERE...

  • EXACTLY!

  • This was the first song of his I ever heard - he totally blew me away with his lyrics. I think I have 8 of his CD's, and there isn't a cheap lyric in any song.

  • very gracious words to describe this mans song writing by some of you. First time i've heard of him and I like what i hear.

  • John Hiatt is THE MAN! Don't forget that!

  • THE BEST JOHN HIATT!

    The Best Songwriter!

    Forget those loser country versions...

    His are always better.

    taxiboysdrummer

  • JerLewis63 : Urban's is just a contemporary countryized, "this will appeal to the masses" version (ie. his "Thing Called Love" vs Bonnie Raitt's). You can tell this vocal, like all his vocals, came from deep within. You need to listen to the cd's "Bring the Family" and "Slow Turning" to get what he's about...also,superb songwriting and performances like these require that you try hard.

  • John hiatt est un grand artiste americain trop peu connu en france.a decouvrir de toute urgence.the big classe...commencer par "have a little faith" ...vous comprendrez immediatement pourquoi j'ai craqué pour ce grand chanteur...

  • All John Hiatt music, and this song in particular, have been with me since the early eighties in Austin, TX. This song has a way of popping up on the radio somewhere when I need it. Best songwriter ever.

  • John Hiatt is the shit. Period.

  • John Hyatt is worldfamous in the Netherlands. I love this guy and I'm glad he did not end up in The House Without Any Windows. Thanks for everything hope to see you ever again, preferably in the Paradiso, Amsterdam.

  • This man's music has gotten me through lots of good and bad times. Found him as a young boy climbing through repo'd cars collecting cassettes that were left behind. I've seen him twice live. You will have many moments of realizations while listening to his music. Thanks Mr. Hiatt.

  • I'm in Seattle and just biding my time till I'm back in Alabama, John.

  • right on, what part of Alabama.

  • a great lyrisist indeed, my favourite line is:

' the only bars i frequent these days,

    have lettuce and tomatoes' .....

  • "yellin' at the kids in the back

cuz they're bangin' like Charlie Watts"

Only Hiatt would write a line like that!

  • HIATT IS DA MAN!! Unreal singer/songwriter!! Thanks, Jon

  • love this song......thanks for posting ........

  • any vid of it feels like rain . thats the shit hiatts best

  • Was this a great record or what?????

  • this is what is all about!!!!

  • No its not

  • Greetings from finland! Thank you for this video! Love Hiatt´s music and i wish i could play guitar like him.

  • John Hiatt thankyou for reinspiring me to want to sing and play again.

  • It's hard to believe how few people know John Hiatt. For me there's only Dylan and Cohen above him...

  • But neither Dylan nor Cohen can match Hiatt's vocal talent.

  • I saw John in Kalamazoo MI. He came out and shook our hands and talked with us afterwards. And he had done the whole acoustic show alone. He was very genteel and gracious. The man's raw soul, energy and charisma is second only to his talent. Fantastic song. My second favorite of his.

  • I too had the chance to meet him out back of a venue once last summer. He was so warm and genuine; it was as if he knew me already, and he was genuinely interested in my tale...my hope for him is to "not fade away, not fade away...". Do yourself a favor and go see him.

  • It's been a slow turnin, a slow journey, a slow learning, for all of us,huh? LOVE this guy.

  • Love this song in 1988, and more now!!!
